I've been feeling very anxious and a bit depressed for the past few weeks. the depressions seems to have lifted and now i feel really really anxious. i have constant butterflies in my stomach and have been taking Kalms and Nytol for days now but i don't really think it's had much effect.

has anyone else experienced this? I am going to see a therapist next week for some CBT and i am hoping that will help.

In the meantime i want this feeling to go away as i am scared i am doing some damage to my heart. I have nothing to feel stressed about at the moment so not sure what could be causing it.

Someone help!

The best way to deal with anxiety is to accept that it's there. The more you push it away, the worse it gets.

Can you find out some stuff about mindfulness? That has helped me a lot.

I have been there. When I was at my worst with anxiety my rational brain was constantly arguing with my anxiety brain over wether getting off the sofa in the morning to brush my teeth and similar activities would cause an instant, fatal heart attack. It sucks.

CBT was brilliant and I am for all pratical purposes anxiety free (unless there is something to be anxious about).

In the mean time these things helped me:

Singing - Helps to distract you and helps control your breathing which also helps with some of the physical sensations that go with anxiety.
Get Moving - Even simple bends and stretches used to help me.
Put on a DVD of a comedian you like - You might not go straight to belly laughs but it steadily lifts my mood.
Talk (or write) about it - I used to find posting about it helped when I didn't feel like talking to real life folks.

I will probably think of more in a minute but those were the main ones.

Good luck with the CBT.

Anxiety does not do any damage to your heart. Old wives tales. Sometimes when you have a panic attack your heart may feel like it races or flutters for a bit, but it's a big strong muscle and that's nothing it can't handle. Much less stressful for the heart than say breaking into a run to catch the bus.

Go exercise that heart a bit with a good walk or run. It will help you deal with the anxiety. As will the CBT. As will Mindfulness.

What is mindfulness, please?

yellowraincoat · 16/06/2012 17:29

Plenty of info here , it's mostly about being aware of your circumstances and emotions.

Thank you all for the info. Will look at mindfulness. I'm looking forward to cbt. I've done it before and it worked. Really hoping it will this time.

I think I am putting too much pressure on myself to just snap out of it. Accepting it is hard but will try.

It's got do bad that my muscles ache like I have done exercise. I did go for a long jog the other night as I felt I had to get rid of this adrenaline. I feel like I am spot that just waiting to be squeezed. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

I might chance a glass of wine tonight.

Stop all caffeine and alcohol. Your sure to see an effect in a few days.

madmouse · 16/06/2012 18:57

cupcake you always present that as a be all and end all - it's not always true. For starters it depends on how much someone drinks and how susceptible they are to alcohol and caffeine. In my case, I don't drink alcohol and the only caffeine I get is from one cup of tea and some chocolate. Not much will happen if I stop.

OP what you describe is classic anxiety and muscle pain can come from clenching and tensing and also tossing and turning in bed.

marilynmonroe · 16/06/2012 19:13

I actually don't have a lot of caffeine usually. I only have a cup in the morning and decaf the rest of the time. I've given it up since feeling like this but think a small glass of wine might be a nice distraction and actually relax me a bit.

I'm really hoping it will go away.

Need your wisdom and reassurance!
