My dh has been diagnosed with bpd after almost twenty years of asking for help and still has not recieved the psychotherapy he needs , ime people suffering with these illnesses are not getting the help they need due to poor funding stigmas and the fact it is an invisible illness I really want to help make a difference and raise funding and awareness so people can get the help they need and live happy lives .
Can I set up a charity of my own or are there any good ones I can support? I am making a list of things I can do to raise money , any suggestions would be appreciated very much.

I would recommend bipolar UK link i think they would be very grateful of your fundraising. I am sorry to hear your husband went so long without diagnosis, my diagnosis took 4 years to come through and in that time my life was wrecked. now I am on medication I am a lot better, its the only 'therapy' offered to me on the NHS,but it is cheap and effective, i have never been offered psychotherapy. I hope your husband gets the treatment he needs, it can take a while to get the right medication at the right dose.

I work for Rethink Mental Illness www.rethink.org so am biased, but we are very active around the more serious end of mental health issues including bipolar and bpd - we also have a large campaign to end mental health stigma, Time to Change www.time-to-change.org.uk - run in conjunction with Mind.

MrsWhiskerson, I agree with you. I have bipolar disorder and during a spell in a psychiatric ward, the consultant psychiatrist there wrote a recommendation that I needed psychotherapy and that in her opinion, if I had it the chances of further admissions would be reduced. When I came out of hospital my regular psychiatrist refused to refer me for psychotherapy.

I ended up finding a private psychotherapist which I paid for myself - I saw her once a week for about 18 months and now I see her every 5 weeks. I am so much better, am off my medication and have had no episodes for 3 years.
