How much do you tell your work about your MH issues?

I have a 3 month review for my new job next week. I'm not expecting to have any problems, but I am wondering whether I should mention my MH issues? (depression and ADHD)

I'm still working on sorting them out, but well on the way to being stable on medication. Would my line manager have to divulge that information to more senior people? I trust my line manager that he wouldn't use the information to prejudice me.

I'm only thinking of mentioning it because
a) I have to go for reasonably regular medical appointments
b) I often have to take medication at work
c) I can have some pretty rough days - not too often, and I'm hoping they'll decrease over time as I get better.
d) At some point soon (in the next 6 months) I will have to take a drugs test and will have to reveal anyway the medication I'm on.

What do you reckon?

Personally I've always been open about my struggles (PTSD and anxiety) and have found that worked really well, but then I had great employers. (I'm fine now but my difficulties lasted 3 years and therfore spanned last and current employer).

I have told HR but not my line manager (at her advice Hmm Confused) about my depression.

Ask your line manager about the company's confidentiality rules, and what he must tell his bosses, what he must not tell them, and what he may tell them. Then, if you're feeling comfortable and the rules are such that he can keep it under his hat, if you want to disclose you'll know whether it's an issue.

I'm pretty sure the drug testing will allow you privacy wrt medication, it's just if anything you haven't disclosed on the form to the pee-in-a-cup people shows up that your boss will be told. But this is probably something to ask when the testing happens.

Good luck!

Nothing - ever.

They would not say anything and would be outwardly sympathetic but it would change the way they saw me and undermine their confidence in me. I work in a competitive, stressful professional environment and they would not believe I could do it anymore if I told them. I am pretty sure that they would generally be of the view that I should "pull myself together".

Depends on what you do though and what your colleagues are like. You may be in a more supportive environment.

Went private so I could have appointments late at night and took pills in loos. You can keep it a secret if you feel you have to.
