Had our car broken into last night and our new stereo stolen out of it, smashed the passenger side window and made a right mess - WE get a crime number and we have to pay out insurance excess' of £100!!! the police say they can do NOTHING, we are always strapped financially anyway - we cant afford £100!! it makes me sooo mad! the scurge of society that did this will profit form our stereo, and never have any come back

Sorry to hear about that Helenemjay. Same thing happened to us. Were there any witnesses who could give the police something to go on? My neighbour heard a loud sound and then 2 students in uniform running away. But even if we went to the police with that, the police probably could not go very far. Sadly, the crime number is just for making an insurance claim. It is not for you to get justice .

Helenemjay · 13/02/2006 16:05

It makes you sick doesnt it! there is absolutley NO justice for these things at all, it was only a year ago we were left stranded in a woods with our 2 small kids as while we took them for a walk, a bunch of teens stole our car and drove off right in front of us! the police never found our car - WE did a week later on the side of a busy road for sale and the police STILL never knew anything about it! - that cost us a bloody fortune too! all our kids car seats and toys were taken with it - sorry to sound like a nag - i needed to vent it off somewhere

So sorry to hear of your experience. I have had two experiences of items having been stolen from me and I am afraid I see red when this happens - we all work so hard for what we have got and then you get a bum who comes along who thinks they can just take it for nothing.

When my son was 16, his father bought him a 'designer jacket' for his birthday (my sons don't normally wear designer stuff by the way!); one particular evening he accompanied his grandpa to a venue & decided to pop outside for a breath of fresh air, sat at the bustop outside, was approached by a youth with a knife who then proceeded to march him up the road (for 10 mins) to a group of other youths and stole his jacket & anything else he had in his pockets - he didn't have a mobile at this time. Well I was so insenced that that night, I took him in the car to scour the streets (a 3 mile radius to where it happened) did not find this evil reprobate. Reported to police obviously as soon as it happened, they came straight away. The following night, I scoured the street and low and behold, I spotted my sons jacket on the back of this evil youth whom I then tailed and dialled 999, explained the situation and they came pronto, arrested this kid, I really felt relieved.

We got the jacket back after it had gone to court.

Sorry, but I have no faith in the police what so ever. We have had to involve the police in matters 3 times, my only dealings with them and each time it didnt benefit us at all.

1st time - Somebody smashed into our parked car at 1 in the morning. It was a hit and run and they never found the person, even left us to sweep glass off the road at 2 in the morning, we ended out of pocket.

2nd time - Somebody stole panels off my car (as crazy as that my sound) on our driveway. Police done nothing, got a crime no thats all. Basically think as we could claim on our insurance they werent interested,

3rd time - Somebody drove into the side of house, thankfully we werent in at the time. Police done nothing, didnt even ban her from driving - they drove into a house fgs, not exactly a moving object! £1000's of damage and out of pocket slighlty.

So that was the 3 times I called the police, not a good message to would be criminals out there is it.

Oh, but they are quick enough to do me for speeding. 80mph on a motorway!

really feel for you helenemjay...

we had a spate of car vandalism during which our rear windscreen was smashed twice in 10 days.
police wouldn't do anything.
and we had to pay excess twice. rteally really sucks

If it helps (I don't think it will) three years ago my house was broken into, various large items were stolen and then the place was doused with petrol and set on fire. I lost everything.

What did the police do: nothing.

I swear to god, absolutely nothing. I'm sure there are more serious crimes, but I was left homeless and with nothing at all, AND the arsonists attempted to blow up my flat.

ShaysMummy · 24/02/2006 21:54

we used to live in a house that had a post office attatched to the side which we ran as a family business.
one night, the house part was broken into, not the post office, so my dad rang the police and they turnt up an hour later, dissapointed it was just our haouse burgled.
the officer exclaimed:
'we only came so soon as we thought the post office had been robbed'
charming.

I might add thsi is another country but same type of corrupt system.

Ex and I had moved into a friends house, this friend was computer whizz as was ex, and between them had some huge pointless network of like 12 computers. Plus two huge sound systems, electric instruments etc. Tons of stuff.

One evening we are out, house is burgled. There's blood everywhere as burglar cut hand on window breaking in. Police come round, and go question neighbours. One doesn't answer door but LIGHTS ARE ON. The next day I happened to see this neighbour with a BANDAGE on his hand, covered in red blood with a van moving stuff.

Tell ex who phones police. They come round and listen, and go see neighbour. Come back and say 'his girlfriend is his alibi, he was at hers all night. Can't see anything untoward in house' from vantage point in kitchen ffs!!!!

Stupid prats.

tribpot · 24/02/2006 22:03

I makes you wonder not how 50 million quid was nicked this week, more how that doesn't happen every goddamn week.

tillykins · 24/02/2006 22:04

What?
Why can't they do anything>
Haven't they even tried for fingerprints?

RedRidingHood · 24/02/2006 22:07

i think the reality is that there's just not enough police, they run from job to job and lose sight of the feelings of the people they see however much they think they are still in touch

also the old fashioned ways worked but don't show up in the statistics

for instance who knows how many break ins etc Dixon of Dock Green stopped by walking around on his beat - you just can't tell but it certainly did something!

charliecat · 24/02/2006 22:20

I am reading a book about criminal profiling, one of the first sentences in it is society gets the criminals it deserves and goes on to explain...I will write more when im less pissed if anyones interested!

GDG · 24/02/2006 22:34

It's nothing to do with the police how much you pay out for damage done, or the excess you have on your insurance!! It's not their job to pay for it!

It is also not up to the police what sentence someone receives.
