DBT but don't have BPD?

DBT but don't have BPD?

I have an on-going thread about being in-patient because of my self harm.

I have been assessed and accepted into the local non-psychosis recovery team (basically the CMHT). They feel I need long term psychotherapy based around DBT (just the 1:1 side of it, not the group work side of it) but I don't have BPD - this has been confirmed by the nurses and doctors working with me.

I have researched DBT and there is literally nothing out there about having it if you are not BPD. I certainly do have issues with my emotions, I am pretty disconnected and I did grow up in an invalidating environment so I can see how DBT might be appropriate. But I feel a bit worried about it, why is there nothing about DBT for people who are not BPD?

Any experiences or thoughts would be welcome. Thanks.

Strangely FDG I was just wondering about you. I have been on the thread a lot today cus have been feeling very crap for last 2 days and my DP away for weekend which has made things worse. I feel I should know what DBT is but am not thinking very clearly - is BPD borderline personality disorder or bi-polar disorder. What is DBT?

I remember your back story very well and it sounds like you have had/are having a horrendous time. How are things now?

Sorry!

DBT = Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
BPD = Borderline Personality Disorder

I am about to update my thread NanaNina (just so I have one place where things are :)). I am ok.

Have never heard of dialetical behaviour therapy - what does that entail? Glad you are ok anyway

Um tbh I am not that sure, I looked it up on the MIND website, it is about regulating emotions I think?

I hope you are starting to feel a bit better now.

I looked it up too and it does seem to be very closely related to BDP. It does mention self harm as one of the issues related to BDP if I have read it right. I wouldn't worry too much about diagnoses. The important thing is that you get the help you need. Is it available on the NHS?

No still feel totally crap - but thanks for asking.
