depression i think (not that i'm an expert) but the alcohol may be to help blot out the depression. Samaritans?

starlover · 09/02/2006 21:41

have you spoken to her about it? tbh with you there isn't much you can do unless she admits she has a problem and needs help.
I would think that the first port of call would be her GP who could refer her to a psychiatrist/CPN/counsellor

starlover · 09/02/2006 21:43

alcohol is a depressant though, so will be making it worse

might be easier to speak on phone first though - maybe less personal ?? Mind u starlover you've got a point about GP - maybe one of the other GP's in the practice?

starlover · 09/02/2006 21:47

well, unless you go private she would need to see a GP for a referral i think.
is there another doctor that she could see? would she be ok if you went with her? it's sometimes easier when you have someone with you to back up what you say (depressed people often feel like there isn't really anything wrong with them, or that people won't believe them)

Latz · 09/02/2006 21:49

try here

starlover · 09/02/2006 21:50

you may be able to ring her surgery and speak to a doctor and see what they say? they may be able to make her an appt with the CPN without seeing a doctor, but i am sure that for a psychiatrist appt she would need a referral

you might find it useful to speak to alcoholics anonymous. they also have a branch (al anon) that gives support to family members of alcoholics.

if you do decide to go private bear in mind that it could cost a LOT as she may need services for a long time, and psychiatrists often want to see you once a week.
Also, i would try and get a personal recommendation

i don't know.. i only have experience of nhs.

main downside of nhs is that it can take a while for an initial appt... i had to wait 4 months!

that aside i don't think that the level of care is any difference. but if you can pay then you can get what you want when you want
