Last week I had a pretty good few days. Was due to see GP for new prescription but stupidly thought I'd be ok. Maybe try and get on without it.
First couple of days were fine. Sun was out. Kept myself busy, saw friends etc and genuinely if not a little bit naively thought that was it. I was cured. I would be fine. Didn't need the meds, could get along perfectly fine without them.
stupid stupid stupid
I feel ill, really really low, had some kind of ridiculous moment with my sleeping tablets. Feel a little out of it, shaky, headache etc.
Is it like some kind of withdrawal or is that too soon?
I've not taken one since Tuesday.
I'm not sure what to do :(

Ring Out of Hours and discuss it. That's what I would do.

garlicbutter · 31/03/2012 15:06

Get back on them sharpish. When I run out I go rapidly downhill over the following week - unless I get a prescription as soon as I realise, it gets to the point where I don't care any more. By the time I get round to it, I have to go through another 3 weeks of readjustment :(

Try your doctor's out-of-hours line.

Spend as much of the weekend as possible doing cosy things, like wrapping yourself up on the sofa to watch films, having long showers and stuff.

madmouse · 31/03/2012 15:58

Yes ring out of hours, alternatively if you have a regular chemist they may be willing to give you a few to tidy you over until Monday - the chemist has that discretion but you may need to answer some questions.

I've just visited a friend to distract myself and come back to find exP's parents have taken LO out for a walk and I need her back here now. I don't like that they've taken her. I'm upstairs crying and shaking. I feel like I need to go out and find them.
that's not normal

I'm going to ring out of hours.
Thanks guys Smile

:) good!

Try not to be down on yourself for getting distraught. Remember it's the meds, not you, and give yourself a break. x

strawberry17 · 31/03/2012 17:18

It's really never a good idea to cold turkey off SSRI's, very few people can do it and get away with it,the withdrawals can be harsh, if you want to come off them you need to do it really slowly and preferebly taper off a liquid SSRI, been there and done it myself Sad, hope you manage to get some meds through out of hours.

pipsy76 · 31/03/2012 17:19

Another option is pharmacists may legally supply you with an emergency supply if you can not get to the doctor, even without a prescription if you can tell them your usual dose.

HugADalek · 31/03/2012 17:23

Call OOH or crisis care please, coming off like that will cause discontinuation symptoms and can be very difficult. In some cases it can cause permanent problems. I get symptoms hours after a missed dose, and not to frighten you, but had a breakdown after four days (fucking awful paroxetine withdrawal), and it's taken the best part of three months to get back to a relatively even keel.

Wish doctors would be more informative on the risks of sudden discontinuation.

strawberry17 · 31/03/2012 20:50

Doctors are not more informative on the risks of sudden discontinuation and withdrawal problems because they genuinely don't know, they are not given the correct information from pharmaceutical companies or the MHRA, I know this for a fact. My doctor genuinely didn't know.

HugADalek · 31/03/2012 21:37

Took me a week of three daily 5mg diazepam tablets after the little four day holiday from seroxat (missed collecting the tablets on the Friday) whilst it got back into my system to stop me going off on one. Absolutely horrendous, emotionally all over the place, with vertigo and brain shocks that made me feel like I was going to fall over every time I moved too fast or turned my head.

Okay so the stuff worked really well for a year, but I was at the point where I was also getting these sorts of symptoms between doses and if I missed times to take medication. Should come with a proper warning of how bad discontinuation is.

strawberry17 · 01/04/2012 09:34

Seroxat is particularly brutal with withdrawals because it washes out of the body/metabolises faster than the other SSRI's, having said that I had problems with all of them in that way but Prozac is the easiest to wean/taper off because it washes out/metabolizes a lot slower. Many people are resigned to being on Seroxat forever because of this.

HugADalek · 01/04/2012 09:50

I'm free of that stuff and will never let it pass my lips again.

The doctors took me off it fast though, I ended up having a breakdown because of the discontinuation symptoms, after a year of taking it they brought me down from 50mg to nothing in eight days, whilst starting the venlafaxine at half dose to combat the withdrawal.

Think I may be stuck with the brain shocks for life, because I still get them occasionally now when I feel very stressed. Thankfully nothing like it was when I was on the seroxat though.

BellaBoo85 · 01/04/2012 09:52

Ended up not ringing out of hours. Had some friends turn up unexpectedly.
Today I feel like I've got the worst hangover in the world, being sick, shaky, headache, stomach ache and feel like I've had no sleep at all.
Don't know whether to call someone or ride it out til tomorrow.

HugADalek · 01/04/2012 10:28

I would say to call. x

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2012 10:48

Please call. You could be feeling better by this evening. x

Hollyfoot · 01/04/2012 11:00

Find an open pharmacy - they may be able to help you with an emergency supply of medication without a prescription as pipsy said. They have done this for my DH before when he ran out of regular medication.

I had a terrible time coming off Seroxat. My friend is a community psychiatric nurse and she told me it's equivalent to coming off heroin.

BellaBoo85 · 01/04/2012 19:21

I rang out of hours and got some. Enough to last me a week so gotta make an appointment with GP tomorrow.
Thanks everyone.
Can't believe I thought I'd be ok without them cos I had a few good days Hmm
And can't believe how bad it made me feel not to take them.
Lesson learned!
