Reducing citalopram dose - is this "normal"?

Am on 30mg citalopram and 10mg amitriptyline per day, taken in the eve. Went back to the doc a cople of weeks back, as sleep probs I had been getting on the citalopram before starting the amitriptyline seemed to be creeping back. As I had otherwise been doing well (been on ad's since last Aug with mixed success until does was correct) gp suggested taking 20mg citalopram Tues, Thurs, Sat, Sun, and the full dose the other days (also continuing the amitriptyline).

In the last week to 10 days though, my mood doesn't seem to have been so stable...like having bad PMT but AF not due yet, Poor dh and ds are baring the brunt of my moods and tongue and I hate it :( Just wanted to know if anyone has similar, with what seems to be quite a small reduction in dose please? Not sure if this will pass or if I need to do something about it?

Headed for sleep now, but any thoughts very welcome, and will check in tomorrow.

Try buying a pill cutter for 2 quid from the pharmacist and taking half a tablet every day rather than a tablet every other day. Can just make the difference. But it's normal to feel not so great when reducing. DH dropped from 10mg to 5mg and had really bad headaches for weeks.

Some SSRIs and TCAs are available in lower doses, liquid form or are cross tolerant enabling you to easily switch to another similar drug type that might be better for tapering off with. Do see you doctor for possible options if that isn't problematic. Either way, avoid flying solo, if possible, on any med decisions.

Sorry for being sloooow and thanks .madmouse and WithanAnotE.

Currently on the hunt for pill cutters - pharmacy DH tried was all out of them, going to do battle with some others (live in the Channel Islands and we are not always the best stocked lol). Such a simple idea, need a lightbulb moment smiley!

And thanks for reminding me that I might be able to get citalopram in liquid form for the lower dose :) TBH the "alternate days" dosing didn't seem terribly logical to me...

I will be careful to try to stick to the docs advice re reducing the dose...have been on just the citalopram about 8 years ago and HATED the withdrawal when I stopped (and that was doing it under drs advice). Was prob THE main reason that I resisted going back on them for so long. Oh and madmouse, thanks for the reassurance that feeling not so great is quite "normal", I feel that there is light at the end of the tunnel :)
