Can anyone tell me if to suddenly stop taking Mirtazapine would make a big effect. DP has been taking 30mg for the past 6 months and has suddenly decided he no longer needs it. To be honest he seems to acting a bit strangely, does anyone have any experience with this please?

Yes that is a problem. It should take him at least 4-6 weeks to come off if not more. He's likely to feel pretty rough if he goes cold turkey. CT is never advisable with ADs.

Thanks Mouse, I have been doing a little reading but wanted to hear from people who have direct experience of this. He has been agressive, argumentative, increased alchohol intake ( probably to calm his nerves) not sleeping.

He's probably drinking to dull the effects of the withdrawal. Aggression is not acceptable, don't tolerate it. How long ago has he stopped it? Best to see doc to decide whether to ride it out or to go back on and withdraw slowly. Or go back on full stop if he was not ready to come off.

I have noticed a change the last few days but to be honest I really don't know when he stopped, just admitted last night that he had stopped taking them because he thought he no longer needed them.! I read somewhere agression could be a symptom Don't worry I am not scared of him, scared for him is more like it, hope he does not go back to way he was before Sad

I did stop taking mirtazapine suddenly once and would never do that again, it was horrible. I went back on it to come off slowly then started taking something else. Like madmouse says, it's never a good idea to stop a/d's suddenly. I've learned my lesson!

Violet are you able to say how it affected you? How did it manifest itself?

It was quite a while ago now and I was living alone, so it wasn't really a case of it affecting people around me. I don't know how that would have been!

I couldn't sleep, felt a terrible flu-like shivering, headaches, nausea, fear and agitation, with a kind of intense craving feeling in mind and body.

I was mighty relieved to go back on it, and eventually found a med that suited me much better anyway.

Hope it works out for you both.

tHanks violet, he is only on 30mg which I think is not too high a dosage. I will be watching him closely. He is being pretty horrible to me right now, suppose I wanted to see if it was anything to do with the meds withdrawal or him just being a git
