I've been to my GP recently because I have a problem with (what I would call compulsive) overeating.

After a chat she said as I'd identified the problem and the causes I just needed to find something to take the place of food - something instantly gratifying which makes me feel good, occupies my hands and offers comfort and absorption. We had a laugh because sex or masturbation seemed the obvious candidates Grin

Anyway, much as I agree that she is right, I'm struggling to come up with something. I'm very broke, which doesn't help. Does anyone have any suggestions for something addictive I can get myself hooked on to help manage my feelings?

I know it's quite a random request ... :)

Crochet?

Try this - it's good.

Your GP however is not good. That is nonsense advice that will not work. Eating fills an emotional void that no amount of warm baths, knitting and jigsaw puzzles will fill.

Knitting?
Scrapbooking?
Making photobooks?

Madmouse, whilst I agree with you that if overeating is due to emotional issues, then distraction techniques won't work. However, I know that sometimes I overeat purely because I'm bored and I can, which an alternative hobby would prevent. Also, even if it is for emotional reasons, at least if the OP can switch to something healthy, then the emotional reasons can be tackled separately. Even if it only works some of the time, it is better than nothing.

Crochet got me through a very difficult time after miscarriage.

Hmmmm. I suppose it does sound a bit simplistic when I read it written down.

I'll look at getting a copy of that book (to add to my library of self help books!) because I feel really ready to sort this out at the moment.
