Hi, I have name changed as I am new to the mental health board. I have been referred by my doctor for counselling and am wondering what it will be like/what to expect?

Can any of you help with your experiences or knowledge?

I have hour long sessions. From my experience the counsellor is trying to establish why I feel the way I do and trying to help me change it. She rarely comments and does not judge but just listens. The first one was quite difficult, but it is very helpful.

Thanks Sparklingbrook, I have to phone a number next week to book an appointment. Do you remember how long it took before you first saw someone?

About 3-4 weeks I think. I was very sceptical about it, but she has some interesting ideas and things she says stick with you IYKWIM and you can recall them to help you inbetween appointments. I hope you have a good experience too. Smile

It's not quick. I had 12 sessions of CBT on the NHS and only really felt I was getting somewhere by the end. It has worked for me and has been a good starting point for me for learning about my condition.

it depends on the type of counsellor and the type of counselling they offer. If you've been given a number to ring you may have been asked to self refer to IAPT service in which case you would be offered a soon-ish appointment to be assessed to see what your needs are.

Many areas offer mainly Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT these days and this is a technique which works in the here and now instead of digging in the past and focuses on changing unhelpful thoughts and patterns. It can work well depending on the problems you face.

Thanks for your replies. Have to say I am feeling a bit anxious. I have been referred to MH services by the doctor. I have to wait 4to 5 days then phone a number to book an appointment with counsellor. I will be sent 2 questionaires to fill in. I know I probably only have mild MH issues but that is for them to decide I suppose.
Just hoping I can cope with the DC being on half term this week.
