I have been suffering from PMT since my dss were born (2005). We are talking about 2 to 3 3 weeks horrible bout of depression before periods. I have lost count of how many times I wanted to kill myself. So I have been on citalopram 20 since 2005 but it didnt really do anything against pmt.

Now for the last 2 months, I have been on loestrin 20 (contraceptive pill) and the pmt completely stopped, I'm even losing weight !

My question is : Shall I go to the gp and ask if maybe I should stop the citalopram and be just on the pill ? Your experience will be much appreciated !

Interested by this as I suffer with awful pmt and have just been given same contraceptive pill by my Dr. I start it this week. I am also on citalopram (low dose) for the pmt. Will let you know how I get on.

yes please ! And I wish you all the best, I'm so much happier since I started the pill and other bonus is that I barely have periods too !

I seem to be the other way round....I've been on the pill (first Microgynon, then Yasmin) for PMT for 10 months, and it doesn't seem to have worked this time.....I was prescribed Sertralin for it recently, and got desperate enough to finally start taking it today....and I felt a distinct "shift" within a couple of hours! My severe PMT symptoms have largely melted away, although I do feel rather "trippy".

God PMT's a tricky bugger isn't it? Different solutions for different people- then, when you think you have it nailed, it crops up again.....Looking forward to hearing different people's experiences...

This is very interesting! Glad you are feeling good. I have killer PMT and also on Citalopram.

Capitaltrixie · 10/02/2012 22:13

Glad it's working for you Smile, this is really helpful (thanks for posting!) as I've just had a baby & really worried my terrible PMT will come back (usually so low for about 10 days that I struggle to function). I wasn't on any medication & every pill I tried including Yasmin made the symptoms much worse. I have taken Citalopram in the past though but it didn't do much for me. The only thing that gave me a bit of a boost was doing some exercise.

Out of interest did anyone with really bad PMT suffer really bad depression & mood swings when pregnant? (more than normal pregnancy ups & downs).

stubbornstains · 11/02/2012 14:30

I got what, in restrospect, I would class as ante-natal depression (although a lot of bad stuff was going down at the time, which didn't help..). Not so much PND though, thankfully.

Third day of Sertraline! Still not as PMT-y as normal, although do feel quite light-headed.

OP, were you recommended Loestrin20 as specifically good for PMT?

muttimalzwei · 13/02/2012 03:00

I am on Fluoxetine for PMT and it is really working. Two days before period and I get a bit grumpy but that is all now. I used to be 10 days of misery in the lead up. Citalopram did nothing for me.

Capitaltrixie · 13/02/2012 14:43

Same stubbornstains, I had ante-natal depression but not any noticeable PND either time. Are you still feeling good with the Setraline? I'm thinking about asking my doctor about it, fluoxetine sounds like it maybe an alternative though..

Diet (avoiding sugar) and exercise does help I think.

sorry don't mean to hijack your thread OP Blush, what did you decide about citalopram?

shaketheshame · 13/02/2012 16:27

I was on fluoxetine and it didn't do for me then I swiched to citalopram 10 then 20, it did help a bit, some months the pmt only lasted one day before my periods.

Around october last year, I got really fed up so I decided to everything in my power to change things. I completely stopped drinking alcohol, up my excercising, the gp increased my citalopram from 20 to 40 and it was worst.
I went back to see my gp and she gave me loestrin 20, I was sceptical as I have tried the pill before for pmt (yasmin, microthingy) and I couldnt bear it.

Anyway I gave Loestrin 20 a go and I have just started my 3rd tablets. I'm normal again and I was normal for a long time ! I'm happier, I have started putting make up on everyday. I'm much more outging, I'm relaxed and the best is that I'm finaly sticking to a diet for the first time in years (no more confort eating) and I have lost 7 pounds in 3 weeks.

trixie: This is day 5 of the sertraline and it hasn't been too great....PMT symptoms have been replaced by feeling really wired and rather odd, and I haven't slept well the last couple of nights. Well...it does warn of just these kind of side effects on the packet, but it's hard to tell how long they're going to last, especially when you're only supposed to take it some of the time for PMT. I googled sertraline loads today, and came to the conclusion that I'm going to halve the dose (50mg- 25mg) and see what happens.

Another thumbs up for Loestrin 20 eh?! That's worth bearing in mind! (I've also heard the mini pill recommended rather than the combined pill- does anyone have any experience of that?)
