Twice in 2 nights I have woken up 3am monday night and 2 am last night bolt upright and shaky wasn't completely sure where I was either had been having strange scary dreams the last few weeks as well, could only ever remember snippets of them. Any ideas what the hell is going on.

Would usually be the sort of thing to happen if there is either something you are concerned about or you have had a significant change of routine. Is there anything you can pin point? Happened to my Mum when she was grieving for a while.

Of course it does just happen so if there is nothing you can think of it is quite likely just "one of those things".

If you can't think of anything that triggered it then just the traditional advice is probably a good idea:
-Try to properly relax in the hour before going to bed
-Avoid stimulants (Caffeine, Alcohol, TV, etc) in this time
-Have a lovely hot bath and horlicks or milky drink

  • Chill read a magazine or book (to distract you/swith off)
  • Maybe have a massage if an option? Smile

Hope you get a better nights sleep tonight.

Hippolyta 20 sounds spot on.

Just want to add that sometimes we can get ourselves so worked up over bad sleeping patterns that that in itself is enough to cause enough anxiety to stop you from sleeping the next night.

The tips that Hippolyta20 gave are good.

I hope you manage to get a good sleep tonight. :)

Thanks I don't sleep very well at night due to ongoing issues but started Diazepam every other night last week usully 3-4 hours is my limit otherwise and thats not all in one go. Can never relax before bed as hard as I try.

It sounds like the medication may be impacting too. I wouldn't worry about this too much as often with medication can just take time for your body to adjust rather than being an ongoing issue. (Although perhaps discuss with your doctor if this is a common side effect)

What I have found when I struggle to sleep is that I need to stop trying so hard. I tend to try and sleep or relax for around 30 minutes but if I really can't I don't beat myself up over it, I just read for a while until I feel sleepy or in my case come downstairs for a bit and play with the dog.

I agree with sickbint, if you are lying there worrying about sleep it can be self-fulfilling. If you are wide awake, often best to get up, stay warm and do something relaxing until you feel ready to try to sleep again.

Also, your body is pretty amazing, if you do have a night with little or no sleep, it's not the end of the world. You will still be fine and propbably just crash out the next night.
