Sickness bugs - fear of.

Hi there, I have a fear of sickness (and balloons as it happens), not uncommon, but I need someone to reassure me. My three DSs and I met up with a load of friends today at one of those play places with plastic balls and slides and one of the boys who was there went home and threw up everywhere (I've just seen it posted on facebook) so now I am trying not to panic about getting it over Christmas, and / or getting it at all. I'm in that on the edge place of anxiety at the moment. I know it's pointless worrying about it as, for one, it might not even be a bug, for two, my children might not have picked it up today, and even if they do, I might not get it, and for three even if I do, I might not actually throw up. I thought that since school ended last week I could relax now but now this happens :(

Does anyone know what anti-sickness drugs (and anti-stomach cramps etc.) you can take when pregnant? I suffer majorly from this phobia and always have a stock of motilium at home but scared I won't be able to take it. And does anyone know if motilium will stop you from [v-ing] if you catch norovirus?

liveinazoo · 02/01/2012 20:26

im not aware of any that are available, though im no expert on the subject.i ate ginger biscuits and peppermints to detract from feeling crap and somehow managed to muddle through pregnancy.no help with the 2nd question either but didnt want you to feel alone and isolated.am planning to set up a thread in the next few days for fellow suffers to regularly post, offloading their worries, share facts and talk unrlated stuff to distract our attention.please fel welcome to com and join us.hope you are ok.x

MissBetsyTrotwood · 02/01/2012 21:17

I was prescribed anti sickness drugs during both my labours so I guess there must be some you can take through pregnancy? I'm not sure about norovirus.

roundabout1 · 06/01/2012 10:34

I suffer with this too, along with an inner ear disorder that can cause nausea & dizziness so not the best! When I was pregnant there were meds that I could take but none of them were available over the counter (I hadn;t tried Motillium then) May be worth talking to your gp if they are sympathetic?

natur I'm prob too late to this as I lost this thread Blush but I was prescribed over the counter antiemetics 'avomine' when pg (they have a long name which begins with a ?p? but I forget). I was then prescribed cyclizine. Don't think you can get this over the counter though. I had ms nausea pretty badly and could not have got through without them. But of course I have to say check with a doctor first of course Wink . I don't know it motilluim will stop vomiting if you have noro though, sorry.

How is everyone else?

Hi all,

I've had a terrible week as I also have this phobia and my 2 year old DD picked up a tummy bugafter her first day at a private little school. It was my worst fear. She was sick over 2 consecutive nights in the week and hasn't really eaten since.

I can't take any more so I have a gp appointment tomorrow. Do they give anti-vomiting drugs to you if you have a phobia and will they also give something for the anxiety? I was actually tempted to walk away from my Dh and DD this week, I was that terrified. I've never ever felt that bad and I worship my DD.

Will my gp help?

I hope you are all ok.

Xx

cakes Sad I feel for you. I don't know how I'll cope when dd gets a tummy bug. Did you manage to deal and look after her? I don't know if I'll manage to look after her or not for which I feel like the worst mother Blush

Re: gps and anti emetics I don't know if they'd prescribe them to you for a phobia, my gut is they won't. I admit to have embellished in the past to get some good ones on prescription which I kept for emergencies but then used them all up when I was pg before I realised I was pg (and then mced Sad ). I've been prescribed anti anxiety pills for the phobia and also was given CBT on te NHS, although in my area funds are limited so the length of appointments was such (and that I had undiagnosed pnd at the time) that it didn't help much, but I know alot of people it really makes a difference.

Reastie, you may surprise yourself on respect to your DD. I felt like you buy my DD is prone to ear infections and one of her first symptoms is vomiting due to the high temperature she gets. I actually become very protective and have been known to actually let her be sick on me so that she isn't scared.

She's the only 2year old I know though that actually goes to the bathroom to be ill though, bless her. I will cuddle her and hold her hair. But once she is cleaned up and back in bed, I break down.

My hands are sore and bleeding from all the scrubbing.

Thank you for the info about the drugs. My sister has lupus and has some anti-sickness drugs as she can't fight infections and she tends to give me some when she can. I haven't actually had to take them yet...

Xx

reastie · 16/01/2012 18:18

cakes my hands are always sore and bleeding Sad . I know this sounds odd but if DD was sick and I knew it was due to an ear infection, I would find it hard and horrible but I think I could cope. If I didn't know if it were from a bug or not I would go to pieces as I'd have the worry of if I/DH would catch it and all the worry and stress of scrubbing everything clean to try to prevent spreading it Confused

HomemadeCakes · 18/01/2012 17:50

reastie, I do know what you mean and have been faced with it again this week. Only 5 days after DD was ill with a stomach bug, she was sick again last night. It's my immediate reaction to get out of bed and go to her when I hear her wake in the night and I just couldn't believe it when she rushed towards the bathroom and lifted the toilet seat again, so soon after the last bug.

As it turns out, I went to the GP on Monday and broke down, begging for help. She is a fairly new GP and so even though she's heard of the phobia, she hasn't actually dealt with any patients with it so was unable to help from a 'longterm cure' point of view. So she's written to some colleagues for advice. But what she did do was give me some beta-blockers for the anxiety (although they don't help the fear and panic, they only help the physical anxiety symptoms like racing pulse, sweating etc) but she did give me some anti-sickness medication which will apparently stop you being sick, whatever the cause, including bugs. It's called Buccal 3mg. Basically you put a tablet between your gum and your top lip and leave it there, allowing to dissolve and enter your blood stream. Better than those that you swallow, in case you are sick and can't keep it down. It takes 1-2 hours to dissolve and stops you being sick/feeling sick.

I took one last night and one this afternoon and all seems well so far. But then DD was only sick once last night at 10.30pm and was fine for the rest of the night and all day today, so keeping everything crossed that it might not have been a bug afterall.

Anyway, it may be worth asking your GP for the anti-sickness tablets. Although I have heard that you can also get them over the pharmacy...

reastie · 18/01/2012 18:27

cakes poor you with the bug and dd - I really feel for you. I'm so so scared of what to do when dd gets something. I'm just praying she'll be one of those children to rarely have stomach complaints, but I know that's sort of just hoping. I'm bfing her still (she's 11 months) and will continue if I can for another year in the evening as I'm obsessed hoping the longer I do this the better her immune system so the less sick she will be. It's all very selfish if I'm honest. The buccal tablets I've had before - I was prescibed them when I had nausea and dizziness for months when coming off of the pill as my hormones are sensitive - they are great pill Grin I'm actually Envy of you having them ( Shock ). I used most of mine up so maybe have 1 left. I tried to get another prescription a few months ago saying my hormones were struggling to adapt post baby (which was true) but I wasn't allowed them as I was bfing Angry . I'll try again when I stop bfing Wink . Tbh I don't think my gp would give them to me for the phobia. I can't swallow tablets as I am scared of getting them stuck in my throat and choking and then being sick and my gp sent me to a therapist to make myself swallow tablets rather than just prescribe me everything in liquid. I still can't swallow tablets!! Keep me updated on what the gp comes back with.

HomemadeCakes · 18/01/2012 19:11

I've read online that buccal can be given by a pharmacy. They are more expensive that way but once you've stopped bfing you can get some if your gp won't prescribe...

So, a quick question about them, do they start to work as soon as they start to dissolve? I've tale them 'just incase' so far because I wasn't sure how quick they would work if I already felt sick... any ideas?

reastie · 19/01/2012 07:19

I will look into that cakes - I can take expensive if that's how I need to get them Grin . I don't know re: your question though. I know they take a while to dissolve so guess the effect is built up as more dissolves (and no medication that I know of like this works instantaneously). I know this is disgusting my my gp told me they are ones that dissolve in your mouth not that you swallow so that if you are sick they should stay there and continue working, and if they were swallowed they might get out of your system as it were if you were sick soon after Confused (really hope I didn't make you feel queasy). I know that doesn't help or answer your question though. I found when taking them when pg (before I knew I was pg) within half an hour I'd feel alot better and almost instantaneously I'd feel an improvement just as mentally it felt like I was 'safe' from being sick from taking one IYKWIM (placebo effect works on me!).
