Not Citalopram cos I've tried that before. ECitalopram/cipralex. Trying to figure out the best time to start and wondered how long it was before people felt the side effects. Sorry for typos, am on phone and the text is teeny tiny.

Ive been on ecitalopram for 9 months and found for the first 2 months I had the sick feeling most days which started straight away, i did start gertting the signs of seratonin syndrome but this was stopped by reducting the dose for 3 months.

Did the nausea start with the first tablet?

I have tried various ADs - fluoxotine, citalopram, venlafaxine. I seem to be particularly sensitive to them. I am now on Sertraline. After a lot of research, it seemed to be the one with the best compromise between dealing with the depression and having less side effects. Quite often, side effects do happen very quickly but many of them lessen after a few weeks or months of taking the tablets. I am fairly happy on the sertraline. I have lots of side effects but I can just about cope with this. In theory all sertraline is the same but I even find that a change of brand/maker of sertraline changes my side effects.

I've had citalopram, venlafaxine, mirtazapine and sertraline most recently. Had amytriptyline too I think. Fluoxetine is one they are reluctant to give me because I needed v close monitoring on it last time - admittedly that was over 10 years ago.

Were u able to get on with the day to day stuff when u started?

i found it difficult to concentrate, driving became difficult and found i was snappy for a few months, I also had bad dreams for a few weeks but these soon passed.
Have you started taking them, yet and finding any problems? Must be difficult with all you are going through, hope you have got supportive family and friends

Escitalopram is an enantiomer of Citalopram so will probably have exactly the same effects on you.

PaperView · 08/12/2011 18:46

enantiomer? What does that mean?

OP posts:
hellomotoe · 08/12/2011 22:06

An enantiomer means the drugs contain the same molecules but just arranged in a different way spacially (geeky Chemistry hat on). However, enantiomers do have different chemical properties. For example, thalidomide, an anti-sickness medication given to mothers in the late 50s and 60s, which caused birth defects in children has one enantiomer that causes the devastating side-effects, whilst the other does not (this wasn't known at the time).

So whilst escitalopram is related to citalopram, ie: it contains the same elements in its structure, it does react differently to citalopram and has different chemical properties. So if citalopram isn't suitable for you, it doesn't mean escitalopram won't be.

HTH, and hope I didn't bore you to tears!

I started on sertraline but had terrible side effects straight away. I only lasted three days on it. Was prescribed escitalopram instead and the only side effect I've had is loss of libido/sensitivity. Other than that no side effects at all. It's not ideal but a price I'm willing to pay. Hth

I'll reread when I'm not so tired but I think I understand!
