hello,
ive finally been given the correct prescription.
had a terrible doctor who told me all sorts of crap, thanks to you guys i went back,to see a different doctor who was VERY lovely and helpful, she researched breastfeeding and anti depressants/anxiety med's,she called me the next day and said i (well you guys) were correct, sertraline was the way to go.

i went to pick up the prescription today and ive just sat down and read the 'instructions'.
i read the side effects, and i am panicking...
terrifying dreams,insomnia,restlessness, fatigue, dizziness, nausea...

is there anyone who hasn't had these side effects,or who can tell me they're not that bad,or that i'll feel much better so it's worth it?
is there a 'good' time to take them?(evening, morning?food?)

many thanks.

I meant to say @lawriemarlow - lawrie metcalf is an actress I think...

friggFRIGG · 14/09/2011 20:25

i really think you need to start taking your meds again blonde
and go to see your GP.

if your psyc' said it was safe, then i expect it IS safe,a quote from a book your mum read probably wasnt all it seemed to be.

from what i know, sertraline is the safest drug of it's type to be on whilst pregnant or breastfeeding (i know someone else who's psych' told her to take it whilst she was pregnant too) and also that its far better (for you and any potential baby) to be stable, and on med's than un-stable and off them.

good luck TTC Smile

Just wanted to thank you frigg and others on this thread for your advice. I saw GP and she suggested I take another AD rather than Sertraline. I think it's called fluoXetine (old Prozac) as it seems my depression is more down to shock and bereavement (and a bit of a mortality check) rather than anxiety that Sertraline is so good for.
Thanks for all the advice you gave though, it's been essential in keeping me sane in the process.
Good luck to you all with your mental health and happiness.

Have ressurected this thread as it is about the dilemma i am in !
I took seroxat years ago and it really was a wonder drug for me gave me self esteem and made me feel normal and loose the crippling anxiety that had stalked me my whole life. I did not take it for that long but gradually over the years my old neurotic personality traits have come back.
Decided to start back on it on a low dose and increase it but I have got scared as was suffering dizzy spells at night.
Doctor has prescribed sertraline instead but if the side effects are that bad I may as well stay on seroxat Sad
Anyone give me any advice please?

Hi, please start your own thread with your own problem in the title - you will get better responses that way

I'm taking 100mg sertraline. Been on for 2 weeks. I'm so so tired and can't be bothered to do anything. I am a mother of 4 and I work. But since taking these I just want to sleep all the time. I read online that your meant to take them in the morning? And someone I know has taken them for 9 years says morning as well as you need what they release in the day time. That's why people don't sleep well at nyt and are tired in the day. Anyone else have any ideas?

Psion · 16/09/2016 18:26

Hi Kelly

I started taking Sertraline nearly 3 months ago. Started on 50mg and felt very dreamy and very lethargic for the first 3 weeks. I actually rather enjoyed it. But it faded away.

Then after 6 weeks I increased to 75mg and enjoyed another couple of weeks of lethargy. But again it wore off.

I'm just on the point of increasing to 100mg as I'm still getting bad blips of anxiety (mine is caused by hormonal imbalances due to being peri menopausal).

So, I would recommend you stick with it because the tiredness does go away.

Psion · 16/09/2016 18:28

Also, I take it at breakfast but my GP said I could switch it to bedtime if the tiredness got too bad (so that you sleep the worst of it off).

Kellyaldridge1979 · 16/09/2016 19:11

Hi. Thanku for commenting. I wasn't sure if anyone would as it is an old post.I take my 100mg at dinner time as doc said. I sleep fine. Quiet deep as I didn't before and kept waking up. But I'm tired through the day. I could easily fall asleep with a click of a finger. Lol. Maybe I should try it in the morning to see Wat happens. I dunno. Confused

Psion · 16/09/2016 20:31

Well, as it's only been two weeks I would wait and give it chance to settle into your system.

Kellyaldridge1979 · 16/09/2016 21:28

Yea ill try. Thanks x

I have had the sertraline in my drawer for 3 months and I am just so scared to take it but I know I desperately need to- -any tips so appreciated. My doctor said to start on 12.5mg for a week and then work myself up to a full tablet of 50mg- hoping this will minimise any potential side efffects

srh82 · 01/02/2017 20:39

Hi everyone, I have read the thread so I think the answer is clear for me and I should take the Sertraline prescribed for my extreme anxiety. It has come to the point where it effects my relationships and my confidence has been very low even though I am usually a very confident person. I just wondered how ppl found going to work or going about daily chores, my main concern is I am self employed and I couldn't possibly miss work, I'm afraid of taking the sertraline as many have suffered with nausea and when I had a nervous breakdown last year I had dyspepsia too which went undiagnosed for 4 months, I fear that I felt so nauseous then and couldn't face work that this is how the sertraline may make me feel. I just wondered how extreme it might be? I know everyone is different but having had a horrific experience on fluoxetine I have really been put off trying another! :(

geologyrocks · 04/02/2017 22:26

Hey, did you start taking it? I didnt experience nausea..lots of other symptoms which i made a thread about. I think everyone is different.

I saw some people on here halved the dose for a week first to see how they got on. Has your doctor suggested that?

Aroundtheworldandback · 04/02/2017 22:46

Solo (if you're still here), do you mind me asking if you are cured of your ME? A family member is on Sertraline and has ME so I just wondered.

Margaret1982uk · 05/02/2017 11:47

Day 18 on sertraline and feel worse beyond belief - going back to doctor tomorrow am so sad this is happening had so much hope for these to work

fallenempires · 06/02/2017 13:23

srh is there any chance that you can start them on a less busy week? What dosage have you been given?

bigbuttons · 06/02/2017 13:34

Sertraline was vicious nasty stuff. I had to stop taking it. I never let so miserable as when I was taking it.

fallenempires · 06/02/2017 13:50

big which ones did you switch to?

Purplebluebird · 06/02/2017 14:14

Sertraline was fine for me, though I did feel nauseous, but not so much that I had to stay home from work.

I also had a nasty experience with fluoxetine! Sertraline is different, and seems "milder" in a way.

I'm on escitalopram now, which was horrible in the beginning, but fine after a week :)

bigbuttons · 06/02/2017 14:17

I didn't switch. I took nothing else. I decided to approach my anxiety from a different angle, rather than just masking it.
I realised on sertraline that I felt so numb and spaced out that I was incapable of feeling or speaking.
I take 5htp in the mornings now and am reading an amazing book called 'dare' which has a different approach to dealing with anxiety. I highly recommend it.
I would rather have high anxiety than feel they way I did on sertraline.
