the side effects and withdrawal symptoms can be awful. i had electric shock like feelings in my head when the dosage of my AD was lowered or i took it slightly late.
some of them can make you feel worse.
they take a while to start working. usually you get put on a low dosage which is put up after a few weeks.
not every AD will be right for you. some make you feel very numb, almost emotionless.
that's all i can think of for now.

Which one were you taking, Lilac Bump to get the "head shocks"? Was it Effexor/Venlafaxine?

take between 2 and 6 weeks to start working

you can feel more anxious/have other side effects like dodgy tummy/insomnia the first couple of weeks while your body gets used to it (people on here seem to have had a particularly tough time when starting one called Cipralex).

they might not be the right one for you - so might not work

I have had the dubious privilege of starting 4 different ADs over the last ten years - OCD/depression - e-mail me ([email protected]) if you want to chat further

Im on cipralex and the first few days i had headaches and dizzyness, two weeks on im feeling tired but im feeling great in myself. (see the "i would just like to say..." thread, thats my description of it.

Donbean · 30/11/2005 09:59

Are you having a tough time sbol?

LilacBump · 30/11/2005 11:59

mummytoseven, it was efexor! it took over 3 months for the head shock thing to go. and DP also took efexor and had the same experience with it.
i was also on seroxat and it was terrible, made me suicidal when before i was only anxious.

Prozac (Fluoxetine) I was fine with, it just took a while to get going. Citalopram made me feel more anxious/dizzy/sweating but worked more quickly.

Had an instant bad reaction to Sertaline. Anxiety levels rocketed and I started having panic attacks. Much worse than I had been with 'mere' PND. That was on top of the usual AD stuff like dry mouth, upset stomach, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, which are meant to sort themselves out quite quickly. Came off sertraline on day 4, by which point I was a zombie.
No side effects at all with my oldstyle tricyclic AD, dosulepin/dothiepin. Had to steel myself to take the first tablet, but very glad I did.
As MTS says, it is impossible to predict whether an AD will suit. It's trial and error: not ideal, considering how vulnerable/low you have to be when starting on ADs.
Mind you, I was unlucky. 99 out of 100 people have no reaction to sertraline.
A psychiatrist friend suggested that if at all possible, it would be good to have company when starting the medication. Just someone around to keep an eye out.

biglipskissinunderthemistletoe · 02/12/2005 14:22

can you drink whilst on them?

Tommy · 02/12/2005 14:42

I've been on 2 lots at different times and the first lot (really sorry - can't remember the name) made me really thirsty - the GO had said a "dry mouth" but I was having to swig bottles of water all day and I also couldn't drink alchohol on them - someone said "Oh, and that's supposed to make you feel better is it?..."
BUT, a few years later I was on Prozac and I didn't have any side effects at all - I came off them gradually but, likewise, you have to build them up gradually so they take a couple of weeks or so to kick in. Good luck

LilacBump · 02/12/2005 14:45

i was told by my GP that it's not wise to drink as alcohol is a depressant.
