Sertraline vs prozac...starting out

Hi, I have taken prozac on and off for years before having children and found it had little side effects and really helped me. In the last few years I've either been pregnant of breastfeeding, and the GP has recommended sertraline instead. This is due to it being less absorbed by the baby from breastmilk. Prozac, although it works well for me, has a longer 'half life' and also transfers more to your child. With prozac on starting I felt a gradual difference after about 2 weeks with little side effects. Anyway I've been finding starting sertraline much more difficult than with prozac. I have many more side effects including dry mouth, increased anxiety, general floaty feeling, headaches, shakiness, nightmares on missing a dose...I wonder if it is to do with the prozac taking longer to build up within your system if you see what I mean, the half life of sertraline is just a few hours rather than a week of so, which ironically seems to be the thing which makes it better for breastfeeding. After a few hours of taking the pill I feel strang and I'm just hoping things start to even out a bit. I've started taking half of it mornings and the other half a bit later and that seems to be a bit better. It definitely doesn't seem as 'easy' going as prozac though and neither did citalopram, i hated that! I am wondering if the problem is that I am quite anxious and sertraline and citalopram seem to increase that a bit well to start with anyway whereas prozac is more calming. It sounds daft but i miss prozac, it felt safe somehow whereas this one more kind of volatile! No probs coming off prozac either, am unsure how this will be. Hey ho, I guess it would be good to stop breatfeeding but don't really want to do that.

Just wondered about any other experiences along these lines...x

I've just started it too. Wld have been put on venlafaxine again but because I miscarried in jan and want to ttc psych recommended sertraline. Side effects have been horrible. Headaches, feeling constantly sick, increased anxiety, tiredness (altho no improvement in insomnia!). If I had my way I'd stop taking it altogether but I've just spend 5 weeks on the psych ward so I don't think it wld be the best idea i've ever had!

Doc keeps saying to stick with it and the side effects will go but i've never had this with any of the others.

Let's just hope the docs are right xxx

I'm nearly positive I was taking Prozac whilst breastfeeding with no problems...I had to change as it made my appetite non existent! I had problems with citalopram and sertraline due to my anxiety which defo made things worse...I think it was nausea my main problem though.
Venlafaxine sent me completely crazy...hypomanic episode due to the withdrawal!
I'm now taking mirtazapine which work brilliantly...they have a mild sedative effect so good if u struggle sleeping or anxiety is worse in an evening as they work instantly but I felt loads better after 3 weeks generally.
I'm taking 15mg whilst pregnant and dr wants me to continue so I imagine they're safe to take.

I tried mirtazapine too and while the sedative effect was fab I cld't cope with the weight gain. Interesting to know it's another option when pregnant as I didn't experience any other side effects. Venlafaxine was fine while I was on it but horrible if I missed a dose and withdrawal wasn't nice at all.

For me I think prozac was probably the easiest to get started on too

Defo with you on the weight gain! Weight started creeping up before I got pregnant and now the size of a whale! Might have to change again if I struggle losing it all tho!

Hi thanks for your replies. Upsydaisy I've been struggling with the side effects but just the last couple of days it seems to be getting better. It was the increased anxiety/shakiness I was finding especially hard. Interesting to hear others have found it tricky and others including prozac easier in terms of side effects. I am thinking I might try to change when the little one stops breastfeeding but no sign yet.

Hi again just wanting to mention to anyone else starting out with sertraline that the side effects seem to be getting better. this is after about two eeks. I've starting splitting the tablet and taking part in the morning and the other mid afternoon, with a snack. This seems to be helping. The nausea feeling after taking seems to be better when taken with food.
