Where can I get info about mental health?

hiya,
I'm looking for a bit of info - I want to know more about my illness so I can help myself - I tend to get a bit overwhelemed when I see professionals and make out everything is ok - eg last time i saw someone, I spent an hour chatting about the weather and the kids and DH, and only at the end, when FIL was walking down the drive with the kids, did i whisper "I keep crying when I walk down the street. I'm really, really low." and of course she couldn't reply because FIL was there. That's not even the half of it as well - things are worse, but I only ever admit that in a crisis.

That's a side issue anyway. I need to know what the options are, what the theories are about how these things happen, how the drugs work, whether there is a way of stopping the anxiety without diazepam (which i love, but not good to use lots) and ways of getting to sleep on bad nights without zopiclone that knocks me out all the next day, or some way of keeping in reality without anti psychotics. Or is there anti psychotics or anti depressants thvt can be taken prn? I don't need them all the time (in fact would be counter productive) but sometimes I need them badly. hopefully the mood stabilisers will kick in soon. I need more info on how things work. I'm a bookish person - I like to know things. I'm confident I would understand if given enough info, but just don't know where to start - if i just get a medicvl textbook, I wouldn't have the basic knowledge to understand yet, but a lot of the basic guides seem to just say to get more exercise, which isn't really that helpful.

Sane might be a good place to start. If you find it hard to talk to a professional, might it help to write things down? Take the notes to your meeting to keep you on track, or even just hand over the notes if you run out of time.

I hope you find the help you need.
