and can't get my head round posting on my regular threads sorry.

ds is having a procedure under GA tomorrow and I'm not coping terribly well. I know I'm overreacting and I'm doing my best.

Back soon x

You may not read this now but i thought i would write anyway...

Hi Madmouse, you are bound to be feeling anxious, and you should not be so hard on yourself about it.

The rational side of you I am sure knows that your Ds will be in very safe hands and will be fine, but of course there is always the other (irrational) side of us that starts to worry and doesnt know how to stop.

So Try and relax as much as possible tonight, and have a warm bath. You know you probably may not sleep well tonight if you are feeling so anxious, so get yourself propped up in bed with some good music or tv to try and numb your brain a bit to allow you to relax if possible.

Just a suggestion but maybe think of practical things you can do for tomorrow to make the day a bit easier for you both.. i.e. Pack a picnic for yourself as you know hospital food is awful, have toys for DS to play with, pack a pen and paper so that you can write down your worries as it always helps to vocalise our feelings to help make sense of them.etc....

Will be thinking of you, and you DS. :)

Hi Madmouse here's a hug from me too and I'll also be thinking of you and your DS tomorrow. The suggestions from Am36butfeel66 are very helpful I think - I like the idea of writing down your feelings and thoughts as you get through tomorrow.

I will send you some relaxing vibes this evening to help you sleep. Everything will be ok tomorrow. I remember DS2 having to go under GA for a small operation when he was 18 months so I know something of what you are feeling right now but you'll be ok, I know you will, you are such as strong person xxx

Pancakeflipper · 07/04/2011 21:10

Madhouse, of course you are anxious. It's your baby ( whatever the age - still your baby).

Logically you know your child is in excellent hands. But it irrational emotional side is in overdrive. Deep breathing, make sure your mobile is fully charged so you can text and call everyone when they are in surgery to occupy yourself.

Got any lavendar oil? Burn some, bathe in some or sniff it on a tissue?

Everything will go well. Uncharacterist hugs for you.

Pancakeflipper · 07/04/2011 21:11

Sorry - for some reason my iTouch insists on calling you Madhouse not Madmouse. Sorry.

FAB5 · 07/04/2011 21:11

It is normal to be worried. My DD had to have a GA when she wasn't quite 2 and that was after an accident so no time for fretting.

Do you know what will happen and how long he will be under for?

twoisplenty · 07/04/2011 21:14

I shall think of you tomorrow Madmouse. Wishing you and your ds all the best. xx

madmouse · 07/04/2011 21:29

Thanks all xx

He is having botox injections in his right arm to relax some of the spastic muscles. He is 3 and wants to use his arm more but can't. The procedure itself is very safe and done with very thin needles so it's not even a 'proper' operation. He's having a general because he needs to lie very still.

We have been told he will be back with us in an hour at most. We need to be at hospital at 7.30am and because he will be one of the youngest he should go as one of the first.

Just scared of the GA as it is out of my control (biiig thing - control) and becuase he had severe neonatal seizures but against the odds has not developed epilepsy so my big fear is him getting it as a result of this GA which his consultant says is not going to happen.

Madmouse, my ds who is 12yo, has had many GA for botox. It's such a quick procedure so the GA is very "light". It's so quick. He will be back with you on the ward before you get a chance for a cup of tea! I really hope the botox works for your ds, it has had good results for my ds leg muscles. It's good stuff!

madmouse · 07/04/2011 21:45

twoisplenty that means so much - thank you for telling me that x

consultant and physio hope that he can make permanent progress through intensive physio (she will come twice a week for a few months instead of once) and daily exercises so that he will have more use of the arm even after it wears off.

OP posts:
twoisplenty · 07/04/2011 21:49

Yes, that sounds about right, lots of physio when the tight muscles are paralysed for a while helps strengthen the weak muscles.

It's all hard work isn't it? Anyway my ds actually enjoys the ward as the toys are wonderful and he gets lots of attention from me for the day! The anaesthetic wears off quickly (although every child reacts differently) and soon demands a drink and toast!

As I say, I shall think of you tomorrow and wishing you the best.

madmouse · 07/04/2011 21:53

I hope we are released quickly as I find hospital traumatic - thanks to ds's hairy first few weeks in nicu/scbu I am totally allergic to saturation monitors and other alarms and just get very stressed.

FAB5 · 08/04/2011 08:05

I hope it all goes okay.

Am36butfeel66 · 08/04/2011 08:25

By this time you will be at hospital and DS may even be in having Botox done at the moment.
Just wanted to let you know am thinking about you and sending relaxing vibes to you.

You will be home very soon having a cuddle with DS in the sun. :)

madmouse · 08/04/2011 11:59

We're home and it's all gone really well - ds is totally recovered from the anaesthetic (thankfully he was in theatre by 8.30 and out within half an hour) and back to his normal happy self. He's also already had a go at picking something up with his right hand and nearly managed. Consultant very pleased. Thanks for all the support xxx

cityhobgoblin · 08/04/2011 12:06

So sorry missed this till now madmouse but you were in my thoughts & prayers. It's amazing that ds is already experiencing such a difference.
Please take extra care of yourself after such a stressful week.

Am36butfeel66 · 09/04/2011 01:26
