Would you think this behaviour was cause for concern or just eccentric?

If somebody developed a sudden interest in guinea pigs and decided they wanted to open a guinea pig rescue?

Then over a 2 week period spent several hundred buying hutches and went on three spreads trips to 'rescue' guinea pigs. One journey was 20 miles, the second was 30ish miles and the third was 60+ miles.

Would you think this was somebody experiencing a bipolar mania?

That should be separate

Why would that be manic? It's just someone jumping in feet first.

PaperView · 07/04/2011 17:26

If there was no interest in guinea pigs previously i would worry (unless GPs are just an addition to an existing rescue centre place) but if there was previous of mania's then yes i would probably think that.

No I can't afford it at all.

It's just my psychiatrists is saying I am bipolar but I don't really believe him. I think he is over reacting

yes memoo that sounds like mania too me

nevergoogle · 07/04/2011 17:37

your psychiatrist will have more information than us.

but yes, i'd say cause for concern.

madmouse · 07/04/2011 17:47

Memoo this scenario has classic mania aspects to it

It's a big plan devised at the spur of the moment that you cannot afford either in money or in time/practicalities - have you considered that you will need some sort of permission to run a sanctuary for example.

Your psychiatrist is right to be concerned - maybe give him/her a chance to explain why they think you are bipolar

Crawling · 07/04/2011 17:55

I am type 1 bipolar I would say it is something I would do while hypomanic but on its own it is too mild for mania, did he say type 1 or 2?

laInfanta · 07/04/2011 18:00

No one on here can give you any better advice than your psychiatrist.

MadMommaMemoo · 07/04/2011 18:20

He said 'hypomania' so I'm assuming he means type 2. I'm seeing him every week at the moment.

Madmouse, i hadn't considered any of those things and now I've got 6 guinea pigs now but it would be closer to 30 if dh hadn't stopped me.

I don't understand how I have been treated for depression and aniexty for 10 years and then suddenly it's bipolar. Surely it would have been picked up by now?

DarrellRivers · 07/04/2011 18:27

I would be concerned also

madmouse · 07/04/2011 18:32

Memoo I understand from others that it is not unusual to go undiagnosed for a long time

MadMommaMemoo · 07/04/2011 18:42

My head is whirling, I don't know why though. Its not like it changes anything, it's just giving my demons a new name.

ah then yes that is exactly the kind of thing I would do while hypomanic. It does not rule out type 1 (as you may have had a previos mania or may in future) but type 1s experience depression, mixed, hypomania and mania. Type 2s experience depression, mixed and hypomania.

Try to trust him it took me 6 months to accept my diagnosis but I am much happier now. Type 2s are on average misdiagnosed as depression for about 10 years. The hypos are normally overlooked please trust him even if your not bipolar mood stabilzers are very helpful with depression.

FAB5 · 07/04/2011 18:46

I have been depressed for years and haven't really had a proper diagnosis yet. It can take a long time.

MadMommaMemoo · 07/04/2011 20:55

He started me on Olanzapine which I was quite resistant to at first because it comes under that lovely banner of 'anti-psychotic' But having been on it for a week I have to say I do feel calmer.

My mind feels quieter than it has done in a long time, like somebody has turned the dial down a bit.
