i'd really appreciate some advice on finding help.

my brother is 24, is suffering terribly and feeling suicidal. he has been prescribed valium and various anti depresants for a few years but has never been referred to anyone who could help more specifically

he returns to gp for repeat prescriptions tomorrow. he's asked for help but was told waiting lists were 12 months + for psychiatric assesments. almost 2 months ago he was about to commit suicide, called gp surgery and was seen by someone who promised him a priority referral. he is still waiting and still struggling with urge to suicide.

he's abandoning all hope. how or where can he get help

Can you ring your local mental health crisis team,if you ring nhs direct they may be able to find you the number.

I have just looked at the top of this page, there are a variety of numbers that you can contact if you click on the links, but if you feel he is a serious suicide risk atm i would ring nhs direct or if he is willing try to get him to your local a+e.Most a+e should have a psych nurse attached for mental health crises (well i hope this is the case, thye did when was a student nurse on placement)(disclaimer,i am not mental health trained)

If he feels up to talking to someone impartial there are also the Samaritans.

i know a number of people who have just turned up at the local hospital psychiatric unit and refuse to leave until some one talks to them ... it seems to work for them. I agree with mavis, ring the the mental helth crisis team. You should be able to find their number via google eg. seach using ".....shire mental health crisis team".

thanks for replies.
when my brother was about to commit suicide and called gp out of hours, he was visited by psychiatric nurse and followed up by gp. they told him he would 'jump list' and see a psychiatrist in a couple of months. he's still waiting.

meanwhile he is sat at home in same state. i live 4hr drive away so can't go with him to gp.

he's obviously in great mental distress and everyday there's a real risk he will commit suicide. he's very much locked in that zone.

i talk to him most days and have sent links to websites like mind etc, he's talked to samaritans before over years

he's very clear that what he needs is professional help. he wants to know what's 'wrong' with him, get medications, get help on how to live.

he can go to A&E and ask for help there.

if he calls you andis suicidal you can call police to go check on him - they might take him to A&E (or call paramedics to take him)
