Contreception and mental health

I seriously need to do something about contreception, but it is suspected (and, tbh, almost certain) that hormones play a big part in my mental health. However, every time I mention it to my mental health team, they won't get involved, as they don't deal with that side of things. I'm worried that the nurse at the GPs won't be knowledgable about my (sometimes quite severe) mental health problems.

Any ideas?

Ask your GP to refer you to a gynaecologist with an interest in contraception

I would go for non hormonal contraceptions.

What non hormonal ones are there though? The idea of anything being left inside me (ie a coil or implant) just would not work with my general squeamishness, and condoms break.

What about condoms and a diaphram? if you are after a hormonal method then the patch is the lowest hormonal method available other than mini pill or a copper coil I think.

PLus I've had strong hormonal responses on the mini pill but been fine on a more old-fashioned 'heavier' pill. That's why I said go see gynaecologist

Will they let me be referred for something as minor as this though? The recptionist wouldn't even let me see the GP- my appointment is with the nurse.

It's not minor it's major

Don't tell the receptionist it's for birth control, tell her it's for depression and see the doctor

butterpieify · 14/03/2011 13:35

Wouldn't that be flagged up on the system, as I am under a specialist team for mental health?

I don't know what the system is like! I don't understand practices where you have to tell an unqualified receptionist what your problem is before you see a doctor.
