Do the benefits of Prozac outweigh the side effects?

IHateBadGrammar · 01/03/2011 13:14

I started with Prozac last Wednesday, taking one just before bed as they say they can cause drowsiness and I can't afford to be unable to drive. I have suffered quite badly with vomiting and/or diarrhoea every morning (quite like morning sickness) since taking them and need to convince myself that the benefits outweigh the side effects, so if anyone can give help on how to cope with that I would be really grateful?

BoredCommuter · 15/04/2011 19:59

I love her books, there's a third one with Glue in the name. Wendy Holden is also good light relief.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. Had had bad couple of days, but felt a lot better today

glad people are noticing a difference taking prozac
I have noticed that my legs ache a lot anyone else get that?

BUT when i was at my most anxious at work i felt like my legs were going to give way very strange? anxious legs?!!

brightermornings · 16/04/2011 11:46

I haven't got aching legs but when I go for my haircut my hairdresser comments on how much it's grown and I go every 5 weeks without fail! I'm having a really good few days got loads of jobs done round the house and am feeling very energetic. I've been on ad's since end of dec so it's nearly 4 months. So everyone whose struggling you will get better just take it one day at a time.

philnteds · 16/04/2011 20:30

Are most people taking 20mg? I am not 100% I am about 80% which is good but i could be better the anxiety hasn't totally gone but then i have only been on Prozac for over two weeks, I am thinking perhaps it takes a while to build up in your system? thanks

IHateBadGrammar · 19/04/2011 18:16

Hi all. Not been on here for a while so though I would check in ! I am on 20mg philnteds, and been taking them for 6 weeks now. Generally speaking i fell totally back to normal Grin. The side effects seem to have all worn off; I am eating as normal, coping with nights out (though few and far between) and back at work. Still got itchy skin from time to time whcih I think is related to hayfever.
Keep smiling everyone Wink

I'm off for a few days now last time I was off was christmas and I was really bad I thought I was having a breakdown. I'm really looking forward to being off this time because I feel better and can function.
I hope the sunshine is helping everyone feel better.

Hi brightermornings and anyone else reading this (is anyone else reading this?!!) Ahh enjoy your days off brightermornings Easter is a lovely time of year.

I am not so good i am afraid I think I am 'pretending to be ok' when i am not ok the MHTeam are somewhat helpful but I feel like i pretty much have to get through this myself :( still work issues causing this and as my DH pointed out this (or similar) has happened in the past......

brightermornings · 20/04/2011 22:48

Could you cut your hours at work? Will you get any more counselling? It does take a while for the tablets to really make a difference. I know it's hard but you will feel better. Do you get any time to yourself?

philnteds · 20/04/2011 23:00

Hi thanks for reply i actually do very little i am only doing 7.5 hours a week!!! To me that is the big joke that so little work is causing so much stress :( although obv. for me its no joke. The lady at the MH Team suggested an 'adjustment disorder' which i must Google haven't had chance yet...and she might be right because i seem to be having trouble adjusting to change

I have no time to myself except the odd evening when i am on my own as DH works away and i find personally that DS wakes up at 6am and i am pretty much on the go until about 8:30pm by the time i have cleaned up etc i assume that is the same for everyone else?

IHateBadGrammar · 23/04/2011 10:35

shebear · 28/04/2011 17:44

hey I've been on Prozac for about 20 years. I think I might get prize for being person on it for longest but it changed my life. I take in mornings unless I forget. If I forget I take as soon as I remember.

Sometimes I don't take for a few days and then start to feel really down which is what's happening at the mo!I think but could be other stuff. tut! have tried to come off but that always ends in tears.

In the beginning there were side effects first two weeks of feelling a bit sick but I think thats all ... I take 20mg a day.

I recommend if you have depression that you can't afford to treat with copious therapy or therapy too difficult for whatever reason. partic if you have children as some children never recover from having a depressed parent. some won't agree with this approach, but I found I started to enjoy my life for the first time ever.

philnteds · 28/04/2011 22:49

Hi shebear 20 years of prozac wow! I have to admit that so far its the best drug i have ever taken my only worry is gaining weight but i feel so much better than i felt before.

I do worry about my DS and i wouldn't want my anxiety to have any impact on him. The Prozac seems to be helping my confidence and is making me more chatty so hopefully this will be positive for DS its time to meet some more people and make some more friends :)

Pixielovescake · 29/04/2011 00:19

Hello everyone. Hope you re all doing well. I feel pretty much normal really. Well not normal for me , normal as in hope i imagine other people feel. Its quite amazing really. Never knew what i was missing.

philandteds glad you are having a few good days.
shebear , may i ask a slightly personal question if you ve been on prozac so long as Im pretty sure im going to be on it for the rest of my life. Im only 23 :(

Does it ever affect you sexually ? Ive heard that it does and i think it affects me. I dont have a partner right now so im reluctant to bring it up with my gp as its almost a non issue but one day if i am with someone id like it to feel as good as it did before and im not sure if thats possible on the drugs :(
Erm. If i need to explain its like im less sensitive or something, it takes longer doesnt feel as intense etc.
anyone else want to join in the cringe fest with me ?

Youhave0class · 16/07/2017 20:40

Before you and your GP or other non-qualified physicians play Psychiatrist and Patient proceeding to prescribing Prozac or practice psychopharmacology on you.
Only a competent Psychiatrist should be consulted about a mental health problem.
The patient MUST cooperate and comply with treatment. The pocess of discovering what the cause and treatment are can be lengthy. Underlying causes may be heridty , accidents, etc, Without PROPER treatment you may may experience serious mental health problems.Even suicide. Treatment takes time, money, and EFFORT.
