Genuine quick question for those feeling depressed.

when depression was really bad I had suicidal thoughts about 5/6 times a day had it planned out etc. Now I am still suffering depression and the suicidal thoughts etc are about once or twice a week and would use same plan.

i don't think there is any "normal" it differs from person to person.

but if you are having suicidal thoughts then you do need to get some help.

There's no such thing as "normal" - it differs from person to person, and each person will find it differs from day to day, or even hour to hour. Each person experiences depression in a different way.

If you feel you are depressed, see your GP - particularly if you are having really bad patches or are feeling suicidal.

Medication, therapy... talking to certain people i know who are very good at making me see sense!

Exercise works for some people (did for me) as it releases endorphins - this can include speed walking with a pushchair or baby in a sling if getting out on your own is hard work. Gettting your heart rate up and breaking a sweat for at least 20 mins. And doing things that make you feel good e.g. being outdoors, among trees, swiming, whatever...

But agree, if feeling suicidal, best to get some help. You don;t necessarily need to get medication or counselling, but they do help. You need to work out what will work for you though, and don't rule anything out until you have given it a good try (at least a month I would think)

I suffer from horrfic depression, most of the time I get suicidal thoughts a few times a week. Arouny the time of my period I get suicidal thoughts which become plans throughout the day. When I am stressed and on my period (ie now!) I am constantly bombarded by suicidal thoughts which are carefully thought and planned out. When I get like I am today my dp has to audit the house and remove anything I could use and hide my medication from me.

But I know that I am a serious case and as PotPourri says exercise helps as does keeping busy. I find that when I am working or have something to keep me busy my despression almost disapears.

As starlover has said depression is different for every person and if you are having suicidal thoughts you do need to seek help.

Dior I get two year cycles as well, I have been realy well now for about two years, I thought I had left the depression behind but it just seems to creep back on me.

You don't have to have talking therapies to help; you can take medication without having to talk to anyone (apart from telling your GP how you feel). Bottling it all up inside can make things worse in the long run.

i used to sometimes visit \link{http://www.metanoia.org/suicide/this site} if i had no-one to talk to.. used to talk to lots of people online who helped me out

dontask this is a great book that helped me with some serious depression when i was at my worst this book was like a bible

Thanks Don'task, I will get through it have a fantastic support network so it is just a case of riding the storm.

Indigoeyes suggestion of reading a book may help sometimes it can help if you know others ahve felt the same or you understand why you feel like you do.

dontask... you could also do things such as:

make a list of reasons why it is good to LIVE
look at pics of your family/kids/friends
do a timer thing whereby you give yourself 10 minutes and in that time you have to think NICE things. after that 10 minutes do another ten, and another, and another
try and make yourself busy... make some cakes, read a book, go for a walk

I had depression - reasonable severe (to me)I was on medication and it really helped.

I could not even contemplate suicide as my depression centred around how little I could do for my family and by committing suicide I would "create" work for them

I think as someone said it's different for everyone - my medication enabled me to just see out of the hole I was in - and eventually allowed me to climb on somedays......

I found the book a nice thing to carry around with me for the moments when I felt bad like a security blanket. The authour Dr Clare Weekes is amazing and she really understands depression and anxious illness. I really do recommend it.

I did something really daft to get me through the weekend, i arranged to take dd and her friends to the circus. That meant that I couldn't possibly act on my suicidal thoughts because then I would ruin the weekend for everyone else.

Completely daft and lacking in logic but it seems to work for me. I dragged myself out of bed this morning (well early afternoon) and forced myself to do my hair and makeup and take the kids out and felt much better for it.
