Really really crappy. Firstly I am ill again for the 2nd time in as many weeks and secondly, our long awaited, only break this year looks like it isn't going ahead cos we can't get there.

Am just so sick of everything going wrong for us.

Nutty - Whats the issue with the debit card?

nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:17

We are trying to hire a car to travel to blackpool for the weekend and all the places so far require us to have a debit card along with about 1000 things with proff of id on (well ok not 1000).

is there absolutely no way you could afford train tickets or bus tickets nutty

Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:19

I take it you don't have a credit card either? Could you ask someone else if you can give them their card details? I don't think anything will be charged to the card.... Its only in case you do a runner!

....or can't you travel by train??? We travelled to Liverpool by train all the time.

nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:19

TRain is £116, coach is affordable but need a debit card to buy the tickets online and need to buy them online to be able to afford them iykwim.

Incidentally if you pay £20 for a family rail card.... you get 30% of your ticket and 80% off the kids tickets. We used to travel from Glasgow to Liverpool for £43 for 2 adults and a child.

Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:21

Nutty - How many are travelling and where are you travelling from?????

nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:23

2 adult, 2 kids, 1 under 3.

From birmingham at about 9am to blackpool, returning next day at about 3/4 pm.

Didn't know that about the railcard, will check that out now.

Travelling this Friday

Don't know when you're travelling but put in this Friday and returning on Saturday!! £58.80!! Add on £20 for the railcard.... so £78.80 and the railcard is valid for a year!

nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:33

That still too much but thanks for trying anyway

OP posts:
Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:34

But how much will it cost to hire a car and pay the petrol??? The petrol alone will cost you around £40!!!

Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:37

Is it not about £30 a day to hire the car? Come on Nutty, don't give up so easily!

And that price was for a Friday to Saturday... probably the dearest time to travel.

nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:39

Car hire was about £50- £60 from friday morning to monday morning.

Definatly can't afford anymore than that, still have to pay for the room yet.

OP posts:
Toothache · 27/09/2005 11:41

But Nutty.... you have to fill the tank with petrol before you hand it back! That means it would be costing you around £70-80 at least anyway. >confused

NomDePlume · 27/09/2005 11:43

But like toothy says, you have to put petrol in the hire car too, nutty. If you were to go with the family railcard option, how much are you short of being able to afford it ?

nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:44

True

The idea of ds on my lap for 3 hours on a coach or train though isn't apealing i have to admit, but still.

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 27/09/2005 11:44

how much nutty ?

nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:44

I think the family railcard option worked out to about £70 - £80 for all of us.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:45

Got a bit confused so not 100% sure.

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 27/09/2005 11:45

Yes, so how much do you need to be able to make it affordable, if you take into account what you already have put aside for the holiday ?

nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:47

Erm well taking into account the petrol costs for car hire, i suppose we can afford the coach or train.

Question though, I can't book online (no debit card) so if i ring up can we reserve tickets and pay for them on collection or do they not do that ??

OP posts:
nutcracker · 27/09/2005 11:48

Petrol in our own car would have been about £70 so we aren't really spending anymore.

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 27/09/2005 11:48

There's only one way to find out, phone and ask them. Can you use someone elses debit card to book and give them the cash ? Maybe your Dad or brother, or a mate ?
