I've been prescribed Cipralex for my depression and panic attacks despite still bf my 7m dd. The dr said that it would be ok but just wanted to know if this really is the case.

i was prescribed cipralex last year when my dd was 7 weeks old and my particular gp said i had to stop b/f, you might find this of some helpnetdoctor
it does say when i googled it that it shouldnt be used if breastfeeding, did you tell your gp you were b/f? -

Hi spacecadet - yes I did tell her and she said that even though it is contra-indicated this is only because they haven't tested it on bf mothers. She said they would be ok. I bf my dd about 4 times a day now (full feed first thing in the morning and about 3 small top-ups during the day) and dr said to take the pill first thing in the morning before first feed to minimise any effect. I'm worried now.

i was prescribed cipralex too earlier this year.
I contacted the company that makes it and they advised me not to take it as they hadnt tested it on b/feeding mums.
I have taken prozac int he past and seroxat but havent liked either, so i am just struggling on at the moment but finding it hard

bunjies - you can take Cipralex while breastfeeding.

If you look at this link you will see it 4th drug down with it's other name Celexa.

If you look up most medications they will say they are unsuitable for breastfeeding. A common one is Brufen but it is used a lot, especially for mastitis.

This is because drug companies will not do trials in breastfeeding women. Information is gathered later when the drug has been used because the benefit outweighs the small risk. Thomas Hale is a doctor who publishes information about drugs in mothers breastmilk and he is a recognised authority on the subject.

Has you GP also referred you to a counsellor?

romi - you will find that link useful too.

Thank you so much Mears for the link. The GP hasn't referred me for counselling but to be fair I didn't really give her the chance. I'd already discussed mny situation with the hv who recommended seeing the gp so when I had my appt I just got straight to the point and asked for ads. Maybe if I'd been less to the point she would have suggested it. Not sure counselling will really help though. Almost fed up with talking about it IYSWIM.

Hope it works for you bunjies. Breastfeeding can be a calming thing to do so I think it would be best to carry on if you can. The hormonal disruption of stopping feeding can make symptoms worse. Hope you start to feel better soon.
