Are anti-depresseants the answer?

I'v e been feeling quite down for sometime now. It's related to abuse in my past.
Sometimes I feel like a looser and unmotivated and unenthusiastic.

Would a course of antidepressants help me? I'm worried about the side effects.

If you know it is related to abuse in your past have you tried counselling to explore the exact relationship between what happened and how you feel now?

I have had quite a lot of counselling now and quite a bit of it was really hard. But it is paying off and the actually links to what happened have sometimes surprised me and made me feel very different about myself.

Don't really want to put details on here but am glad to share via CAT etc if it helps.

Have you tried some basic stuff like making sure you're eating well, drinking enough, exercising and in a decent sleep routine? These things can really make a difference for some people.

But if you already do these things and still feel like crap then the best bet is to see your GP.

A/D's help some people, but other people don't like them or don't get on with them.

As for side effects, if you were prescribed A/D's you'd have to see what the actual side effects were and make a decision then as to whether the pro's outweight the con's.

Hope you feel better soon.

It's not CBT I mean, I mean proper counselling (sorry not big fan of CBT as sticking plaster on all wounds).

I think you should go talk to your gp.

Anti depressants can be beneficial in conjunction with counselling of some sort.

Anti depressants will only do some of the work but they can keep you on an even level so you will not have severe lows. They can help you to function better so you have the ability to deal with your grief and begin to feel better and cope.

cbt is good and does work, if you have a good therapist they can do counselling and use cbt. It is proper counselling!

ADs will take 2 or 3 weeks to start feeling real effect, your gp may start you on low dose and increase. You should also keep taking them even after you feel well for approx six months then come off them slowly.

Hope you feel better soon
