Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well
b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500
BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.
FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories
miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk
NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE
NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size
SV = Scale Victory
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.
WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

@HLBug also fasting today (after not managing last week...) will have to see how i go though as it's the first time i've booked an exercise class on a FD so if i feel sick i might have to eat something extra!

Welcome @MadMazie - broth sounds like a great idea! Do you take any magnesium? it's meant to be good for sleep and helped my mother in law with night wakes.

I do take magnesium in the evenings but I'm not sure if it much difference to my sleep to be honest. I'm not great at falling asleep at the best of times and fasting seems to make it worse.

MadMazie · 11/05/2026 15:03

I just are my first "meal" of an egg mashed with cottage cheese and hot sauce. It's a lot nicer than it sounds 😂.

I'm taking psyllium husk as a supplement to help manage my cholesterol which I think is helping me to feel less hungry.

Oh I’ve just seen it’s National Eat What You Want Day…..! Not so much for those of us fasting!!

🤣🤣🤣🤣I’ve done the bloody opposite today!

kitchen closing on 610. Unexpectedly working remotely tomorrow which will be HARD. I’m defrosting some lentil soup for lunch and I’ll walk the dog if the hunger pangs get too bad 🤣🙈

Day 2 of B2B and kitchen closing on 686. I’m tired, cold and miserable - had to put my woolly hat on walking home from work as my ears were getting so cold they were sore. Also found out today that I didn’t get selected for a project I’d applied for, so that’s been a bit shitty. Be glad to put today to bed.

harriethoyle · 12/05/2026 19:41

Ugh @HLBug that sounds like a tough day. Well done for not falling face first into cake!

kitchen closing here on 597. Out for lunch with a colleague tomorrow so might try and push through and make it an IF day

I don't think I've got the mental strength to do 3 days!!

I don't think I've got the mental strength to do 3 days!!

Needs must - I am still 2kg above my fighting weight after my MIL's force feeding for 6 weeks in March and April so would really like to have that off within the next month. And BH weekend is also looking lavish...! 😜

Well done @harriethoyle and @MadMazie ! I’m hoping for a protein mini today, as I’m currently steam cleaning the grout on our stone tiles in kitchen and hall, and it’s a huuuggge job!

MadMazie · 17/05/2026 12:49

After waking up stuffed after a dinner party last night I've decided to do my fast day today instead of Monday as planned. Hopefully it will somewhat offset the cheese board I demolished last night.

harriethoyle · 17/05/2026 19:15

Well done @MadMazie i always think weekend fasters have willpower of steel 🤣 I’ve managed an abstinent today booze wise and had poached eggs rather than a fry up this morning but that’s as good as it gets 🙈 will sign in tomorrow for day 1 of my b2b

Honestly I wouldn't normally but I ate so much last night I didn't even feel a pang of hunger til about 4pm so I thought I'd go with it.

Lucylurkery · 18/05/2026 08:31

Hello all, posting again for accountability and support. Had a two weeks off due to holiday and shockingly back up to start weight! In in my head it was only two week but suppose I took my eye off the ball!
Had a horrible wake up call while trying on a new swimming costume, the cellulite on my legs was a so bad - I knew it was not good but dear god was terrible. It’s a shame the the costume is lovely and really suits me ( it’s my legs that are horrible).
it at least prompted me to get on the scales as soon as I got home and I very motivated again. Think there is little hope for my legs but can’t give up.

So back on with a vengeance. Plan is. 5:2 and then more careful on non fast days. More fruit and veg, more excercise ( less walking now my dog passed away) less snack and biscuits.

So thanks for thread, good luck everyone, if anyone any tips for cellulite ( no surgery way to squeamish and can afford) would be grateful.

harriethoyle · 18/05/2026 10:47

Quick on quick off @Lucylurkery hopefully - often post holiday can be a combo of bloat and weight gain so if you have a good week this week you should see some progress.

I'm signing in for day 1 of b2b today - gym session done and mainlining black coffee until an acceptable time to have lunch!

Yes thanks Harriet I like that phrase and hoping is the case! Survived today so far.

HLBug · 18/05/2026 20:36

Couple of big poos will see you right @Lucylurkery - you’ll be feeling more like yourself soon enough.

I’m finishing today on 834 and I’ll be back tomorrow for Day 2 and then probably back for another Mini on Thursday. I’ve got my first quiet weekend for ages ahead of me so I’m going to be virtuous and boring for the next stretch, until a girly weekend away over the bank holiday.

harriethoyle · 19/05/2026 09:08

Signing in for day 2 and joining you for a mini on Thursday @HLBug although I’m at a work course and catering can be distinctly hit and miss!!

Hi @Lucylurkery , after my daughter was born, 25 years ago, I was about a stone overweight and had some cellulite. I bought some MBT trainers (for walking, not for the gym) which were all the rage at the time, as they were meant to tone your legs and burn calories. They change the way you walk. What I found was that not only did my legs tone up - I did plenty of walking every day with the baby in the buggy) - but that my cellulite vanished! I still wear MBTs to this day whenever I go out walking - and still no cellulite! 😊

HLBug · 19/05/2026 18:36

Kitchen closing on 870 so just as well I’ll be back on Thursday!!
