Happy New Year

2026 is going to be a wonderful year of the weight coming off and our bodies glowing with health.

Come and join us!! We’re a friendly group that uses Fasting in one form or another to lose weight or maintain our weight loss. We all have our ups and downs, and welcome insights from others and laughter along the way.... pirates and dachshunds will pop their heads up, we're in awe of those shredding with Jillian and lifting significant weights (beyond our own!) and impressed when we get our steps in.

Fridays are our informal day for weighing-in (optional) and reflecting on the week – often with ideas for self-care and new goals for the coming week.

We cheer each other on, and commiserate when things don't go to plan.
If you’re new to this group, do introduce yourself and share your hopes and plans. Some of us find daily posting helpful for accountability - others just pop in every now and then.

So - how do you want January to look for you? And 2026? We'll look forward to hearing

Can I join? I don't weigh myself often, but sit between 60 - 65kg. I usually exercise regularly (3-6hrs/week). I did really well over Christmas, not overeating and avoided the junk (which I don't enjoy eating anyway), kept up the exercise - felt pretty good!
But since going back to work have felt knackered, run down, and dragging myself through each day. Then comfort eating, and not feeling up to much exercise. So I feel like I have just ballooned out in only a few weeks. Like a PP, I know some of that will go really quickly once I get eating and exercise back on track. 16:8 (approx 11am-7pm) has worked well for me in the past whenever I have needed to reset.
So I'm here for some accountability and motivation! Planning to get the 16:8 going from tomorrow, and add in a half hour walk or home workout each evening once kids are in bed. Can't wait for the days to get longer, that always helps!

JadeVS72 · 16/01/2026 09:27

Welcome @Anotherespressoplease good luck getting back on track 💪
I managed 2 x 500 calorie fast days this week and have lost 0.2kg according to my Friday weigh in which is a little disappointing but my sign to keep going and work harder on the TRE. I have been getting hungry on a morning which I had almost trained myself out of before Christmas.
A non weight related win though- I ordered some marks and spencer size 10 skirts from vinted and they fit me!!! I know m&s size 10 is bigger than other brands but it's a step in the right direction and wouldn't have fitted at the start of this journey in September/October last year.

ProfessorIDareSay · 16/01/2026 09:34

Friday check in:

On Monday 5th Jan I was a shocking 64.3kg, a gain of 3.6kg (over half a stone!) from my pre-Christmas low of 60.7kg.
Friday 12th Jan I was 62.8kg.
This morning I am 62.3kg.

As I mentioned before, 2kg of my gain was, in my opinion, ‘fluff’ that disappears as soon as I start being sensible again. I now need to really dig in and get that 1.6kg off as soon as possible.

I can’t say I am properly back in the groove yet; I am 11 days back on Jillian and finding it tough, but I’m pushing through. The programme I am on doesn’t burn quite as many calories as my previous ones so I am looking forward to changing that up when it finishes at the end of this month. Been good for easing me back in though as it is really only 20 minutes of actual exercises.

My fasting window is far too wooly. I seem to be mostly hitting 14:10 so that needs work.
As to calories, well I am running a deficit on average since the 5th but it is still too small for significant loss; still better than having too many though!

On the whole, I think it is going to take me all of January just to get back into good habits. I know one thing; I won’t be taking a two week break again!

I’m not beating myself up over any of this. It’s all learning, finding out what works and what doesn’t.

@Talkinpeace thank you, you have reminded me to dig out my fruit and herbal teas. I have been ignoring them and forget how much I like them 😊

Sorry to hear things have been emotionally challenging @loveyouradvice and hope things are improving. As you say, you are around your original goal and that’s a good place to be.

Hope your 3 day reset went well @GameOfJones

Welcome @PullingOutHair123 I dug out my old Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred DVD last summer and now use her app almost every day for my workouts. She isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I also hear good things about Caroline Girvan and there are lots of her workouts on YouTube. I’m over 60 and really concentrating on strength and flexibility at the moment in an effort to future proof my body 😁

Hope you are having some luck leaving the garage @StealthSightHound 😉

Brilliant to maintain over Christmas @JadeVS72 (I did not!) and great news on the non-scale victory of size 10 skirts 💪I’m also suffering with hunger in the mornings but I’m sure we will both conquer it eventually!

I hear a lot of good reports on Caroline Girvan @tiredwitless are you enjoying the workouts? Don’t think I’ll ever work through all the Jillain workouts on her app but I’m always interested to hear about other trainers.

Welcome @Anotherespressoplease I look forward to the longer days too and I’ll be glad to see the back of the grey and wet weather. Hang around here, it’s such a lovely supportive thread every month 💝

loveyouradvice · 16/01/2026 11:11

Welcome @Anotherespressoplease I find this thread great for accountability... Wonderful to hear your resolve to start TODAY... come and let us know this evening how it's gone. I'm another who's getting that extra 30 mins walking/dancing done inside of an evening - it helps when the Traitors is on!!

Loving that size 10 M&S skirt @JadeVS72 - a triumph!! And I always think a low loss one week is followed by a higher one the next if your eating is on track... it's somehow as if you need to get your body ti realise you're really serious about it!!

@ProfessorIDareSay - I've found embracing the mindset of its all learning, finding out what works and doesnt work for me is SO liberating - it enables me to almost watch myself from the outside sometimes, and be far more compassionate... and to get back on track faster if things go awry.

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 16/01/2026 11:19

Friday's check in...again, exactly the same as last week (that's three weeks in a row, darn my fluff isn't going like yours @ProfessorIDareSay(and thank you for the sympathetic words, they do make a difference) .. but I have enjoyed a supper with friends, and also unexpectedly ate rather too much chocolate yesterday... I'm finding it tough not to at the moment on days that Im tired and emotional. Focussing on better sleep will help!!

SW: 14.2
CW: 11.3... five pounds up on pre Christmas
GW: 10.11... ideally by end of Jan, but relaxed...

Becoming stronger and more balanced are my 2026 goals, both mentally and physically - I am enjoying focussing more on exercise than food this year, and embracing it... I do believe we have a finite amount of willpower especially on days we are tired, so if I use it all on the exercise that is a powerful choice.

I am expecting to do another Fasting Mimicking Diet (Prolon) next week so will be surprised if that doesn't take me under the 11 stone again.. and then I'll just have the challenge of maintaining that for a while.

Anotherespressoplease · 16/01/2026 19:35

Thank you for the welcome!
Well done on your skirt win, @JadeVS72, that's always a good feeling.
I haven't done a Jillian Michaels workout, but I do love a Caroline Girvan. I'm in awe of the weights she uses though, mine are a fraction of the size!
Keep on in there @loveyouradvice. It's not all about the scale, and gaining fitness through exercise is harder to measure but so worthwhile.
I'm pleased with how day 1 went today - did my 16:8, and was pleasantly surprised not to feel too hungry, and had a productive day at work. Felt less sluggish - looking forward to tomorrow!

loveyouradvice · 17/01/2026 09:56

Looking good @Anotherespressoplease ... once you're in the rhythm it becmes so much easier. Lovely to know you are looking forward to today

And thanks for the exercise encouragement - yes, I've made the choice to focus on this and its what my body really needs, so I need to reassure myself that it's fine if weight loss is now very slow: the triumph is that I've now got a way of eating I love and find deeply satisfying and can maintain my weight relatively easily. And the extra pounds will come off when my body is ready. Need to keep reminding myself of this!!

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 19/01/2026 12:26

Hello all - a new week beckons! How are you hoping to eat - and what self-care is coming in, now January is fully launched.

I'm doing Prolon this week (having picked up 2 in Black Friday sales)... and realising how much I love dancing! Taking on dancing for 15mins a day and looking for gorgeous things to dance to... I'm just about to finish last year's Strictly. Anything on the TV which encourages me to dance is a good call!

OP posts:
ProfessorIDareSay · 19/01/2026 12:47

My current self care seems to be eating every calorie I expend 😬Consequently, some of the Christmas weight is still sticking but at least I am not gaining.

The grey wet weather is getting us all down here, the dogs dislike it as much as I do so our walks are shorter than normal. I am consistent with Jillian though, so that’s something.

Currently not managing to create a deficit but it is what it is and I know I will feel better when the days get longer and we have a few dry days. So for me January is currently about treading water.

Anotherespressoplease · 19/01/2026 20:07

Evening all. Consistency is excellent @ProfessorIDareSay , as is dancing @loveyouradvice! I did a lot more kitchen dancing whilst Strictly was on, and your update reminded me how fun it was, and how much I miss it!
Treading water here too. After a great start, I came down with a rotten cold, and I just can't do fasting at the same time as being ill! I've tried to stay vaguely sensible and still get some walks in, and will resume the 16:8 once I'm feeling better.
Hope you all have a good week.

5humpedcamel · 21/01/2026 06:39

Jumping back on this thread after being knocked sideways by flu. @Anotherespressoplease I'm the same as you- I tend to eat my way through illness, its like I need the energy.
Please to have been back doing 18:6 consistently for a week and a bit now. IT'S WORKING!!!
SW (pre Christmas and flu) 76kg
CW 72.5
GW 64

I'm nailing the fast at the moment but food choices questionable within my window.

Potterwatch89 · 22/01/2026 07:24

Can I join 🙋🏼‍♀️I've been fasting on and off for the last 2 years with not much success as I was unintentionally "dirty" fasting and found it too hard. I read Gin Stephen's fast fest repeat and now been 5:2 clean fasting since Jan 1st with varying fasting Windows on the other 5 days.

SW - 11 stone 9.5
CW - 11 stone 1.5
GW - 10 stone 0

I'm desperate to make it stick this time and hoping having fasting company will help me stay motivated ☺️

loveyouradvice · 23/01/2026 09:37

Treading water is great @ProfessorIDareSay - I keep reminding myself that one of the things we're most needing to learn is how to keep the weight off, to maintain our weight feels far harder than losing it so often!

Congrats @5humpedcamel that looks like a HUGE post Christmas/flu weight loss - 18/6 is my go to too, seems to work much better than 16/8 for me. And then I love to flex on a couple of other days in the week, longer or shorter

Welcome @Potterwatch89 - Good to have you here. I love Gin Stephen's and "Delay, don't deny" is particularly powerful for me, especially when thinking of having another enticing chocolate - it's surprised me how often thinking I can have that tomorrow if I still want it has worked for me. Congrats on the 8lbs down - almost half way to target - how long has that taken you? And what do your 5/2 days look like? Having fasting company really makes a difference to me so hoping it does for you too!!

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 23/01/2026 09:40

Well, the "fluff" has come off - Huge thanks @ProfessorIDareSay for such a great expression for what I used to think of as water weight. I have been doing FMD (Prolon) so that has made it easy - and usually a pound or two comes back on soon after, but with one more fasting day hopefully taking me down by another pound by tomorrow, I'm hoping to report 10.12 next week too.

SW: 14.2
CW: 10.12... five pounds down and back to my pre Christmas weight, phew
GW: 10.11... ideally by end of Jan, but relaxed...

So what are our major challenges this coming week? And what self-care are we adopting midst this deep January gloom?

For me, I've two sociable meals in a row Thurs/Fri next week, both in restaurants so I can choose what to eat, but equally feel tempted by gorgeous things and at risk of dishes being rather different to what they sound like. My resolve now is to choose judiciously: two healthy courses, loads of veg and protein and NO PUDDING, or a spoonful of a mate's if that is offered.

And self-care? I'm enjoying my 15mins dancing a day and am going to keep that up - it gives me a wee lift, a happy moment in the day. And I'm going to reintroduce candlelit baths which I've not done for ages...

OP posts:
Dliplop · 24/01/2026 02:01

Love your advice, how do you find the prolon modified fast for health etc?

I am thinking about doing a DIY version next week. Otherwise trucking along on 5:2. Hit a nice rhythm of porridge or protein shake breakfast then soup twice or thrice. About a pound down from start of January so it’s slow and steady.

Everyone is doing so well at following their goals!

ProfessorIDareSay · 24/01/2026 09:55

Not having a good week here. Skip to end for current status after my long medical grumble which is indeed a major challenge 😄

All going well up until Tuesday; did my normal dog walk/Jillian routine on Monday with no ill effects but by Tuesday I was having pain in my right hip (what I call my ‘good hip’ because it was replaced with a shiny new one a couple of years ago!)

I thought it may be because I am really feeling the arthritic pain in my left hip (the one that still needs replacing) so that may be causing problems with my gait and consequently putting a lot of strain on my right hip. So I just did a gentle flat walk on Tuesday with the dogs and then 20 minutes of yoga. Things went very much downhill after that and I could not bear weight on my right leg without horrible pain; I was concerned I was really doing some damage if I did.

I had already made an appointment (last week) at my GP for next week to discuss my left hip, but Tuesday evening pain in my right hip/leg was so bad I called 111 who told me to go to A&E. Roads were all badly flooded around here so did not fancy doing that trip in the dark and rain (I mean, I wasn’t dying, just in pain) so they said they would get someone medically qualified to call me back. Couple of hours later a paramedic called, did not think it was serious and advised me to see GP next day; he said he would make sure I was on the GP’s call list for the Wednesday morning.

This is when it got a little bit farcical; GP called first thing (when I was in the bathroom!) and left a message that said as I had an appointment next week already, they would just make this a double appointment so I could discuss my left hip in detail! So we were now in the realms of Chinese whispers and confusion of hips, which took two phone calls and 3 receptionists before I managed to make clear what the problem was. The upshot being the practice said ‘come in straight away’, which I did, on crutches (which DH liberated from the attic) and they then sent me to A&E for an xray, concerned my right hip prosthesis may have shifted (it’s rare, but does happen), or that I have a stress fracture. ‘Go now, while it’s quiet’ she said...

6 hours later….
Had an xray, bloods etc. but not seen by an orthopaedic doc, just the junior doc in A&E. He looked at my hip but did not do any poking, prodding, or manipulation, did not check range of movement, nothing. In his opinion xray ‘looked fine’, just go home, rest, take painkillers, come back if it doesn’t settle. White cell count elevated but not concerned by it. I probably should have pushed for a second opinion but I was tired and starving and just wanted to get home.

So here I am, Saturday morning, not any better but pointless worrying about it or doing anything about it as nothing happens in the NHS at weekends anyway.
I’ll call my GP practice first thing Monday if no improvement but I really want that xray looking at by someone better qualified at least.

My first instinct may be right; I may have done some soft tissue damage due to my gait being unbalanced (muscles/ligaments/tendons, who knows). That will get better eventually and I know how to deal with that, but I am not completely reassured that there isn’t bone damage.

Managed to weigh myself and I’m at 61.8kg, just over a kg off my pre-Christmas low, so things were going so well! I’ll have to be really careful now as I have no exercise calories to rely on 🙄

Thank you if you got this far!

loveyouradvice · 24/01/2026 10:06

Oh heavens @ProfessorIDareSay that all sounds so VERY very tough... Im hoping you can be gentle with yourself and get good clear guidance you can trust soon. And fabulous that you're down to just 1kg over Christmas...if you just aim to maintain this during the current challenges you are doing fabulously well. Good luck!

@Dliplop It's so difficult to say how FMD has affected my health - I believe the science and believe it has, but with all my challenges over the last few years have not been able to feel the results. I've just done my 12th round, and am now doing it 4 times a year. Significant is that my LDL cholesterol has come down 49pc while being on it (5.84 to 3.0) - statistically very rare for it to come down so much with weight loss and diet change, so although I have done both of those I do suspect FMD has also helped. Feels rather wonderful that my GP who wanted me on statins is now saying my profile is fab on this front.

2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 24/01/2026 10:11

I’d like to join if possible. I had a tough 2025 where I put on over 10kg. I was quite badly anaemic which led to a complete lack of energy and I completely compensated by stuffing my face with sweet things to give me a temporary boost but it got me into a really bad habit where I was eating 2 or 3 slices of cake a day spread from mid morning to mid afternoon on top of my usual meals.

I work from home and have a ridiculously busy job so spend far too much time sitting down. I don’t have time for lunch most days so as well as cutting out the cake altogether I’ve sort of defaulted to OMAD during the week for the last 2 weeks then 16:8 on the weekend.

it’s been amazing how I haven’t felt any hunger at all - it’s been like a switch in my brain that I just won’t eat cake. The bakery on the school run was my downfall but I haven’t been tempted to go in once.

I’ve lost about 2.5kg over 2 weeks but I am a bit worried about protein. I haven’t explicitly told my DH what I am doing as I don’t think he would be particularly supportive of OMAD but as a result I just eat the same as the rest of the family at dinner, so just a regular piece of meat, veggies, a small portion of carbs and a yoghurt.

Do you have any ideas how I might sneak a bit of extra protein in without anyone noticing?

ProfessorIDareSay · 24/01/2026 10:18

Welcome @2BarbieOrNot2Barbie

Eggs are a great source of protein; could you keep some hard boiled eggs and slices of cold meat such as ham or beef in the fridge to grab as you go past?

loveyouradvice · 24/01/2026 17:20

Very good to have you with us @2BarbieOrNot2Barbie ... agree with @ProfessorIDareSay - hardboiled eggs are my go to if I need a quick bit of extra protein or am going to a conference. And at home, Lindahl do a wonderful cottage cheese that has 25g in a pot: I often eat that with some defrosted raspberries/blackcurrants and a sprinkle of muesli. Yum!! and of course, super quick which is clearly helpful to you at the mo....

My other go to is tinned sardines - I often eat one alongside my breakfast for the extra protein/calcium - but I think this might be seen as somewhat eccentric by many!!

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 24/01/2026 17:22

ps I particularly love the Lindahl as it is lactose free... I discovered that if I had too much dairy, I reacted to it... and it is lovely and creamy too, while being very low fat

OP posts:
2BarbieOrNot2Barbie · 24/01/2026 17:27

Thanks all - like the idea of the cottage cheese with fruit. Might have a look. I also have tinned sardines knocking around and it’s true they are super quick and tasty. Nice to have some ideas! Really hope to get those 10kg off before the summer and think fasting is going to be the way.

@loveyouradvice thanks for having me! I agree, she really speaks to me too as she's just a normal woman who has tried and failed all the fad diets over the years just like me!

I've been ill the last couple of days which has slightly derailed things but I've really tried to keep the fasting up despite that. I've been fasting on and off since October but really fell off the wagon over Christmas and stepped on the scales on January 1st to my highest weight ever of the 11 stone 9.5 so been fasting properly since then. Fast days are one 500 cal meal at midday with a long fast either side.

JadeVS72 · 26/01/2026 18:51

Ooh lots of chat since I was last here 😆
Any news on the hip @ProfessorIDareSay ? I have 2 x prosthetic hips one from 2021 and one from 2023 and worry about doing anything to them!! Because I also have quite bad arthritis in my ankles (and knees) my gait it not good and I get tightness at the front of my right hip that I am constantly trying to stretch.
I'd never heard of FMD but going to do a bit of research- that whole delay rather than denying thing is why I find 5:2 tolerable, because I know I can have whatever treat it is the next day when fasting!! My TRE is not going so well because I get hungrrryyyy on a morning 🥲 and this weekend I had a (thai) meal out with a friend and then a burns night supper at some other friends on Sunday and there were 2 pudding options so I had both. I should have just had a tiny taste of each but didn't want to be awkward so had a full portion of each. Anyway, today was fasting to make up for it!! I have got quite into having a huel lite spaced through the day. It's only 190 kcal but like 25g protein in 500ml so I will have about 1/3 for breakfast around 10:30, some more after lunch then some in the afternoon or after dinner. As it's slightly sweet it stops me craving other sweet things and I add another 300-350 calories across lunch and dinner.
Weighed in on Friday and was slightly down but may have ruined it with my indulgent weekend
