Happy New Year

2026 is going to be a wonderful year of the weight coming off and our bodies glowing with health.

Come and join us!! We’re a friendly group that uses Fasting in one form or another to lose weight or maintain our weight loss. We all have our ups and downs, and welcome insights from others and laughter along the way.... pirates and dachshunds will pop their heads up, we're in awe of those shredding with Jillian and lifting significant weights (beyond our own!) and impressed when we get our steps in.

Fridays are our informal day for weighing-in (optional) and reflecting on the week – often with ideas for self-care and new goals for the coming week.

We cheer each other on, and commiserate when things don't go to plan.
If you’re new to this group, do introduce yourself and share your hopes and plans. Some of us find daily posting helpful for accountability - others just pop in every now and then.

So - how do you want January to look for you? And 2026? We'll look forward to hearing

I think I may also be a good responder to exercise @Clearingaspace
Despite not being tall, I am not what I would call ‘petite’, I’m more stocky than delicate!
I do believe the saying ‘you can’t outrun a bad diet’, but I get much better results when exercising regularly than I do just from dieting; for me, the maths of calories in/out does seem to work. Anyway, we shall see at the end of February when I hope to have turned the Christmas surplus into a deficit and return to losing weight not gaining.

On weight gain, I am a full kg down this morning, so clearly some of that water weight from over indulging has dropped off straight away; I agree @loveyouradvice that the quick gains can be reversed pretty fast if we take action. 2.6kg to get rid of now.

Reflections on Christmas and New Year eating...

I worked hard on losing weight and getting fitter for most of 2025, so I was looking forward to cutting loose over the Christmas break and gave myself two whole weeks to eat whatever I wanted and to take a break from exercise (apart from walking the dogs; they never take a break!)

I did not need two weeks, that’s the first thing I learned. By the end of the two weeks I had had enough and was very happy to get back to ‘normal’ yesterday. For Christmas ’26 I am planning on only 5 days of debauchery 😈
Dec 24th, 25th and 26th, plus Dec 31st and Jan 1st. That will be more than enough.

What did I truly enjoy and what wasn’t worth it?

Drinks:
Didn’t drink a huge amount but very much enjoyed Champagne on its own and a good quality Cava for home made Bucks Fizz/Mimosas. Did not enjoy the supermarket Bucks Fizz, nor most of the various cocktails (a MOTH variety pack). So more money to spend on Champagne next year 🍾

Snacks:
Pork pies, biscuits, shortbread, cakes, puddings; not really for me anymore (I ate them and was underwhelmed) apart from some supermarket own label ginger nuts which are my emergency biscuits of choice throughout the year anyway when I need something sweet, spicy, and crunchy.
DH likes his Christmas cake and pudding, neither of which I care for, so can happily make/buy them for him and they won’t bother me. Same goes for trifle.
Bought waaaay too much cream and the flavoured creams I bought were quite bitter to me; wouldn’t bother again.
Enjoyed some of the crisps, ate too many though, so will buy less next year and only the small bags so that portions are more sensible.
Loved having various pates on sourdough toast, will definitely keep those on the list, especially smoked mackerel, and pork rillettes.

Sweets and chocolate:
Was soooo looking forward to my Lindt santa but actually found it a bit sickly so don’t think I will bother again (ask me in 11 months!) but I am still over fond of After Eights and Maltesers so they stay on the Christmas shopping list.
Bought too much ice cream, so can easily have much less of that; none of it really hit the spot. There is a very expensive one I love from a local gelato maker so one tub of that is going on the list for next year rather than the ones we bought (though DH will still have his Vienetta! He’s a cheap date).

Meals:
Roast dinners, including beef, turkey, and lamb, were all delicious, if over-large! They can easily be incorporated into my diet whenever I want them, just need to up the green veggies and cut down on the roast potatoes, so they are on the year round menu and will stay on the Christmas menu just with extra roasties and side dishes as the pigs in blankets are essential 😍
Toasted sandwiches were another hit, and again there is no reason I can’t have them year round; I had a toasted corned beef and cheese for brunch one morning that completely hit the spot and it was only 400 calories, so easily incorporated into even a restricted calorie day. Also applies to bacon sandwiches.
Same with what we call ‘eggy soldiers’ in our house! If I can get DH to be less liberal with the butter on the soldiers then these are perfectly fine.
Made a couple of delicious pies with various leftovers. Again, small portions with plenty of veggies can be incorporated into my meal plans. I do love a bit of pastry.

I’ve noted all this in my year round meal planning notebook so that I can remember it all in 11 months. It’s funny that some of the foods you really crave are often a let down once you can have as much of them as you want; proof our tastes do change and it pays to take notice of it. I’ll be better prepared next time.

Thank you @StealthSightHound
Getting stuck into the maths isn’t for everyone, but I do love a spreadsheet 😍

I was around the same weight as you this time last year (I was also just under 5’4” in my mid-fifties; I’m now 5’2” in my sixties). I got down to 60.7kg just before Christmas so around 13kg/2 stones lost over the year, with ups and downs along the way.

I think you acknowledging it could take a year or so is very realistic. I would say I have been ‘on plan’ around 85% of the time, not perfect by any means but it did the job.
Finding exercise I enjoy has been key for me, as I don’t just want to be slimmer, I want to be stronger and fitter to protect myself as I age.

I want to get down to 57kg I think, then see how I feel. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to be a little bit heavier than we were in our twenties (my mum calls it ‘hospital weight’, what you can stand to lose if you are ill for a while iyswim).

I’m certain I would not have made this progress without the encouragement on this thread (and the 30 Day Shred thread elsewhere) and I think sticking to an ‘eating window’ is key so you are on the right track.

Noting what works and what didn’t is a useful thing at all times of the year, but particularly at Christmas as I know I will forget if I don’t! Your ‘diplomatic suggestion' reminder is a great idea.

Hello all, can I join you please?

I have been following 16:8 (or sometimes 18:6) since July 2024 and have found it transformative. That, plus six months on Mounjaro last year brought my weight down from 15st 1lb to 10st 7lbs. I stopped taking Mounjaro in September but have continued IF as that's a way of life for me now.

I found Christmas tricky. More snacks and alcohol than I would usually have and I put on 4lbs.

I'm now on day one of a three day liquid diet. I don't like the word "cleanse" but I felt like I needed a mental and physical reset and to draw a line under the excess of Christmas and New Year. I want to quickly get back to fighting weight (so 10st 7lbs or under) as I know from past experience I can tell myself it's only a few lbs and then suddenly that becomes the new baseline and my weight creeps up and up.

So today, tomorrow and Thursday I'm sticking to nourishing liquids only and keeping to a 12pm-6pm pattern. Mainly vegetable juices, fruit juices, bone broth, miso soup and kefir. I'm interested to see how it goes, it's a bit of a self-imposed experiment but I already feel better for starting afresh.

@ProfessorIDareSay if you like After Eights have you ever tried them frozen? You can just put the box in the freezer and can take out how many you need. I tend to have three frozen After Eights as my dessert on a Saturday evening.... it's become a bit of an addiction but one I really look forward to 🤣

Thank you! I hope it is the case for you also. I'm lucky really that I found 16:8 very easy almost from the first day. The hardest switch for me personally was swapping from lattes to black coffee in the mornings but even that I developed a taste for within the first week or two.

I think it has killed my sugar addiction. I will now have a small dessert once a week but considering I used to have biscuits and chocolate almost daily that's been remarkable.

2024 and 2025 were about losing my excess weight. Now I'm at a healthy BMI I really want to focus this year on more whole foods and limiting UPFs. My diet has improved a lot from what it used to be but there's still work to do on that front.

ProfessorIDareSay · 06/01/2026 16:56

Welcome @GameOfJones !

I have added your After Eight suggestion to my meal planner for next Christmas, sounds lush!

Hello. My name is PullingOutHair, and I need to lose some excess weight...

To lose 2 stone this year would be amazing. I have an event at the start of July it will be great to have lost a stone for - which I guess is about right for losing 2 stone over the course of the year.

I'm over 50, so won't be as "easy" as it has been in the past - but the weight has to shift! I am going back to 16:8 that I have used successfully in the past. Works mostly with family life. Posting here I hope will keep accountable!

I do a fair amount of dog walking, but thinking I need something to get the heart rate properly going, and to attempt to tone the arms. Any recommendations for youtube or similar for home exercise? Think I still have a an old video somewhere - but the video player has definitely long since gone 😂

GameOfJones · 07/01/2026 11:47

@StealthSightHound I really tried with tea to drink it black but I just can't. It was bringing me no joy whatsoever. So I will now have a cup of tea in my eating window (with milk.)

Honestly if I can give up the lattes anyone can because I made one every single morning first thing. It was a bit of trial and error for me to find a black coffee I didn't mind. Freshly ground or made in a french press were too strong for me at first so I actually tried a few instant coffees and found I didn't mind the Clipper organic one drunk black. I still often have it but now I'm used to drinking my coffee black I can happily order an Americano without milk in a café or make one at home. Taste buds definitely can adjust if you give it some time!

ProfessorIDareSay · 09/01/2026 08:40

Quick post to log weight, will catch up properly later:

Having braved the scales on Monday to see a shocking 64.3kg, a gain of 3.6kg (half a stone!) from my pre-Christmas low of 60.7kg, I am now at 62.8kg

Talkinpeace · 09/01/2026 13:49

Re Tea :
I have always had white tea on fast days
but to improve my sleep I now have herbal teas (particularly the lemon ginger and turmeric varieties) after 5pm

loveyouradvice · 09/01/2026 18:59

Mmmmmm.... love ginger tea @Talkinpeace and friend introduced me to the Pukka 3 Gingers at Christmas... Im in heaven: love it!!! Makes fasting so much easier.

Good to have so many back on here! Welcome back @StealthSightHound and loving that you create Christmas as YOU want it now, that is So great- and welcome @PullingOutHair123 great to have you with us.

Good to have you back too @GameOfJones - and I'm another who is going to be popping my After 8's in the freeze... what a fab idea!! How brilliant that you are combining Mountjaro and IF to create your new body and approach to eating... how did u find Montjaro? Any side effects??

Loving the exercise debate - it is the ONE thing I am really focussed on this year - some exercise daily and I've splashed out for the first time ever and got a lovely personal trainer as a Christmas present to myself....Yes, I

What great analysis @ProfessorIDareSay, and how brilliant to be celebrating 2 stone off - isn't it fascinating how our tastes change? I confess I have had those mini Lindt reindeer as the occasional treat... and the mini size really works for me because yes, more would now be too sweet!! And well done on getting that first kg and a bit off since Christmas

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 09/01/2026 19:11

so.... I am watching myself carefully, observing and reflecting.....Reminding myself that exercise is my priority for 2026 and that making conscious choices is also a muscle Im building...

As you know, I had a hugely successful Christmas and was back to pre Christmas weight two days later - revelling in relishing small quantities of almost everything indulgent, apart from my crispy ducky skin which I wolfed down!! So I learnt a lot from that... I can do it, and really enjoy it, and in fact enjoy it far far more than "letting my body go" or entering a Christmas over-indulgent fug. A real revelation. And so liberating, not thinking about food all the time.

And then since: Yes, I'm going to rival you on emotional eating as my specialist subject @StealthSightHound .... Deeply emotionally challenging time, including grief, these last 10 days or so and my weight has soared... I have overeaten, sometimes quite significantly (like wolfing down every canapé that passed me at a birthday party)... but at other times more consciously, choosing to wolf down half a large box of Maltesers as healthier than choosing other Christmas chocs, having a large bowl of yogourt, granola and mango in addition to full meals one day... not running for the crisps, cheese straws, icecream as I would have in the past...

So clearly it is a little red wolf on my left shoulder rather than the wee red devil I had imagined... or are they in cahoots?

Hmm... I am progressing, Im learning a new way of eating and am just not there yet!

So I'm not weighing in for Friday weigh-in today but going to do so tomorrow morning, after a more balanced eating day today. I'll then create a plan for the next 10 days and see where I get to in relation to my pre Christmas weight. I feel a little regretful that I am back in this place, but also proud with what I've achieved in this last year and that this is all part of the journey.

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 11/01/2026 10:36

Friday's check in on Sunday... feeling all too familiar, one step forward, one step back... hopeful that from tomorrow morning I can have a clean eating week...

Exactly the same as last week... fortunately...
SW: 14.2
CW: 11.3... five pounds up on pre Christmas but 1lb down
GW: 10.11... ideally by end of Jan, but relaxed...

And a gentle reassuring reminder to self that 11.2 was my original goal, so I am fine where I am ...it is a good place to be

OP posts:
JadeVS72 · 11/01/2026 11:15

I did my weigh in on Friday so to report
SW 77.4kg
CW 70.2kg (kinda maintaining over christmas)
TW 63kg

I have been a bit stressed with work and restarting after the break (performance review time urgh) and struggled to find 2 days a week to fast with evening hobbies and other plans. Been managing 6:1 which seems to be maintenance for me. I did a fast (500) day on Thursday and am trying today too. I do need to improve my 'normal' eating days to make them healthier- I have nibbled on biscuits and chocolate and not been as generally mindful as I would like with calories e.g. the other day as part of lunch I ate some healthyish crackers with aivar but ate quite a lot of them and kicked myself for just keeping on going.
Sorry to hear about other stressful times! The weather and season definitely does not help either.

I am doing well with black coffee in the morning, however still getting hungry before lunch and when working need to start eating at 10, when I would prefer 12!

I also need to move my body more this year but a chronic joint disease makes it hard/painful. I have a good pt who I see weekly and do a weekly exercise class as well. Need to increase!

tiredwitless · 11/01/2026 21:24

Current weight 11.12 not great, 5lb up on beginning of December and have not really got back on track yet. Eating Christmas cheese - finally threw out the last of it today. Also ate some Christmas cake today..oh dear. There’s quite a lot of it left. I think I may have to throw it out.. seems like such a waste.
On the positive side I have done ok with fasting this last week - 16 hours or longer fast each day. I also downloaded and subscribed to the Caroline Girvan app and did the first ultimate beginners session. I had to find (retrieve from daughter’s bedroom) my weights and identify a space to do it.. but now that I’ve done that, and figured out what workout clothes I have, it will be easier to do the next one.
Thanks all for sharing the good and the bad - it helps to know others struggle with emotional eating too. I hope this is a better week ahead for those of us finding it hard to haul ourselves back on track .. even though it’s still January and the weathers still miserable. I’m doing another CG session on Tuesday morning. Now that I’ve said it it has to happen! Have a good week everyone

loveyouradvice · 12/01/2026 12:01

I think anyone who maintains over Christmas is doing amazing @JadeVS72 .. and sounds like you have great plans for next steps

Congrats on Caroline Girvan @tiredwitless - Ill look forward to hearing more - I've been thinking of signing up... And you and I are twins: 5lbs of Christmas weight to persuade to go away!!

I have some smart scales and really like them. I know they aren’t entirely accurate on things like fat and muscle percentages but for me the important thing is they show the trends. They connect to an app which I find invaluable as it is not uncommon for me to weigh myself then have forgotten the number by the time I get downstairs 😄

They were fairly cheap from Lidl iirc, the app is called Fitdays. I look forward to the day when they no longer call me ‘slightly fat’!

loveyouradvice · 12/01/2026 13:43

I wonder who thought up that messaging @ProfessorIDareSay - I suspect they meant it to be gentle but slightly fat almost feels like an insult!! Somehow overweight feels less pejorative...

OP posts:
Talkinpeace · 13/01/2026 13:17

I have bought some smart scales from Argos for under £20
I compare the readings with my old ones from the Boditrax machine at my gym.

Its lean body weight is accurate to within .5kg
Its muscle figures are a bit low, but reasonable.
Takes 5 seconds to get a reading and is holding me to account.
