Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

Making myself accountable by telling you that I'm 15 hrs into a 38 hr fast. I'm my own worst enemy, as soon as I fail at something once, in this case my 1st planned longer fast this week, it's almost like I've given myself permission to fail again.

MasterOfOne · 17/03/2021 10:28

@StuntNun Yes the salt was the trick - it's not completely gone but def eased up on intensity!

@Oneborneverydecade you've got this! I am looking into longer fasts April onwards, need to make sure I am committed on this journey! Like you, if I fall off the wagon, I feel like "oh well might as well keep going" and really self sabotage!
Well done you xx

StuntNun · 17/03/2021 10:53

Good luck with it Oneborn. I'm hoping to get back into longer fasts now my iron levels are coming back up. This week I'll do a couple of shorter fasts, maybe 21 hours as it fits in around work and family meal times. My DH starts to get antsy when I'm not having dinners. I think he assumes I'm going to get hangry and freak out.

@MasterOfOne I often have a hot mug of bovril at least once per day when I’m fasting. Obviously it’s not to everyone’s taste but the salt content helps, & the calories are so low that apparently it doesn’t really affect a fast. Plus, hot & tasty.

MasterOfOne · 17/03/2021 11:45

Thanks @AnExcellentWalker I'll add it to the shopping list.

Putting 1/4 teaspoon of salt in my tea has really taken the edge off the headache and can't taste it like in plain water!

Oneborneverydecade · 17/03/2021 16:31

Thank you @StuntNun and @MasterOfOne had a bit of a wobble earlier but I've stuck with it.

I'm glad your iron levels are improving stunt I've been anaemic during pregnancy before and it's really debilitating isn't it

StuntNun · 17/03/2021 19:50

How many hours are you in now Oneborn? I really like the Life fasting app for keeping myself on track.

26 and just back from a C25K with DH. I'm only in week 3 but it felt noticeably easier than yesterday. Is there science to explain why it might be easier to exercise on a FD? I'm not sure if it's imagined or not but I'm not complaining

Oneborneverydecade · 17/03/2021 20:50

And yes to the LIFE app. I've been using it since Aug when I first saw you recommend it Halo

MasterOfOne · 18/03/2021 09:54

Nearly 16hrs into my first 22hr fast and really starting to struggle. Also started period today so maybe that's why I am feeling so very hungry?

StuntNun · 18/03/2021 10:50

MasterOfOne try having a cup of tea or coffee or decaf. That often staves off hunger pangs. If you still feel hungry in 20 minutes or so then maybe it's time to end the fast early. Some people like to have bone broth / stock / Bovril to get through a longer fast. Jason Fung permits coffee with cream or butter or coconut oil to keep you going.

I'm always more hungry on the 1st day or two and it's always cake that I crave. Bloomin hormones.
Well done whatever you decide to do

MasterOfOne · 18/03/2021 11:33

The craving for cake/ sugar is unreal! So have had a cup of tea with some salt and drinking more water and feel OK for now.

I have a big meeting from 2 - 4pm that will take me to my 22hr so I know I can do this.

It's mind over matter (or tummy!) Lol

MasterOfOne · 18/03/2021 16:22

Scraped through 22hrs - really struggled to maintain focus in that last meeting, so think I'll stick to 18-20hrs for now Grin

Betbloom · 18/03/2021 20:10

Hello all. I've been following this thread with interest as I'm doing 16 to 20ish hr fasts in the last couple weeks. Weekdays and eating light in the weekends but no fasting. Lowish carb most days but have a guilty carb dinner one day of the fasts (my excuse is to confuse my metabolism). Lost about 0.5 kg per week. Have two questions
A) do you think what I'm doing is sensible? B) is 0.5 kg per week ok or do most people lose more? C) an embarrassing one... Has anyone experienced ehem... Bad bowel movements when they started this kind of dieting? (sorry! Blush)

Oneborneverydecade · 18/03/2021 20:27

Hello @Betbloom
When you say eating light, are you eating mostly low carb high fat? If yes then I don't think there's any problem following 16:8 or 20:4 during the week. I can't really comment on the one carby meal as I haven't done that. I think you risk knocking yourself out of ketosis and having to restart though maybe.
You don't say how much you have to lose but obviously that will affect the rate at which you lose. I don't think it really matters how quickly others lose if what you're doing is sustainable and enjoyable to you.
I don't go to the toilet as frequently but no diarrhoea. Hopefully @StuntNun will be along with some advice soon

StuntNun · 18/03/2021 20:36

Betbloom fasting can contribute to stomach upsets. What kind of problems are you experiencing.

Betbloom · 18/03/2021 20:48

Thank you so much for your responses (also to the embarrassing question!) @oneborneverydecade yes also low carb in the weekend, though this probably means

StuntNun · 18/03/2021 21:50

It's quite common to have diarrhoea when breaking a fast.

OP posts:
venusandmars · 18/03/2021 21:55

@Betbloom you say Lowish carb most days but have a guilty carb dinner one day of the fasts

Why 'guilty'?

Each of us need to work out a way of eating that works for us. Whether that is 100% keto, or an easier low-carb / high-fat regime, or 5:2 (day) fasting, or 16:8 (hour) fasting, or OMAD, or carb cycling... or whatever.

And when we find what works, for our ultimate health goals - whether that is weight loss, or muscle build, or reduction in insulin resistance, or lowered blood pressure, or less painful periods - why would we feel guilty about following that programme?

StuntNun · 19/03/2021 06:11

When I first started maintenance I did a "cheat" meal every two weeks at first. It wouldn't be something really carby or sugary. More like a small amount of rice with a curry, or a jacket potato. If you can fit it into your lifestyle without causing weight gain or triggering hunger/cravings then it's perfectly fine. There used to be talk about an 80/20 rule that if you followed your diet 80% of the time then you could relax the other 20% of the time. I don't think that really works in practice but a 90/10 or 95/5 rule can work. If you're trying to lose weight then it will probably affect your rate of weight loss, however carb cycling can work for some people, especially if you're either very physically active or you're still metabolically flexible. My DH can happily have a burger and a couple of beers one day and then get straight back to low carb. I can't do that easily as it details me and I end up hungry the next day. We both have very different relationships with food though.

Over time I stopped having the cheat meal because I didn't really need it. I think initially after focussing on weight loss for five months I wanted to have the "treats" that I hadn't had for so long. But ultimately I didn't really miss them that much after all so they weren't treats any more. Give me some lovely crispy pork belly and courgettes fried in butter over a lousy baked potato any day! And, at the end of the day, those foods are all still available if I want them. Just because I don't eat them regularly any more doesn't mean I can't have them whenever I want. It's one reason why the Low Carb Bootcamp encourages stopping all sweet foods, not just sugar-sweetened foods. You really do lose your taste for them over time.

Morning All and happy Friday 😊

poorbuthappy · 19/03/2021 09:16

Morning all

Am checking in.
Can feel me slipping off low carb and fasting and need accountability to get back on the horse.

So 24 hour fast today (actually from 5pm yesterday) all the water in the world to get my head back in the game.

I've become complacent.

Anyone else doing it today?

Oneborneverydecade · 19/03/2021 09:35

I'm aiming for 36ish hours @poorbuthappy starting yesterday evening. No movement on the scales for me this week which is definitely carb creep.
What's causing you to slip do you think?

poorbuthappy · 19/03/2021 10:09

@Oneborneverydecade - just a general end of tether thing I think.
And complacency - had a few glasses of wine over the past few weeks and didn't put anything on so slipped back into past bad habits.
Need a reboot!
