Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

No stunt only came on me today, need to do an online consultation for tomorrow to get antibiotics Sad

I'm really not looking forward to next week, schools are back and it will be mental in work! I might get a few inadvertent fasts in with no bloody time to eat!!

Hope your week goes well and your little one stays in the school!!

StuntNun · 01/03/2021 21:33

Try and get sorted as soon as you can ZiggZagg so the antibiotics kick on ASAP.

Bestbees my DH still eats with the kids so it's not much of an issue. We don't always eat with them anyway because they'll have a carby meal and we'll have something different. They know I'm fasting and have a vague notion of why.

Thank you for the long reply @stuntnun it's v interesting and I've reread it several times.
I fasted for 38.5 hours, had some Greek yoghurt and berries just now. Yesterday I was feeling like I didn't want to do it again tomorrow.
I decided to start my Cto5K today rather than yesterday on a FD although I did do Jillian M.
Fell down a Reddit rabbithole yesterday - there seems to be a trend for 40 day water fasts, including 1 morbidly obese guy and 1 teeny tiny woman. Just seems risky without supervision

StuntNun · 03/03/2021 09:19

Who's fasting at the moment? I did 24-hours on Monday but didn't feel up to an extended fast this week.

Thank you for this great post @StuntNun. I am a newbie of fasting. I think I will start from 16:8.

StuntNun · 03/03/2021 10:30

Welcome Start. You can even start with 12 or 14 hours and work your way up to 16 hours. Fasting gets easier every time you do it.

I ended up fasting for 23 hours yesterday. Trying to break my snacking habit (even if they are HFLC snacks Blush).

The fact that I can do the fasts easily demonstrates that I'm not eating the snacks out of hunger - the main rule of HFLC Boot Camp Shock

Note that I'm admitting this on here rather than on the current Boot Camp thread to avoid BIWI's Big Stick Grin

AnExcellentWalker · 03/03/2021 10:55

Trigger warning - don't read if you're emetophobic.

I'm fasting at the moment. Not just water, it has to be said, I've had 2 mugs of hot bovril yesterday, & I'm just having a coffee with a splash of cream, neither of which kick you out of ketosis apparently. Approaching 40 hours. TBH it's partly because I've had a bastard of a migraine for the last couple of days, & the side effects are less traumatic if I've just had liquid. Absolutely zero desire to eat, nothing tastes right when I have a migraine anyway. Hopefully it will go off by this evening.

CeibaTree · 03/03/2021 11:11

Hope everyone is having a good week. I'm in awe of all of your longer fasts, I find I am counting down the minutes to 16 hours! I've been doing 16:8 and low carbing seriously for a few weeks now since then I am finding I am getting really cold fingers - could this be anything to do with low carb fasting, or just a co-incidence? I don't remember this happening before when I've stuck to this woe..

StuntNun · 03/03/2021 11:31

I don't know Prettybird. I don't get any urge to eat snacks when I'm fasting but I will on other days unless I eat a particularly big lunch. If I eat breakfast any day then I'll end up snacking all day.

I hope your migraine improves AnExcellentWalker it sounds horrible.

CeibaTree it does take a bit of time to get into the swing of fasting but it should get easier every time. Cold fingers can happen as a result of intermittent fasting. Although I get cold all over, especially after a couple of days! Fasting also lowers your blood glucose level which can make you more sensitive to cold than usual. If you're feeling cold all the time, even when not fasting, then that can be a sign of hypothyroid which is sometimes exacerbated by eating a low carb diet. The solution to that is to eat a somewhat higher carb diet or have a carb refeed every week or two.

I've got a bit of an uneven week workwise, so fasting tomorrow (just 23 hours). I find it so much easier if I can get out of the house for a couple of hours at lunchtime. It breaks that '12 o'clock it must be lunchtime' thinking. And it avoids me having to smell dh's lunch cooking.

Today the house is full of the aroma of ham and lentil soup (using up all the carby things for dh's lunch) and the occasional almost irresistible waft of warm toast. Just as well I have smoked salmon and cream cheese for my lunch!

CeibaTree · 03/03/2021 11:53

Thanks @StuntNun I do have Hashimoto's but had my TSH checked last week and it is fine. It's just my fingers so I can live with that with fingerless gloves :) I feel so much healthier and full of energy when I do this woe that cold fingers are a small price to pay!

Oneborneverydecade · 03/03/2021 13:11

I'm 18 hours into my 2nd 40 hour fast of the week. Feeling strong, even in the face of helping DD eat her quesadilla and sponge cake. I've started reading Dr Fung's Complete Guide to Fasting - I really struggled with The Obesity Code, it just wouldn't go in.
I concur with what stuntnun said about snacking, if I eat breakfast I'm snacky all day

InsanityRocks · 03/03/2021 15:01

I finished a 48 hour fast last night. I was going to do a 16 hour fast today but I'm at 18 hours and think I'll probably go for 21-22 now as I find it easier to work on an empty stomach. The 48 hour fast was ok, oddly I found it harder at the beginning.

rockingaroundthemulberrybush · 03/03/2021 18:30

Well done everyone! I'm only 5 hours into a 24 hours fast (which I do on the same 24 hours once a week) . I just need to get through this evening. Sleep then the morning is the easy bit - I'm used to fasting until lunchtime! I'm hungry now though, need to glug some water and distract myself from thinking about rice fecking crispies! I'm shattered so might have an early night.

I haven't got a good plan for lunch tomorrow so need to sort that out too. I've got ingredients but everything I had planned seems to need a lot of baking and cooking and I'm so strung out by everything else just now (busy at work, home schooling, mad preschooler) that I wish I had something easy to grab tomorrow lunchtime.

PeacheyPeach · 03/03/2021 18:42

It has improved, thanks @StuntNun. Probably fine by morning I think. I managed 47 hours in the end, mainly because I’d stopped feeling sick & started feeling hungry TBH. Not going to fast tomorrow, just going to try to keep low-ish calorie, & low carb. Will probably go for a walk though, I’ve been in bed for the last 2.5 days.

@PeacheyPeach that sounds lovely!

@InsanityRocks I often find the first 12-15 hours much harder. After about 18 hours I’m pretty much over it TBH. I thought doing more than a day would be really hard but it hasn’t been, I’m definitely doing it again when I’m feeling well. No specific goal though, regarding length, I’ll just see how it goes I think.

If I’m doing OMAD I can do either lunch or tea but it would never be breakfast. All wrong somehow. (!)

CrabPuff · 03/03/2021 22:58

23 hours today and 402 calories. I fasted on Monday too but not “clean”.

Will try to skip breakfast tomorrow and eat enough lunch to not want an evening meal. I totted up the calories for a solid hot chocolate (Cadbury’s drinking choc, whole milk and mini marshmallows) the other day and it’s nearly 300. Annoyingly much more than a small glass of wine and I like to give the liver a break on occasion so I feel annoyed by that!

I have a solid weekend of eating planned so just need to lay off the food as much as poss before Saturday and Sunday so I can relax.

36 hour fast definitely planned for Monday too.
Everyone is doing well!

CrabPuff · 03/03/2021 23:00

I have to say I feel SO pleased going up to bed on the evening of a 36 hour fast. Once you’re safely in bed, the rest is easy and waking up the next morning is also brilliant.

Bufferingkisses · 04/03/2021 08:20

Well my restart seems to be going well, doing 20/4 and keeping the carbs under 50. Sleep has improved, not getting hunger pangs and have dropped another 3lbs Smile also I feel "cleaner" - internally, presumably a digestive thing?

I'm wondering about mixing it up a bit and dropping a short fast at the weekend followed by a 36 hour stint. Is it advisable not to get too locked in to a regime/set of times?

Oneborneverydecade · 04/03/2021 09:22

@CrabPuff I agree, if I can get to bedtime the last 10 hours of a 38 hour fast are a breeze. Although I've noticed I'm not sleeping as well.

I'm 3lb down so far after my 2 38 hour fasts. 1 more to go - not thrilled by the prospect

Oneborneverydecade · 04/03/2021 09:23

@Bufferingkisses stuntnun has posted before that it's a good idea to mix things up

Bufferingkisses · 04/03/2021 12:08

Yes, I did see that, I was sort of asking for a bit more detail on it/thoughts if my idea would work for that really. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I'm afraid I am totally new so trying to learn as I go without making too many mistakes, I had thought this thread was aimed at those new to it as well as established. Maybe I read it wrong.

StuntNun · 04/03/2021 12:49

Yes Buffering I think your plan is a good one.
