BSD and Fast800 support thread #17

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2020 10:51

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Thank you @Kimlek
I have been buying a spicy beans pot from m and s but it’s expensive . That sounds great , thanks

VenusInfers · 22/01/2020 22:37

Hi everyone!
I've been on and off this thread a couple of times in the last year. I got to my dream weight in time of the work Xmas party, but in the month since i have put several lbs back on. Some over Christmas itself and then an extra 1 or 2 on a catered skiing holiday.
So all good fun, but time to get back to where I should be.

Day 1 today - Apple and cheese for breakfast, salad with boiled eggs for lunch and a mushroom & bean concoction for dinner plus a bit of peanut butter. How I love peanut butter!

It's been great catching up with everyone's progress in this thread, some impressive determination on show & some great numbers too

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/01/2020 06:44

@Pajamagirl I bought some spicy refried beans in Tesco in a pouch (like the uncle bens rice rye pouches), they were £2 for the packet but the pack will do 2-3 serves. Quick scan of the ingredients suggests they are ok for a quick lunch, no added sugar.

@VenusInfers welcome back. I love peanut butter too. I don't buy it any more because it's too delicious and I just eat it.

I've gained half a pound this morning. I'm due on in 3 days and I'm suffering with a fair bit of water retention so I'm not too worried really but it's still annoying.

Today I'm working this morning, baking this afternoon, working this evening....hopefully can keep my carbs low and shift some of this water. I'm not running as I always rest a few days after my massage but I'm going to do a kettlebell workout and also find and begin a workout for Diastasis recti because when I had my tummy treatment this week she told me that I actually still have separation on my abdominals that hasn't healed after 4.5 years! So will begin a YouTube programme to see if I can pull them back together.

Have a great day everyone! Smile

Morning all!

I am another 1lb off, which makes me definitely a Stone off since January 2. I am picking up my teenager today, who hasn't seen me in three weeks. Will see if she notices 😁

I wish I could get rid of this cold 😔 And especially the cough. None of my Chinese clients are going to want me coughing over them with the current health scare...

CaptainBrickbeard · 23/01/2020 07:18

High five to Fluffy; half a pound finally crept off me this morning and I can now say I too have lost a stone since 2nd January! Hooray!

FluffyEarMuffs · 23/01/2020 07:22

@CaptainBrickbeard high five ✋🏻 👏🏻

A stone is a great milestone!

Pajamagirl · 23/01/2020 07:27

Well done @CaptainBrickbeard
That last bit to get to the stone has been agony for you well done on keeping going

Pajamagirl · 23/01/2020 07:29

and Well done to @FluffyEarMuffs great result

FluffyEarMuffs · 23/01/2020 07:32

I am looking at my weigh in stats, and I agree with everyone who says week 3 is an issue. Anyone reading this in week 3, stick it out a few days and don't give up!

CaptainBrickbeard · 23/01/2020 07:43

Yes, Pyjama I did bitch about it a lot! I hope week 3 was just a bit of an anomaly and that week 4 is much better for us all!

PhoenixMama · 23/01/2020 08:05

Yay Captain & Fluffy! Well done! That's brilliant progress! And week 3 is a total beotch, we've all been there! Hate to say it's a regular thing that there's 1 week a month that totally stalls but if you stick with it it goes eventually!

I have no idea what my body is doing - awful day yesterday, at loads of bread but I'm a pound down this morning & back to my lowest. Trick now is to break this plateau where I've been for MONTHS! That's my entire goal for the next two weeks - just break this plateau and stay below it for a couple of days!

VenusInfers · 23/01/2020 08:13

Congrats Captain and Fluffy! Amazing results!

Hellsbells0509 · 23/01/2020 09:43

Thanks for the welcome!

I'm 11 days in and weighing 8lbs off so far. It's encouraging to see losses like this so fast! I'd like to lose 2 st over the 8 weeks - a bit more if I am able!

I've tried Atkins/Keto before and lost a bit of weight but not managed to stick to it and I did a stint Sept - Christmas of no sugar, no pasta, no alcohol, no bread but only lost 4 lbs over the whole 90 days! I had an MOT at the drs and nothing else going on so I'm assuming it has to be portion size that's scuppering me - hence doing the 800 cals BSD.

Glad to be doing it alongside other mums with similar goals!

Pajamagirl · 23/01/2020 14:32

2lb down
I have been on this thread a while and every time I get motivated I have been ill and then put it back on .. so basically I have maintained since mid Dec
So .. back on it , have a trip to London end feb so would like to hit a stone or so down by then
13 5 today hope to be 12 by then

Riddleofthesands · 23/01/2020 15:49

Well done Fluffy and Captain!

Lunch was a small bowl of saurkraut mixed with a spoon of crunchy peanut butter. Dinner will be lentils, spinach, onions and mushrooms with a little left over chicken.

I have moved my bra strap onto a tighter clip and feel less fat. Saturday morning is my weigh in day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/01/2020 16:20

@Riddleofthesands
Sauerkraut? Yum. Peanut butter? Yum...,but together??? Is this something I need in my life?

OP posts:
Kimlek · 23/01/2020 16:49

Crikey ladies! A stone since 2nd Jan is fabulous!
Are you sauerkraut eater making your own or buying in & from where? Think I may try it!
Fasted til midday which was pretty good given I ate at 5pm yesterday! But I was very hungry so had a 600 cal lunch of tuna patties, a whole courgette, half pepper stir fried with a huge chunk of feta! And I’m hungry already...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/01/2020 17:06

@Kimlek I buy it from Tesco polish section but it's pasteurised so it doesn't actually help the gut bacteria. I have made my own before and that was nicer but it's a long process of waiting. I keep meaning to do another batch

OP posts:
Riddleofthesands · 23/01/2020 17:12

Hi Bear and Kimlek, the sauerkraut is in a big jar, brand name Hengstenberg. I find the sauerkraut cuts through the claggy peanut butter in a very happy way. I just tried it out one day Smile. I think Bear has made it from scratch before.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/01/2020 17:34

@Riddleofthesands part of me wants to try it, part of me feels wrong for even considering it....

TheForgetfulCat · 23/01/2020 18:01

Waving goodbye as tonight is DHs birthday meal, tomorrow is his actual birthday and Saturday is my brothers wedding ... so I'm treating it as a sort of impromptu 5:2 and intending to jump back on the wagon and undo the damage come Sunday. See you then!

FluffyEarMuffs · 23/01/2020 18:03

@Kimlek they also sell it in Sainsbury's, Although I had to search for it.

I have not eaten yet today. I bought some fish from the supermarket, but I won't be home with the children for hours 😔 I might be past it by then.

Pajamagirl · 23/01/2020 20:44

Hone made mushroom soup simmering away , smells amazing
Some will be frozen and a portion fir lunch tomorrow

Kimlek · 23/01/2020 20:46

Enjoy the celebrations forgetfulcat
I’ll have a search for the sauerkraut fluffyears and riddle albeit I’m not sure what I’ll eat it with.
I’m closing the kitchen at 1010 cals today as after a hefty 600 cal lunch had a 410 dinner of chicken korma, green beans and cauli rice. Carbs are 42g so not too bad. I’m finally not hungry nor cold!

Kimlek · 23/01/2020 20:47

What’s in you soup pajama? I have lots of mushrooms!!
