BSD and Fast800 support thread #17

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Day 6 at the same weight.

I'm going to have to whoosh the equivalent of an entire limb to make up for this.....

CaptainBrickbeard · 16/01/2020 08:03

I’ve been going the other way temperature wise - been feeling really hot!

I’m down another pound so after a complete two weeks on the diet I’ve lost 12lbs which is pretty good.

My period is well underway now so I’m hoping when it’s done I might get a whoosh. I’m feeling very queasy and faint today (periods are getting worse and worse; I’m 36 and wondering how much worse they can get in the next ten years or so!) which means the only thing I really want to eat is toast. Definitely can’t face exercise.

Phoenix I was insanely hungry at the weekend and I just stuck to the recipes but ate more. Sometimes you just need to!

TheForgetfulCat · 16/01/2020 08:48

Dammit ... half a pound off so now ah 12st3 which is as low as I've been for years. But slowing down. Is it likely that breaking through the weight I think I've naturally tended to settle at will be harder work?

Two pretty good days but DS has been offered a place at the new school which is good, but the distance means Monday to Friday boarding and going through the whole transition process. Normally this is where crying and eating Kit Kats would kick in ... any alternatives? Going for a run as a starter Smile

onanothertrain · 16/01/2020 09:56

I ended up on 700 cals yesterday, not really feeling hungry this week. Planning egg salad for lunch and Stir fry for dinner and 30DS this evening. I've rediscovered mint and liquorice tea which is lovely and would be good for anyone looking for something sweet.

CaptainBrickbeard · 16/01/2020 10:47

Ooh mint and liquorice tea sounds lovely!

Riddleofthesands · 16/01/2020 12:33

Hi, stepping back in, will catch up on thread over next couple of days (death in DHs family). I can’t control menu for a couple of days as eating at other people houses and will have to eat whatever is going. Haven’t weighed but it’s probably a stone I need to lose. Friends big birthday party in just over 5 weeks so that’s the goal. I started couch to 5k today and really enjoyed it, it was hard though. Saturday onwards I should be able to get back on fast800. Looking forward to catching up and losing my spare tyre. Hope everyone has a good day.

onanothertrain · 16/01/2020 12:47

Captain it is lovely, tastes and smells much more liquoricey than minty, but I love liquorice so I'm happy.

Pajamagirl · 16/01/2020 13:20

After maintaining through a holiday and Christmas , and now over flu and shingles I am tentatively starting again today . Low carb , no rubbish but I don’t think I will manage 800 tho still managing tre 16 : 8 or thereabouts

Had a lovely little m and s protein pot , spicy beans egg and a drop of Greek yoghurt , it’s tiny and you could make cheaper at home but it was a grab on way into work this morning .. needs must

I have been lurking and reading so nice to see new people here

CaptainBrickbeard · 16/01/2020 18:08

I’ve ordered liquorice and mint tea and very excited about it getting delivered now!

Had Greek yoghurt, seeds and berries for breakfast and then made the roasted pepper and squash soup from the cookbook for lunch which was lovely! I grated a bit of cheese over the top for substance. Then I improvised a pheasant breast stew for dinner - lots of veg, some stock and quite a lot of red wine and herbs in with the pheasant and let it simmer all afternoon. Finished with a square of 70% chocolate and some more berries. Lots of water. Feels like a good day!

I had salmon salad prepped for lunch but really didn’t fancy it so made a shake instead - oats, Greek yogurt, blueberries, half a banana, peanut butter, cacao powder & oat milk. Bit high in carbs - finishing the day on 53g which is probably my highest day so far - but really enjoyed it! Then had chicken, broccoli and a caramelised onion and ale gravy for dinner.

Still seeing a loss each day even if it’s a tiny 0.1kg. 8.4kg down now since 1st Jan and feeling good, but can’t see a difference yet!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/01/2020 20:24

I've hit a wall today, I think because I'm just so busy right now and every now and then something must give. Back on track tomorrow though

Annoyingly I did actually start the day well but from the moment I got up was thinking about food, so I have far exceeded 800 cals.

Tomorrow, a run in the morning. Try to fast til lunch, then eggs and avocado. Dinner will be...not sure yet! And it's our 3rd dry weekend. I think Dh will crack, particularly if he's not playing football on Sunday.

Did better today and then screwed it up mindlessly eating a bit of DD's protein flapjack! Have drunk about 3L of water though so hoping to see a difference tomorrow!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/01/2020 22:34

@FatKate to be fair it's pretty awful, 5 out of 8 ingredients on that list are basically sugar. Don't be fooled by 'natural sugar' or any of its other guises.

@FatKate is it one of those NKD bars or similar? They always catch my eye because in the supermarket I spend most of the time putting things back because they have dairy in, or are high carb- then at the till they always have these, vegan, dairy free, high protein....and dates. Dates are the enemy!! (Apparently 2 dates raise your blood sugar as much as an entire punnet of strawberries!) You exercised good restraint if it was delicious and you still managed to avoid the other one! Like I said, I hit a wall yesterday- I'd have probably inhaled both if they'd been here!!

Not weighing today after yesterday. I feel absolutely exhausted as well. Looking forward to a nice relaxing day today hopefully- Ds going to granny's, I'm going for a run, and then hopefully a pleasant day of pottering about getting jobs done.

Yippee! I'm back down to my lowest weight from end of July. 5 months of gain gone in 2 weeks! Now the hard work begins because I couldn't ever break this barrier before!

The key for me is definitely water - I had 3L yesterday & 2lbs whooshed off today. Must keep it up!

CaptainBrickbeard · 17/01/2020 08:10

That’s amazing to hear, Phoenix! I’m quaking a little because we have three consecutive weekends away coming up - some with friends and family where staying in control of what I can eat will be really tricky. At this point, I’m worried about wiping out all of my hard work and how demotivating it would be to watch the scales climb back up after a couple of days off the wagon. But you are giving me faith that I will be able to lose it again if I do gain!

PhoenixMama · 17/01/2020 10:06

@CaptainBrickbeard I had similar when I started in April so totally get what you mean. What worked for me was to skip breakfast & then be proactive at other mealtimes (skipping the chips or potatoes, just having the pasta but not the garlic bread too) but I'm a sucker for dessert and I'm almost always going to say yes in those situs. Also I carried a water bottle with me to make sure I drank enough (water! I have no problem drinking booze!) Then I was really on it during the week, not more than 850cals a day.

The pattern was be up the following Mon/Tues, be back where I was by Weds, be down another 1lb or so by Friday & then do it all again. 2 weekends a month like that for 2 months & it was fine. I lost 48lbs between beginning of April & end of July!

FluffyEarMuffs · 17/01/2020 13:22

I was 1lb or so down this morning, which was good.

The stats from my electric scales are great. It logs fat, muscle, water, etc on an app on my phone. I know it's not completely accurate as it's a home scales, but I am enjoying tracking the changes.

I also managed my 6:30!!!!!! Circuits class this morning 🙌🏻 🙌🏻 🙌🏻

I am going to register again for next Friday. Keep with once a week at the moment, plus the 10,000 aim for daily steps (failed that yesterday as it rained all pissing day) and add in a second gym class in February.

I got all excited and tried on two skirts this morning... but alas they were definitely still too small 😔 it's motivation anyway!

And I am having an upsetting time with one of my children though. Year 7 bullying 😔 The urge to have a glass of wine last night was huge ( I resisted!) but I may relent this weekend as we try and relax.

FluffyEarMuffs · 17/01/2020 13:37

And I made these for lunch. Asparagus, pea and mint frittatas from the Recipe Book. Very nice actually. Needed more seasoning afterwards, and I'd probably add a little more feta next time, but nice. Book says under 200 calories and I don't think that's far off so it could take a bit more feta.
