Blood Sugar Diet and Fast800 thread 14

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/03/2019 19:48

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The blood sugar diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc) although alcohol is calorie heavy and can influence your appetite
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum of 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800. We recommend you take your measurements before you begin, not just your weight. A target pair of jeans in a smaller size or even a photography or two can be very motivating!

This is great @Phoenix! I’ll have to find chicken and vegetable broth. I bought roast chicken and traditional vegetable soup and woofed the WHOLE lot (600gms) down at 4pm after I accidentally starved myself all day! Total calories 318 and I felt SO naughty because it had potatoes in it! At around 7pm I had 2x chicken lime and coconut escalopes from M&S 171 cals + creamy mushrooms (68 per 100) and broccoli 🥦. I feel so full and haven’t even reached 800?! Carbs are at 37 total. It’s all so brilliant and surreal.

I’m 5’5’’ and started 22 April at 12 st. I’m now 11st 2.4 but have plateaued and I think that’s down to Prosecco over the weekend. I was pleased I stayed health and low carb but exceeded calories over the weekend 900 sat 1100 Sun. Back on track now though.

I LOVE this diet and I LOVE this thread !

goreousgirl · 06/05/2019 22:37

The other massive benefit is that I’m really appreciating food now. Every bite tastes sensational! Before I got into this I’d fallen into just eating without thinking carefully about my food. I just stuffed it in and often didn’t really ‘want’ it . It’s fascinating to note when yo get the urge to snack. Stress is a huge trigger for me, I’ve discovered. Now I just make another cup of green tea to override the constant snacking habit. I must visit the loo 20 x a day!!

lasttimeround · 07/05/2019 07:35

Have a good start feelingforty remember the first few days are the hardest as your body adjusts. After that it's much easier. I had a higher cal day yesterday. Seems to happen about once a week. Ended up at 1500 with 43g carbs. Keeping the carbs low seems to help me get back to it the next day.
Ive also found being on 800 really makes me think about what I'm eating and why I'm eating in ways I've never done before.
I will keep an eye out for oomi noodles although at present I'm not missing pasta and rice. Maybe stock up for the inevitable day. While delighted with my progress I am stunned at just how long it takes to lose weight. I think I've got watched kettle syndrome. I keep wanting to be at my goal weight even though I think it will take a good few months yet. Patience patience...Grr

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/05/2019 08:04

Do you take calories spend on exercise off the food intake total?

Beanzy78 · 07/05/2019 08:11

I'm starting this again today, I lost 4 stone last year. I've put on weight as I lost focus and I'm addicted to food.

If it's ok, I will leave my progress on here as it might encourage me to get back on trackConfused

lasttimeround · 07/05/2019 08:53

LordProf - generally no. Although be sensible and dont do mammoth amounts if exercise on 800 cals a day.
Hi Beans - please do. Accountability is so damn hard.

teta · 07/05/2019 09:00

A pound off from yesterday morning.
Well done to the new starters/restarters!

MeganChips · 07/05/2019 09:42

I have had a midweek weigh in and I’m currently 11st 11.5 so what’s that, 3.5lbs off? I’m pretty pleased with that given I did go over my calories slightly on a couple of days due to eating out. I did manage to stay low carb albeit with a bit extra wine.

I have to eat out twice more before Friday too. I possibly picked the worst time to start! I’m feeling good though and it was nice to see a different number on the scales.

I’ll have to investigate oomi noodles. The konjac ones are ok in a sauce but I am put off by the smell opening the packet so I never really enjoy them.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

whitehalleve · 07/05/2019 10:48

Weighed in today. I've had almost two weeks off calorie counting and I've still lost a kilo. Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/05/2019 11:03

Megan the Oomi noodles in my Tesco are with the fresh prepped stir fry stuff. I've only ever seen them
In Tesco though, no other stores.

Lord I do a fair bit of exercise and I don't deduct the calories from my totals. I do add extra calories though, or I get to about 6km and run out of energy to get home! It's worth playing around with what suits you best, for example at the moment I am experimenting with eating more on the days I don't run, then on running days I will do 800 calories. It seems to fuel me better. If you do add extra calories, they don't need to be carbs- it can be extra protein instead.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 07/05/2019 11:41

I survived a weekend of camping - keeping low carb was easy enough but I’ve probably gone over the 800 calories both days.

Going to continue for a third week of daily 800 cals and review again at the end of the week.

goreousgirl, I also find that eating low carb means I feel much fuller and 800 cals does not feel like deprivation!

teta · 07/05/2019 12:19

Oomi noodles are in Sainsbury’s & Morrison’s apparently.
I don’t like the smell of the Konjac noodles either but i can’t detect any taste to them. I was amused to find Konjac in Tk maxx as make up sponges though.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/05/2019 12:44

Teta it's probably best not to think too hard about what's in them!! I think they are some sort of fibrous root? I find them completely tasteless tbh and no where near as nice as something like courgetti or even just veg as it comes.

Been holding steady at the same weight for the last 4 days but it's still the lowest I've been in years so I'll take it lol. I'm also due on on Friday so I'm surprised it's not gone nuts to be honest! Will see how I get on.

Frustratingly I'm also sick again! I've just been reading about how for some people ketosis lowers immunity so I must be one of those. I don't think I've ever been as constantly ill as I have been the last few months! Any ideas on how I could support my immune system? I can't do big pills but I'm getting desparate!

lasttimeround · 07/05/2019 13:57

Phoenix- I'm not really sure about how to boost immunity. But for me low iron sets all that off. Tiredness catching bugs cold etc. How do you think your iron levels are? Its an almost instant fix with supplements for me I feel hugely better within days. Iron tabs are hard on digestion but liquid iron like spatone is great.

QRCode · 07/05/2019 14:04

Phoenix I've only gone down by 100g in last four days after dropping 2kg in the first two days, so I feel your pain. I'm hoping that tomorrow's one week weigh in will shift another 400g magically so I can drop below the next kg threshold and make it a round 2.5kg in week one.

Beanzy78 · 07/05/2019 16:05

Thank you for the welcome:)

I've started the exante shakes again, as I still had shakes from last year. So far I've had two shakes, each are 200 calories. I have my usual spin class today at 6 then will have another shake.

I had planned to have another shake but I'm not hungry, which is unusual as I've just begun making the kids dinners and so far I'm not tempted to nibble.

How's everyone's progress?

I have tested my bloods today, I think school run and rushing to work, I completely forgot but will start to check my bloods as of tomorrow. Also I haven't weighed myself, but to be honest I don't think I'm ready to do that yet. I know I've definitely gone up a dress size and now a size 14.

purplespring · 07/05/2019 16:10

I survived my nights, avoided the homemade cake and take-away pizza, and I’d actually lost another pound when I weighed in on Monday afternoon.

I’m off the rest of the week and catching up with a few friends which involves lunches out. Today was a healthy deli where I had a lovely salad (hahaha at me saying lovely salad, and actually meaning it) which was totally on plan. Hopefully tomorrow will be as easy.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/05/2019 17:55

Closing up the kitchen today on 1024 cals, 42g carbs, 20k steps (inc a 7km run), plus I'm going to circuits tonight so will add a few more steps on. It was supposed to be a fast day but I didn't quite make the 800. I've eaten really well today, just lots of good, real food and I feel quite full now after my lovely salad and spicy chicken dinner!

Tomorrow- run in the morning, probably a salad lunch, then I have tuna steaks for dinner which I really fancy with some sort of tomato/basil topping but I haven't found a recipe yet (so if anyone knows a good one, I'm all ears!)

OP posts:
lasttimeround · 07/05/2019 18:10

863 cals, 22g carbs, 82g protein. I have just lovingly sniffed an apple and put it back in the bowl after several 1000cal days. Tomorrow is weigh in and I'm hoping for another pound off to take me under 11 stone

Maccalenny · 07/05/2019 18:47

So great to read about everyone’s progress! Well done everyone.

Waterandlemonjuice · 07/05/2019 19:17

Today I’ve eaten

breakfast muffin, an apple, a babybel
25g cashews, 25g tortilla crisp things (125 cal but quite carby),
125g raspberries, some olives
Salad with a few prawns and a bit of avocado, some dressing

These are the tortillas, I don’t think I will buy them again, too carby.
www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/manomasa-tortillas-chipotle-lime/488710-405304-405305

So I’m probably over 800 but I think not by much. I was hungry today but at least I snacked on nuts.

teta · 07/05/2019 19:46

Stir fried oomi noodles with peppers for lunch .
Butternut noodles with home made Bolognase and a handful of baby tomatoes and some pecans.
I think at just over 800 today.
Now off out to take the dog on his second walk.
I need to walk off my dinner. I didn’t know Butternut noodles were so filling.

PhoenixMama · 07/05/2019 22:17

I'll look into my iron, thanks for the suggestion. I've only ever been close to low in pregnancy and every supplement I tried made me ill so kind hoping its not that!

Closing the kitchen at 823 but I'm significantly over on carbs. I can tell my period is coming because I'm ravenous! I'm finding it tough to not snaffle up everything in sight! Plan to be really strict tomorrow because we're going to have to go out for dinner 2 nights in a row due to DD"s activities. Well I say that now but I nearly chewed my arm off today! Delicious grilled salmon for supper tonight with a load of spring greens & a 'salsa' of mango & raspberry. So good!

lasttimeround · 08/05/2019 08:42
