Blood Sugar Diet and Fast800 thread 14

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/03/2019 19:48

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The blood sugar diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc) although alcohol is calorie heavy and can influence your appetite
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum of 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800. We recommend you take your measurements before you begin, not just your weight. A target pair of jeans in a smaller size or even a photography or two can be very motivating!

I'm another pound down. So that's 3 in a week!!! I'm fastening my bras on the last hook which is a same as they're quite new and very pretty...and so Eyeore-like I've found a cloud for my silver lining. On the plus side I now weigh less than dh - being heavier was something that secretly bothered me more than I like to admit.

lasttimeround · 05/05/2019 12:28

The waitrose soup sounds like a great standby for weeks where work goes nuts or work lunches need compensating for. Nice tip Phoenix thank you

teta · 05/05/2019 12:46

I’ve just made fried rice with cauliflower. Lots of garlic, soy sauce n fish sauce. Plus peas and a whipped egg. It was really good and filling.
I’m also cooking baked portobello mushrooms with goats cheese and pine nuts.
I was naughty last night but still within my TDEE but not my carbs. So I have to try and be good today. We’re having roast lamb later so lots of veggies with it are the order of the day. Kids can have lots of roasties.

waterandlemonjuice · 05/05/2019 13:00

Well done everyone! I’ve had bacon and eggs for bruch and have halloumi and courgettes marinating for kebabs later.
Happy bank holiday weekend everyone 🙂

Maccalenny · 05/05/2019 13:32

bear - well done for avoiding the sugar while a bit tipsy!

water - what are you marinating the kebabs in?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 05/05/2019 15:51

I love haloumi - I just griddle them. Then have to fight off ds!

selina19 · 05/05/2019 19:40

I am starting tomorrow I want to lose 2-3'stone.
How much did you you lose in your first week please ? Good luck to all
X

Maccalenny · 05/05/2019 19:58

In the first week, your liver is cleared of glycogen which causes you to drop a bit of weight, and also you start to have less food going through your digestive system. Those factors, plus the drop in calories, can lead to some impressive losses - over half a stone is often reported. It makes up for week three when most people seem to hit a bit of a wall!

Waterandlemonjuice · 05/05/2019 20:42

I lost 12lbs in the first 4 days but I have a lot to lose

The halloumi was marinated in olive oil, mint, lemon and chilli, from the BSD book

Today I’ve had

bacon and eggs
Salted almonds
A smoked salmon cheesecake (214 cal)
Halloumi and courgette kebabs with rocket and red pepper salad

The kebabs were ok, won’t bother again though, they were nothing special. Walked 3 miles too.

Evening all. I have thoroughly enjoyed my week of no sugar and no calorie counting but I think it definitely needs to come to an end! However, despite eating rather a lot I just don't have that horrible bloated stuffy feeling that you get from eating carbs!

I'm a bit dreading weighing in tomorrow, I don't think I'll have lost weight plus I'm due on so a bit of water retention expected- however, that could result in a good loss this week if I put my mind to it so that has to be my focus.

Welcome to all the new starters!

Hi people,
I’m wanting some step counter advice. I can’t have anything on my wrist at work, so are there any other options? And less pricey than a fit bit if possible.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/05/2019 22:46

Ooooh are you a midwife??!

Could you wear one of those old school belt clip pedometers? Or fasten a watch style one to your bra strap? Before I got my Fitbit I had s cheapy £10 Amazon one, it was perfectly functional as a step counter. The Fitbit does have a really good app though with loads of features.

Waterandlemonjuice · 05/05/2019 23:07

Ohyesiam could you use the health steps on your phone?

Ohyesiam · 05/05/2019 23:28

Good suggestions bear and water, thanks 🙏🏽

PhoenixMama · 06/05/2019 09:04

@Ohyesiam There's also something called Bellabeat which you can clip on a pocket or wear round your neck. They're not cheap but friends rave about them!

Maccalenny · 06/05/2019 09:06

I’ve also enjoyed my first weekend off. Sunday ended up at around 1200 cals and 40g carbs. Back to 800 today, and using the bank holiday to prep lots of freezer meals for the next couple of weeks.

lasttimeround · 06/05/2019 11:50

Ohyesiam- I have this one. Dont use it currently but remember looking it up and its accurate unlike other cheapie ones. I dont use it cos I found I didn't like monitoring myself.

JeanieJardine55 · 06/05/2019 14:58

Well, suffice to say, last week was not good. I hope I haven’t done too much damage. I didn’t dare weigh today but will do so tomorrow. I had got to the “not hungry” stage and today I’m starving. I’m soooo annoyed with myself.

Today I’ve had berries and Greek yogurt, poached eggs and mushrooms and dinner will be a chicken salad.

Waterandlemonjuice · 06/05/2019 15:55

Today I’ve had a muffin, raspberries, apple, hard boiled egg and tonight we’re having sea bass with broccoli so I think I’ll be under 800

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/05/2019 18:33

I was 10.6.5 this morning so although I've not lost anything (maybe a pound) last week, considering I have eaten freely and not calorie counted (and eaten a lot) that is pretty good so I'll take that. I'm now on day 8 100% sugar free, which is brilliant, but today was the first time I've thought I fancied something. I opened a packet of cookies and the chocolate smell caught me off guard for a moment, but I did resist.

Haven't totted up the cals for today but I will do now. One good find in Tesco this morning was these nice burgers, they were really tasty- we just had them with Stilton melted on the top and salad.

these

Far fewer calories than real beef burgers and gets a few extra veggies in too.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/05/2019 18:44

Ok kitchen closing at 1250 cals, 38g carbs. I did 12k steps but no run today (after my race I decided I was going to give myself a weekend off and it's been lovely!)

Working tomorrow morning so I will fast until lunchtime, salad lunch, dinner will be spicy chicken kebabs.

teta · 06/05/2019 19:13

I’ve just tried Oomi noodles. They’re made from fish and have 75% less carbs than normal noodles. They were really good in a stir fry with Asparagus & padron peppers.
Its too cold for salads today.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/05/2019 19:23

I've had those before teta they are really good aren't they? Taste like proper noodles. I do use the zero/konjac ones but they don't taste nice like these ones.

OP posts:
teta · 06/05/2019 20:37

Yes bear the texture is so much better than the Konjac ones. However I do think the Konjac protein noodles are more filling. Or maybe it’s because I have them in a chicken soup with lots of vegetables in.

Feelingfortyisntfun · 06/05/2019 21:37

Hi I’m wondering if you would mind me tagging along. I’m someone who can eat a lot. Going to try and create a healthier relationship with food whilst trying to follow this. Some challenges for me will be eating enough before bed and not eating too much during the day.

Hoping to improve mood and energy too. Tomorrow will set sail...
