BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2018 13:51

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 Smile

The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850- 1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to mainitain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, but on FDs count any milk / sugar calories.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back less than you burn. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.
Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs, optionally reduce to 700 cals gradually.
You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are fine.
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • Plateau / Losing & regaining same few lb: Many folk have a plateau after losing 15 lb +, while their body rebalances.
It may also be a longterm "set point" weight, so homeostasis is causing your body to resist losing more fat. Just be patient & you'll break through. However, if this persists for 4 weeks+ then typically you are overeating on NFDs, so aim to average within TDEE - mfp for a week, to reality check.
  • Lots to lose - how to speed up weight loss
Optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week. This helps your body adjust to needing less food as you lose weight. Also trains you how to eat to maintain goal weight.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting & Health

BBC article on the original Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

Fasting boosts "autophagy" = recycling of old cells
Yoshinori Ohsumi won the 2016 Nobel prize for Medicine for research into autophagy

Prof. R Taylor (Newcastle Uni) won the 2013 Diabetes UK Banting Prize for his Twin Cycle Hypothesis re the cause of type 2 diabetes: Twin Cycle Hypothesis T2
and showed a fasting diet could reverse T2

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson (Mosely referred to his research) showed:

. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Brain metabolism in health, aging, andneurodegeneration :
"lifestyles that include intermittent bioenergetic challenges, most notably exercise and dietary energy restriction, can increase the likelihood that the brain will function optimally and in the absence of disease throughout life"

He compared 5:2 to ordinary daily diets on overweight women with family history of breast cancer.
Fasting group lost more belly fat, retained more muscle & had slightly better blood sugar regulation.

More of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Oh daisy that's rubbish, I have no advice or experience but hopefully someone on this thread will be able to help...

Fd finished here on 511, early night I reckon as just shattered this week and up for 5.30am again tomorrow.

How you getting on with your Fd stir?

TheHoundsofLove · 13/09/2018 18:39

I also have my wedding weight as a goal - I was 8st12.
Daisy I would think that you'll probably have to see how you feel and do a bit of experimenting...it is quite common for steroids to increase hunger.

I have had an okay couple of days - I find not snacking difficult when I've got a beanpole son who's got hollow legs and needs constantly feeding. It takes such self-restraint (which sometimes often deserts me) to have snacks in the house and never touch them.
I have come round to thinking that I probably do need to count calories on NFDs. It's disappointing as the main appeal of 5:2 was that it didn't seem to involve counting calories every day. Sad But, hey ho...onwards and upwards!

BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2018 19:35

That's tough, daisy Thanks
How many times per day do you have to take them and for how long ?

Steroids can really increase appetite, hence why they have a bad rep for weight gain
Some also modify your hormones so that your body tends to store more fat, even if you don't eat more

I would personally be very strict and for the duration of the steroids totally cut out sugary treats & alcohol if you can

  • those calories at least are not essential and they do spike hunger and switch your body to fat storage

Eat meals, no snacks between, even "healthy" ones, or you will feel even hungrier

Also, go for smaller carb portions and wholegrain, no junk like take-aways, pizza etc
If you feel able, even go low carb - but check with the doctor first

re fasting:
I suggest you switch from 2 x FDs to 3 x miniFDs, to make sure you are ok with the meds - so have 3 small meals on those miniFDs
say Mon+Wed+Fri, 800-1000 cals

Exercise
If you are well enough, go for HIIT, say 2-3 times per week
which would probably be better at burning fat than longer sessions of running etc

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2018 19:42

Hounds mfp is just like training wheels, so only until you have permanent new habits

Many people lose on 5:2 without ever using mfp, with just "normal" eating on NFDs
However, others have found their "normal" is way above TDEE and is the cause of their weight gain - that has to be tackled permanently, to avoid regain.

Whenever you feel tempted to snack, chant in your head "I am no longer a teenager" ! Grin

btw, can you give him a snack budget, to be bought and consumed in town, so he just eats normal healthy food at home ?
Also, teach him to cook himself pasta, stirfries, cheese on toast etc instead of snacks. V useful training for uni later.

Borris · 13/09/2018 21:03

1388 today. I would have eaten more if i wasn’t mfp eg I would have eaten a chunk of cheese whilst I grated it

Stircrazyschoolmum · 13/09/2018 21:32

Well done 43 (listens for the sound of a gentle snore!) I think I came in a bit higher than intended (650 ish) as I ended up having chicken salad for lunch and an overly generous plate of stir fry this evening because I’d gotten too hungry. I’m learning I do better if I just eat in the evenings so I can have something more substantial.

Daisy I feel for you, hopefully this is a short term blip that can be mitigated by taking BCFs advice.

Taking the dog for a quick walk then off to bed. Night all. xx

MazDazzle · 13/09/2018 22:13

Rather than using MFP on NFD Hounds you could try 16:8? Even if it’s just for 3 days of the week, it might help keep the calories down.

Had a successful NFD today. Not sure if tomorrow will be a FD as planned, or perhaps a mini FD. I have beef stew in the slow cooker if it’s a mini & figs/Parma ham/asparagus if it’s a full FD. At least I’m prepared!

mickeymacca · 13/09/2018 22:23

I'm doing a fast day tomorrow too. Am going to roast a chicken in the slow cooker. Any one done that before? Got a nice recipe online and looks yummy. Going to just drink herbal tea all day then have chicken and salad for dinner

BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2018 22:53

That's good, Borris mfp helped already - cheese is pretty calorie dense

I suspect, like many folk, you may inhale a lot more calories during food prep tha you realise.
Some folk also tend to finish DC leftovers, to avoid waste - more hidden calorie bombs

Borris, Hounds If you want to try 16:8 - or 14:10 - that's fine, BUT I recommend you only do so as well as mfp
because many folk who overeat find that without the initial mfp training, they eat the same amount in 8 hours as in 12

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 13/09/2018 22:54

Mickey If that's for the FD, make sure it is the MN chicken that can do several meals Wink

OP posts:
MazDazzle · 14/09/2018 07:08

FD today. Approaching totm so would really like to keep it reigned in over the next few days.

mickeymacca · 14/09/2018 07:39

Thanks bigchoc will Google that...

Clutterfreeintraining · 14/09/2018 08:02

Mickey - I have cooked a chicken in the slow cooker - it’s very easy and straightforward. It does look anaemia though so if you want it to look like a toast chicken, you’ll need to chuck it in the oven for the last bit. Also, aparaently, you can’t use the bones to make stock afterwards.

Good luck with your FD, Maz and all the other Friday fastest Smile

quackingduck222 · 14/09/2018 08:21

Welcome Woggle - oh I’m so sorry to hear about your news.
Totally agree with you re a weekend FD. It’s so easy to overeat because it’s the weekend.
Also definitely not a feast day, it makes it sound like you gorge. Well done on your scale victory already that’s brilliant. The buying new jeans was my reason for my 5:2 restart too.

43 - hope you had a great FD.

StirCrazy- Tough murder sounds awesome. What one are you doing is it the obsitcal one or the team one? I would perhaps consider doing some building up of the arms perhaps as it’s probably going to envolve some climbing.

MrJolly - cool your a convert too. I love it as it really does fill you up.

Macca - I don’t post looses often as I’m in maintenance now. Occasionally it will be wooho I lost a pound for me now it’s just gaining and loosing the same few lbs. Wink

Daisy - Sorry to hear about your news. Well done for not throwing in the towel. I definitely think weightloss can still be possible. Way back when I was a member of weight loss group we had a lady who was on steroids she came with a hope to manage her weight gain but she did really well and was getting losses most weeks.
But by being on here and doing it whatever happens it should be damage limitation. But absolutely fair play to you for sticking with it.

Clutter- Hope things settle down for you soon. I went of the rails mentally last week but back in the routine now so definitely helps. Mini weekend FD is great, I usually do one as Friday is my night off cooking so it’s nice to address the gain immediately and I kind of miss my weekend FDs.

Hounds - Honestly once you get into the routine of MFP it’s alright and quick you build up a library of foods. I can’t remember the last time I scanned a packet as all my food is in there it takes seconds now. My tip is as it’s not obvious there is a barcode scanner.

Borris - well done on your NFD

Good luck to everyone fasting today.

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 14/09/2018 08:21

ha ha stir it would most definitely not be a gentle snore you heard, I have been known to wake up DH on many occasions not my most attractive feature i'll admit

hounds i sympathise with you re: snacking, both my DH and DS are huge snackers and it is bloody hard some days - stay strong!!! and well done on your FD, that's still a really good deficit I'd say

Mickey never done it but report back and let us know what it was like. BCF your comment did make me chuckle Grin

Back in the 11s today - phew - so my 1lb gain last week has gone, i think i would have lost more but i weighed in after my shower and before i'd been the toilet - TMI - but i haven't been the toilet since weds is that normal so i think I might have lost at least another half a pound Blush

NFD today and off to watch my niece in a show later where there will be a supper of pasty and peas can you tell i live in the north, I don't really like pastry so i'm hoping that'll be easy to avoid, but only if I can get home in time from work to make something to eat before i head off.... otherwise I'll be starving!

Good luck to those fasting today, happy friday Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 14/09/2018 08:35

Good news that you are back in the 11s, 43

re constipation: are you drinking enough water ?
Fizzy drinks are no substitute

Mickey (The MN chicken is (in)famous for lasting several meals Wink)
Usual portion size is one breast, without skin on FD

OP posts:
Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 14/09/2018 08:55

Thanks bcf I think I am drinking enough, especially on FD's but it seems to be every other day that I go now? will up my intake and see how i go

quacking tough 'murder' - now that does sound intriguing Wink
I often wonder how awesome it must be to be on maintenance, how long has it been for you now?

MazDazzle · 14/09/2018 10:03

Checking in for a FD. I’m clenching as I type, desperate for my 4th wee of the day and no toilet nearby!

cakegoblin · 14/09/2018 10:49

Also checking in for an FD - welcome Duggees , I hope restarting this will feel like a new start after your emotional summer.

Have had a less-than-satisfying week, still dealing with staggered starts for my youngest at school, so have been making warming homecooked casserole-type dinners and then picking at them while cooking, which then makes me irritable because I have no idea how much I've had by the time we sit down to eat. I am thinking I need to cook in much larger quantities, and far less frequently, so I can avoid the picky part of the day and spend less time thinking about food! Does anyone have any recommendations of cookbooks for large or batch cooked family meals?

Good luck with that pesky bladder as well as your FD Maz Grin and all other Friday fasters.
Borris that is a good idea to post MFP totals on NFDs! May join you.
Aim for today - LOTS more water!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 14/09/2018 11:27

The MN chicken, feeds a family of 5 for a week 😂

I seem to have picked up some sort of bug or other..have been to the loo several times and feel nauseous now aswell so will be a relatively easy (and unexpected!) FD for me

Could do without feeling like crap especially as planned some hill walking tomorrow but every cloud and all that 🙂

BigChocFrenzy · 14/09/2018 12:55

Sorry to hear that, MrJ Several bugs around atm, as schools resume
I hope you get well soon Thanks

Everyone: If you have D&V, do NOT fast until about 1 week after all symptoms have gone
Obv don't force yourself to eat either; just drink lots of water, have maybe dry toast, but don't delibertely fast

Even after symptoms disappear, your gut & bacteria are still repairing themsselves and an FD can irritate the sensitive gut and cause symptoms to return

OP posts:
Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 14/09/2018 13:07

hope you managed to hold on maz Smile

cake can you munch on some carrot sticks or something similar whilst preparing the food so the damage is not too high? Its tough isn't it...

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 14/09/2018 13:07

oops forgot to say hope you feel better soon mrJ

mickeymacca · 14/09/2018 15:09

Oh well my day went to pot and so didn't eveb put the chicken in the slow cooker.... Oh well I just roast it as normal. We'll be having it as a family but they'll have chips and salad I'll just have salad... Will let you know how slow cooking it goes next time. Hope you all have a good weekend. I struggle at weekends as they're not as structured as a week day so I must try to reign it in!!

DaisyandTim · 14/09/2018 16:15

Hope you feel better soon Mr J Flowers

Well done on getting back into the 11’s 43

And hope everyone who is fasting today has a good one.

I’m on the steroids for at least 3 months if not longer (basically it’s part of a treatment plan re the recurrent miscarriages - with the best outcome being a sustained pregnancy, none of it conducive to weight loss though!) I’m on 25 mg a day which I have to take 1st thing in the morning otherwise I’ve no chance of sleeping at night! The one positive is my energy levels have skyrocketed and i have exercised more in the last few days than I did for all of August! Thanks for the thoughts BCF - I will definitely give 3 minis a go - sounds like it could work, no alcohol for me anyway at the moment so at least that’s not a problem. It’s just finding food that fills the enormous pit of my stomach that isn’t going to make me put on a stone in a week that I’m struggling with! I’m going to sit down with my OH tonight and work out a plan for the week.
