BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2018 13:51

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 Smile

The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850- 1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to mainitain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, but on FDs count any milk / sugar calories.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back less than you burn. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.
Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs, optionally reduce to 700 cals gradually.
You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are fine.
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • Plateau / Losing & regaining same few lb: Many folk have a plateau after losing 15 lb +, while their body rebalances.
It may also be a longterm "set point" weight, so homeostasis is causing your body to resist losing more fat. Just be patient & you'll break through. However, if this persists for 4 weeks+ then typically you are overeating on NFDs, so aim to average within TDEE - mfp for a week, to reality check.
  • Lots to lose - how to speed up weight loss
Optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week. This helps your body adjust to needing less food as you lose weight. Also trains you how to eat to maintain goal weight.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting & Health

BBC article on the original Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

Fasting boosts "autophagy" = recycling of old cells
Yoshinori Ohsumi won the 2016 Nobel prize for Medicine for research into autophagy
NOBEL Lecture “Autophagy – An Intracellular Recycling System”

Prof. R Taylor (Newcastle Uni) won the 2013 Diabetes UK Banting Prize for his Twin Cycle Hypothesis re the cause of type 2 diabetes: Twin Cycle Hypothesis T2
and showed a fasting diet could reverse T2

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

HORMESIS & Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson (Mosely referred to his research) showed:

. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Brain metabolism in health, aging, andneurodegeneration :
"lifestyles that include intermittent bioenergetic challenges, most notably exercise and dietary energy restriction, can increase the likelihood that the brain will function optimally and in the absence of disease throughout life"

He compared 5:2 to ordinary daily diets on overweight women with family history of breast cancer.
Fasting group lost more belly fat, retained more muscle & had slightly better blood sugar regulation.

More of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Why intermittent fasting and stopping snacking can lower your risk of serious diseases:
Meal frequency and timing in health and disease

Fasting can help maintain brain health during aging:

NY Times Fasting Overview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Fd closing on 532 cals. .. I'll evaluate later whether I'm strong enough to watch bake off Grin if not it's a bath and an early night!!

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 11/09/2018 18:53

Good luck borris why don't you just put 1 or 2 buscuits aside and have them with your lunch tomorrow, then you are not depriving yourself?

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 11/09/2018 18:57

Are you spying on me bcf Wink i had a wobble around totm time but not excessively, but I will make those swaps. I have noticed that if I eat low carb that I do tend to do better but I love pasta, rice and potatoes

Borris · 11/09/2018 19:07

Good idea 43. And 1 or 2 biscuits probably a lot better than a donut (which will be horribly hard and stale tomorrow, won’t it?)

TheHoundsofLove · 11/09/2018 19:11

43 I am indeed a Kate Bush fan! Smile

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 11/09/2018 19:43

Me too hounds
Oh yes borris stale doughnuts just won't be worth the calories Smile

HLBug · 11/09/2018 19:56

Mini completed for today - it wasn't intended after FD yesterday but I had dentist this morning and (as per the bcf top tip) the minty clean feeling afterwards meant I just wasn't hungry. Tomato soup for lunch then haddock and potato wedges / veg for tea. Finished on just under 1000.

Well done 43 and boris for FDs today. I am also debating whether bake off tonight would be a wise move.

43 was it you who had the pelvic floor surgery? GP has referred me to the incontinence clinic (boo hoo hoo) so they can give me a scan / discuss options. I am not looking forward to it Sad Bloody children have ruined me.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/09/2018 19:58

Well done n he FD, 43
Me, spying ? < adjusts drone hovering over 43's shoulder Wink>

Borris Put 1 or 2 biscuits in a bag, to have as your pud after lunch / dinner tomorrow
Then it's part of a meal, not a snack
I agree that yesterday's donuts are usually disappointing, if not horrid, whereas biscuits retain their freshness

Ah, Hounds I remember when Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights first came out
I loved the voice

Well done on the mini, bug
and good luck with the doc - I hope they can correct your continence problems and improve your quality of life

Thanks BCF - I just want to do some blooming good exercise without worrying about leaking! Not much to ask. Bloody DS and his bloody big head... AngrySadAngry

MazDazzle · 11/09/2018 20:19

Thank you! The 12 seemed impossible not that long ago. My aim is to do a whole class with a 16 before I’m 40. I have arms like hams. They have always been chunky, but thanks to kettlebells and weight training they are now firm rather than wobbly!

Well done HLB, 43, Borris and anyone else fasting/mini-fasting today.

Just had the most amazing salad: chicken, romaine lettuce, peppers, cucumber, slow roast tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, balsamic vinegar & houmous. It was epic.

Then I had a tiny teaspoon of Biscoff Crunchy Spread (I never buy it. This was a once in a blue moon treat for the kids) which came in at 119 calories! Shock I will have to strictly ration this jar for the kids and won’t be buying it again.

I’ve always been protective of my younger sister and hate to see her struggling. Newborns are hard work! I am going to make a pan of soup for her.

I too am avoiding Bake Off!

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 11/09/2018 20:36

Wow bug you've got a good memory. .. yes childbirth buggered my pelvic floor and intensive physio didn't help so I opted for the vaginal tape operation and it is honestly the best thing I ever did. I couldn't walk and cough or sneeze or laugh at the same time never mind exercise. I've not had any side effects and I think it's about 4 years ago now.

maz that salad sounds delicious, yum.

I'm braving bake off, it's a good job we don't have smellivision Shock

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 11/09/2018 21:35

Aww you are a lovely sister maz Smile

HLBug · 11/09/2018 22:19

Thanks 43 - no idea how long my referral will take. Is the tape different from the mesh that's been in the news recently? Because that terrifies me!

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 12/09/2018 07:12

I think it's the same thing bug but like I say I've read the horror stories but 'touch wood' I haven't had any problems. I often wonder in light of problems whether that means it's 'safer' or better having it done now. I guess all you can do is ask at your consultation about the risks etc. At my referral the most embarrassing thing was having to jump, jog, do squats and star jumps with a contraption measuring the leakage Blush but still worth the embarrassment! Good luck Smile

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 12/09/2018 07:48

First FD in ages completed here yesterday Smile came in at 500ish. Feeling so much better.
Aiming to get back into my exercise regime today! Onwards & upwards 🙌🙌🙌

quackingduck222 · 12/09/2018 07:55

43 - Yes same here I was thinking about looking up some new casserole recipes.
Do you find some days it’s mentally harder? For me I think my better FDs are busy ones.

Smiled - well done on your FD.

Hockey- good luck for your B2B.

Stir crazy- nice to get some order back hey?
I’m the same

Mr Jolly - your not alone there. I’ve completely slipped back to sedentary.

Hounds - well done that’s bloody amazing.

BCF - I have a couple of FD variations usually contain eggs but my favorite at the moment is turkey sausages scrambled eggs bag of cherry tomatoes and mushrooms a huge plate full and so filling. I go through fits and bursts with salad.

Cheddar - Good luck for your FD. Can you plan your weeks out in advance when your going to fast?

I’m going in for aFD today to make up for Monday.

Good luck to everyone fasting today.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 08:22

Well done on nailing your FD, smiled
You're back in the fasting swing

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 12/09/2018 09:55

Quack - I like the sound of your scrambled egg and sausage doodah...FD today so might have that for dinner tonight

Walked to work today (30mins brisk)...every little helps

Lunch will be a rather odd concoction of runner beans and mushrooms with bovril

Good luck fellow FDayers 💪

Fortythreeandfatasfuck · 12/09/2018 13:21

well done smiled back in control

Good luck on your FD quacking,

Hmmm mrjolly your lunch sounds ahem interesting Grin

NFD today and just had lovely chicken salad followed by ff greek yogurt and blueberries, no idea what's for dinner as need to do food shop...

You are halfway through weds Fasters Smile

Stircrazyschoolmum · 12/09/2018 13:39

Happy Wednesday everyone. It’s a NFD here so I’m trying to relax and enjoy my food whilst not going completely crazy being sensible. (Dodges drone)

Another vote for stews / casseroles here. I’m a big fan of sweet potatoes and squash so hopefully it won’t be too tricky. I definitely want to try the sausage and eggs quacking I’m probably less keen on the runner beans.

43 the idea of star jumps and squats in front of my GP turns me cold but I’m glad you have found a solution that works for you. We have a trampoline class at our local gym which is really good fun but extra protection is compulsory!

Keep going fasters.. my turn tomorrow! xx

Clutterfreeintraining · 12/09/2018 14:04

Another accidental FD here! Have been flat out with three small children. One of them only started last week and is a little demanding (understandably but ever so inconvenient when it hinders my ability to eat food Grin ). Finally got them all off to sleep but the unsettled one was asleep in the buggy in the kitchen so that was out of bounds and I wasn’t organised enough to make a packed lunch before I started at 7.30.
2 out of 3 are awake now but no chance of going to make anything to eat until after the school run.

mickeymacca · 12/09/2018 14:58

Wow 43 great loss that's very inspiring and motivating!! Anyone else want to share their losses? I had a great FD yesterday ended on 553. Doing another tomorrow.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/09/2018 16:55

Well done on your FDs, clutter, Mickey
Good start

mickeymacca · 12/09/2018 17:32

Thanks bigchocHalo

Borris · 12/09/2018 20:51

Weight stayed the same this week. I’m thinking of trying b2b mon and Tuesday and a mini on a Friday of 8-900 cals and seeing if that does more. Plus controlled eating on 3 of my 4 work days should help. Although I’m proud I only ate the 2 biscuits I said I would at work today
