Quick question can we have the occasional sugar free gum?
Had a bit of an odd day today.

B. Greek yoghurt and blueberries
L. Skinnylicious tomato and chorizo soup
D. Smoked mackerel and spinach salad.

Had a very late finish in work today and have only just finished my dinner. I have 289 cals left but I really do not want to eat anything else as I feel full. Any suggestions?

PrimalLass · 01/05/2018 22:13

I've been having sf things. Probably because I haven't read the book 🙄😀 Is it forbidden?

PrimalLass · 01/05/2018 22:13

I would just go to bed and not eat any more if I were you.

PutTheChocEggDown · 01/05/2018 23:19

I'm still coming in at 900ish cals most days and since it allows some good carbs including a little fruit I'm going to try and keep it as my target. Food planned for tomorrow but weekend will be tricky.

PrimalLass · 01/05/2018 23:22

I'm at 900ish too.

Spoke to soon about the TOTM weight but it's not as bad as usual.

Snowglobes · 02/05/2018 06:23

promal and choc I have read (well skim read) the book and sugar free is good! No idea about chewing gum but would think it’s good - chewing action without the cals!
I’m getting a bit fed up now. Another 800 cal days Mon & Tues and I’ve put ON a 1lb! So over last 2 weeks I’ve lost a total of 1lb. Confused I’m sure I’m doing it correctly, carbs low, absolutely zero pasta, rice, potatoes etc. Even my curry night and Sunday lunch blow out weren’t ‘that’ bad (around 1000 cals) I’m doing at least 10k steps a day, Pilates and tennis once a week. And bought new scales! I really wanted to be lighter than this by now. I need to see results soon... big results! What’s going wrong?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2018 07:00

Morning all

Something’s not right there, snowglobes, I would have thought after those 2 days at 800 you would see a loss, (even if subsequent days balance it out iyswim) - by way of contrast, I usually find if i do a proper fasting day (800) I lose 1-2 lbs.
so: things to consider- are you weighing at the same time, on the same scales? Are you especially short and so therefore don’t have such a high calorie need? What’s your tdee? Were you already low carbing before starting BSD (so didn’t get the immediate weight loss?)

Are you weighing and measuring everything and using a tracker?

Re:sugar free. SF is ok and can be a useful tool in your armoury. BUT- I would use sugar free products with extreme care, and limit their use. Especially things that allow you to make sugar free desserts, or things like sugar free sweets. The reason being that sweet tasting foods screw with your insulin response, and can make you more hungry for real food and especially for real sugar. If you can wean off your sweet tooth, and not need sweet things (and we all do, sometimes) but not need them so often, the plan will be easier.
I have a sweetener in coffee and always have, and fully intend to stop (although I have cut down to 1 from 2) and I’m sure it sometimes adds to my cravings.
Look out for things that claim to be sugar free but actually contain puréed dates, or other subs that raise blood sugars as well.

I much prefer to plan real sugar treats into my diet, look forward to them, and enjoy them. The last was my Easter egg, the thought of which pretty much kept me going from February. The next is a slice of cake on my friends tea party (May 12th!).

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2018 07:23

Another thought snowglobes- is the exercise you’re doing ‘new’ or have you always done it? When I first started running, and for probably the first month actually, my weight loss slowed down a lot.

OP posts:
PutTheChocEggDown · 02/05/2018 07:37

Another 1lb off so 8lbs down. I'd like to see another couple of lbs this week.

The thing I've noticed about this is how quickly your taste buds adapt. Fruit now tastes amazingly sweet- I used to find it quite sharp tasting. So maybe it's better to skip sugar free stuff and just have a tiny bit of fruit? 2 mandarins are 58 cals total and quite satisfying to eat. I know it's early days for me so easy for me to say!

PrimalLass · 02/05/2018 08:16

It probably is better to have the fruit, but it's the carbs I'm avoiding. Just for the first few weeks. The huge tub of jelly I've been eating spoonfuls of all week has a handful of berries in. The whole thing was 100 cals and about 6g carbs and it's done me four bowlfuls (with a splash of cream).

I am like a crack addict with real sugar but the sf stuff doesn't seem to do that to me.

PutTheChocEggDown · 02/05/2018 08:55

I must make some of that Jelly it sounds lush!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2018 09:32

Its probably no better to have the fruit to be honest, just different.

With the sugar free stuff it’s a bit like the old slimming world mentality (I think they’re phasing this out to a degree, but 3 years or so ago...) - ‘I’m overweight and I cannot manage without x,y,z on my plate or I will never stick to this diet’ - so you have a diet plan where you can eat 5 marshmallow wafers for the same ‘price’ as an ounce of cheese for example . This idea that you must ‘never be hungry’ and you can eat everything you used to and still lose weight. I used to do this and think like this so I’m really not criticising, I’m a long way into this journey that others are just starting out on. The reality is that you can’t eat everything you used to and still lose weight. The beauty of BSD is that every single morsel of food you eat nourishes your body. There are no empty calories, or fillers, or substitutions. It’s all the real deal.

The way I see it is, life’s too short to never have dessert ever again. But if that’s my mentality, then it’s also too short to have crap dessert. I want the real deal. That’s why I love this diet. So I’d prefer to add up all those calories over x weeks, and treat myself to the real deal very occasionally- because you can have occasional treats,^ you can^ trust yourself to have it, enjoy it, and then not have it because you’re no longer addicted to sugar. And going forward, a substantial reduction in the amount of times you eat /need/ have sugary foods and treats will be what sustains your weight loss and become part of your maintenance plan

Please don’t think I’m a) a halo wearing guru (because I’m not, and I still struggle a lot) and b) criticising your food choices (again, I’m not) - this is just my experience of it, and my strategy for coping with it. The switch from the traditional diet mentality to the BSD mentality is one of the biggest, most important changes I’ve ever made in my life and one of the most positive things I have ever done for my health.

Hi everyone,

I am avoiding SF totally, because I am enjoying the goodness of this way of eating and at the moment it is giving me a real buzz ( this may not last ... see original post) I already FEEL healthier, this may all be my imagination but long may it continue.
I decided yesterday to apply for a new job. Its my absolute dream job and this is probably my last chance to get one. It's a big new challenging role and I know that if I was a healthier weight it would add to my confidence.
Splurged and had raspberries and blueberries for breakfast this morning!

Belindabelle · 02/05/2018 11:01

Hi it’s so good to hear how well people are doing. Snowglobes I am stumped with whatever is going on with you. I have the utmost respect and admiration for you carrying on despite the pesky scales of doom doing their best to sabotage. Oblomov I didn’t realise you had insulin issues to deal with. That must make any diet plan really difficult so kudos to you for giving this a go.

As for me well I am one big disappointment. Week 1 perfect 7 days resulted in 9lbs off. Week 2 a few perfect days, a few 1200 days and a few totally off plan days resulted in a 2lb gain. Week 3 is not looking too good either! FFS (sorry for swearing on this nice thread) what is wrong with me. Why can I not stick to any diet. Why am I having off plan days for no good reason in Week 2. Why, when I know I am going away for the weekend, am I eating crap on a Tuesday night.
Sorry for the rant. I realise no one has the answers to these inane questions. I am just so frustrated and angry with myself.

Snowglobes · 02/05/2018 12:02

I’m weighing foods & recording everything on FatSecret. I’ve a dog so walking 10000 steps a day is normal for me and nothing new. The pilates and tennis once a week is new. I rarely ate bread, pasta or rice prior to starting BSD but drank lots of wine (and I mean lots!) and a reasonable amount of sweet things. I don’t think my eating was that bad but my drinking was horrific! But looking at the tracking I would have had a fair amount of carbs from other foods prior to starting BSD.
Since BSD I’ve kept carbs below 50g a day and calories 800/900. At least 90% of time - some days I’ve had to guess portions but thought I was guessing up rather than down. Who knows. I’m also fasting from 8pm to midday every day and have been for 2 weeks (bar 2 days). My tummy is rumbling after a fasting tennis session now so will have some cottage cheese with spinach & a couple of crushed raspberries. I’m cross it’s so slow but determined!! You guys are all doing so well, which is actually quite motivating as I keep thinking I’ll be able to announce an 8lb loss too one day! 🙏🏼

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2018 12:31

Snow well it does sound like it should be going somewhere! Maybe you just don’t have a high amount of visceral fat due to your previous eating and exercising routine and as a result you don’t get that initial drop in weight. I have found on subsequent rounds I never had the big loss at first because those initial losses are water and then visceral fat.
It will show on the scales soon I’m sure!

OP posts:
PrimalLass · 02/05/2018 13:57

I'm not really a dessert person at all, and have done low carb a lot over the years, but I do like jelly and cream!

Sort of missed breakfast as crazy work morning, so going straight to lunch.

L: 1 x gf thin toast (10g carbs), ham, mayo and tomatoes
D: chilli and cauli rice plus broccoli

Belindabelle · 02/05/2018 14:14

Right in an attempt to get back on track I have just made a green smoothie for lunch. Spinach, kale and celery blended up with half an avocado and some fresh lime. Around 150 cals of pure goodness.

Dinner I think will be some home made leek and cauliflower soup that needs using up. I will have some protein with this to up the cals and fat.

If I need to go to bed at 6pm then so be it. I will not be snacking tonight.

yumyumpoppycat · 02/05/2018 15:29

Snow that sounds really frustrating - have you noticed clothes feeling any looser or felt any thinner?

Snowglobes · 02/05/2018 17:38

It’s very frustrating poppy. I’m about to eat dinner - homemade chicken stuffed with ricotta and spinach with various veggies but it takes me to 910 cals so I’m going to just have half the chicken - it is a rather large one. I’ll have the other half tomorrow. The kids have got smaller ones. I’m pleased I put it in the tracker prior to eating it!!

PutTheChocEggDown · 02/05/2018 18:25

Snow do you have much to lose? For me I'm 3 stone overweight so could live with losing 2-2.5 stone. I think that's why I'm losing - there's plenty there to lose. Also my losses are better when I eat some grains/ sweet potato / plenty of veg. I think they keep my digestive system ticking over. My two lower carb days were what gave me weight plateau and constipation and I'm not up for that at all!

houseRefurb · 02/05/2018 18:45

Snowglobes, I can feel your pain. I too often wonder, if I will ever lose anything at all..But, I keep continuing.
I have stayed the same since 11 Apr.
I have started going to the gym fairly regularly since (40mins of cross trainer/steps (350-400 cals used accordubf to the gym machine) 3-4 times a week and have been averaging 900cals over the period..

I am now experimenting on having a longer fasting time. Let's see if that helps. I have never done any diet before, except for short spells of 5:2 IF. I need to lose another 6-7 kgs to get into the healthy weight, by BMI range

I never had any spectacular losses even at the beginning. My visceral fat is 5, as per the gym machine. So, as bear points out, that could be a reason.

I started on 05 Feb. I went off plan for 2 weeks sort of, half term, going away etc. Also, I often end up closer to 900, than 800. So, I cant expect magic losses. I lost 7kgs from 05 Feb -11 Apr , but from 11 Apr, it has stayed the same!!!!

I intend to carry on, still...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2018 18:58

Bear in mind also that, while we may have had big losses, I for one have definitely had long plateaus. I’m far more vocal about losing a few pounds than I am about gaining or maintaining! I’m averaging about a pound a week since starting in January, which lets be honest isn’t earth shattering. The difference for me doing BSD is that I can actually stick to it long enough at a pound a week to lose a significant amount (which I could never do with sw and ww). Gradually those pounds add up.

Hang on in there snow

I’m bloody starving today- I’ve got pta tonight so I decided not to eat before I go because otherwise I’ll eat as well as dinner when I get home. Had salad for lunch and have just had a shake while the children ate tea but I’m hungry and a bit cranky as a result. Hoping that if I manage to keep out of the fridge before I leave I’ll be closing the kitchen under 1000 cals today, which is great for a running day.

OP posts:
PutTheChocEggDown · 02/05/2018 21:13

Feeling a bit snacky tonight but I've had 900 calories so must try and behave. This weekend will be hard as we're out and about all over the place so I need to be extra virtuous during the week! I've bought a packet of slimfast bars for meals on the go hope they aren't really disgusting! I've been eating really lovely food since I started this.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/05/2018 21:50

Ending on 1165, 49g carbs, 18.5k steps (5k run included)

Made an executive decision about drinking over the weekend- tomorrow I am going to buy a nice bottle of gin and some nice tonics. It’s unrealistic to think I won’t drink as it’s set to be a sunny bank holiday, Dh is off work, we’ll be working hard gardening in the days, but I cannot drink half a bottle of wine, or more, on 4 nights!! I don’t have the stamina never mind the calories! So hopefully a couple of g&t instead will mean I don’t feel too deprived but also don’t completely blow the weekend!
