Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 Smile

The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to mainitain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, but on FDs count any milk / sugar calories.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back less than you burn. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.

If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
Instead, calculate NFD target with your activity level set one level below what you estimate.

  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.
Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs, optionally reduce to 700 cals gradually.
You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are fine.
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • Plateau / Losing & regaining same few lb: Many folk have a plateau after losing 15 lb +, while their body rebalances.
It may also be a longterm "set point" weight, so homeostasis is causing your body to resist losing more fat. Just be patient & you'll break through. However, if this persists for 4 weeks+ then typically you are overeating on NFDs, so aim to average within TDEE - mfp for a week, to reality check.
  • Lots to lose - how to speed up weight loss
Optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week. This helps your body adjust to needing less food as you lose weight. Also trains you how to eat to maintain goal weight.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting & Health

BBC article on the original Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

He compared 5:2 to ordinary daily diets on overweight women with family history of breast cancer.
Fasting group lost more belly fat, retained more muscle & had slightly better blood sugar regulation.

More of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Why intermittent fasting and stopping snacking can lower your risk of serious diseases:
Meal frequency and timing in health and disease

Fasting can help maintain brain health during aging:
emboj.embopress.org/content/36/11/1474
"lifestyles that include intermittent bioenergetic challenges, most notably exercise and dietary energy restriction, can increase the likelihood that the brain will function optimally and in the absence of disease throughout life"

You're doing so well Ouch, congratulations! I hope you enjoy your holiday - I was nervous about being in a swimsuit last week but looked around and realised I just looked like almost every other mummy there except the bronzed beautiful swimsuit models but they looked miserable eating salads whilst I had chips. Plus I was so busy trying to make sure everyone was covered in sunscreen, hats etc I hardly had time to notice my wobbly bits!!

I also have DDs Christening coming up next weekend...and there will be guests and photos at ours too...Confused No idea what I'm wearing yet - I keep ordering things online but nothing so far has looked right. Maybe I'll do a 7 day fast this week and loose loads of weight?! (Just kidding BCF Wink)

HLBug · 16/09/2017 09:27

Also just wanted to say congratulations on your 5 year anniversary TiP - I hope I'm still enjoying this WoL in 5 years time!

BigChocFrenzy · 16/09/2017 11:33

Well done on your bra NSV, Ollivander
You can get measured properly once you reach goal, maybe also treat yourself to a cheap & cheerful new one in the interim.

Good steady progress, ouch

Now you can feel more confident about swimming, bug
Sadly, most other women would have been as apprehensive as you - women tend to judge themselves so harshly Sad

Gonna weigh myself today. Only had one fast but also not weighed myself for a few months. I know size 14 is fitting well and size 12 isn't so that tells me a lot really!

Just want to get down to a nice size 10!

BigChocFrenzy · 16/09/2017 11:42

I'm having my usual weekend FD, so more time for chores and chilling
Anyone else ?

I'm cycling to the bike shop in the next big village

  • I've worn out my fav spin shoes Hmm and I've HIT spin at 4pm
I'll have a lovely root through all their other gear too Grin
OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 16/09/2017 11:47

It's helpful when you know your starting point, pam

Also measure waist (narrowest point) & hips
For future weigh-ins, I recommend the morning after FD2 every 1-4 weeks, naked after loo but before any drink or food.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 16/09/2017 11:51

Blokes should measure at navel; women at narrowest point, usually about 2" above
Women measure hips at widest point; blokes don't measure hips

MazDazzle · 16/09/2017 22:18

Successful FD here too BC. Kitchen closed at 350 cals, which is lower than I'd like. I have a thumping headache though as my totm is nearing, so I'm off to bed early.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone.

SingingGoldfinch · 16/09/2017 22:25

Hats off to anyone who can manage a successful fd on a Saturday - and only 350cals at that Maz! Hope your head clears after a good night's sleep!

BigChocFrenzy · 16/09/2017 23:18

Well done Maz I hope the early night helps your head
So glad I'm post-meno !

I've nailed my FD too, loads of energy for HIT spin, then my usual fishy FD supper Smile

Bad, bad gym day. Did my warm up and stretches, and 3 goblet squats then left the gym and cried because I was frustrated at the pain 😳
Struggling with glute/back/piriformis pain every day but had to remind myself I'm only 4 months post spinal surgery
And I'm hungry 😂😂

Appaloosajunction · 17/09/2017 09:40

Can I join the thread please?
5'1" 164 lbs. Effin aaargh! (Though I was 184 about 18 months ago)
A few health issues. High BP being one of them so really have to try and lose more weight.
Did one meal a day fasting last Thursday and tried to repeat it on Friday but by about 4pm I was wound up like a rubber band and just started munching like a termite!
Anyway. Today is another day. Haven't eaten anything yet. Will try and keep under 700 cals today.
Hope everyone has a good day. We who are about to fast salute you!
Grin

HLBug · 17/09/2017 13:20

Can I just take a moment to rave about sandwich thins? And wonder where they have been all my life? Perfect size for me and 3.y.o DS and only 100 kcal. Brilliant and easily as satisfying as bread / roll at over double the kcals. Are they new? Or have I only just discovered them?

HLBug · 17/09/2017 13:23

Appaloosa back to back fasts (i.e. 2 days running) are notoriously hard. If you try and split them up you might find it a bit better? I normally do Tuesdays and Thursdays. The 5:2 thread is a good source of advice on 5:2 and other types of IF.

HLBug · 17/09/2017 13:24

Whoops! This is already the 5:2 thread!!! Sorry Blush I'm having a bad baby brain day it seems!

Appaloosajunction · 17/09/2017 18:02

Thanks for advice HLB. I think I just got too hungry and crashed and burned. (Not for the first time!)

BigChocFrenzy · 17/09/2017 20:12

Welcome, Appaloosa Smile
As bug said, b2b are too hard for most folk.
At least for the first few weeks try to keep 2-3 NFDs between, e.g. fast Monday & Thursday

OP posts:
SingingGoldfinch · 18/09/2017 07:55

Welcome Appaloosa! I echo the fact that b2b is tough. I tried it in my first couple of weeks and nearly keeled over! I've not done it again since.

Fd for me today - not very organised though and haven't got any food with me at work. I might try and hold out till teatime but otherwise will have to resort to a tiny salad from the canteen at lunchtime.

Good luck to all Monday fasters!!

OuchBollocks · 18/09/2017 08:26

Good luck singing

I can report that I did not squeeze in a fast day yesterday and may in fact have slipped too far into 'holiday mode', which is unfortunate as we only leave this morning Blush better behaviour today! Grin

HLBug · 18/09/2017 09:22

Have a great holiday Ouch!

I inadvertently fasted yesterday as DS had a sickness bug which meant I was too busy fussing over him to prepare food, and the smell/sight of his spectacular sick really did not make me feel too hungry anyway Envy (not envy)

Might go for 4:3 this week and keep to my original intentions for Tuesday and Thursday. Good luck goldfinch and anyone else fasting today!

TheMShip · 18/09/2017 09:59

FD today. I had a bra NSV on Saturday, finally got measured for the first time in 30lb, and I'm down from 38HH to 36H. I wasn't expecting the band size drop, but it's the equivalent of a band size and two cup sizes according to the fitter. I'm quite pleased. And the new bras fit amazingly well. It was totally worth spending the money even though I still have a long way to go.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/09/2017 11:59

Enjoy your vacation, ouch and tell us all about it when your return !

That's a good bra NSV, Mship and well worth the money to feel comfier and more confident

OP posts:
Ollivander84 · 18/09/2017 12:11

14:10 today as usual. Breakfast at 6.30am and I'll finish eating at 16.30

SingingGoldfinch · 18/09/2017 13:13

Well done on your bra NSV Ship! That's a significant drop! Where did you go to get measured if you don't mind me asking?

Sorry to hear about ds's sickiness Bug - hope he's on the mend now? Every cloud has a silver lining hey Wink!

Wishing you a fab holiday Ouch!! Hope you're going somewhere lovely!

It's freezing in my office today which is making me hungry so I haven't managed to stick it out till teatime - just had a miso soup which has warmed me up and will hopefully keep me going till harissa chicken and roasted veg later!

OuchBollocks · 18/09/2017 13:15

I can tell you about it now because I have just fed DS by the poolside and he is fast asleep on my lap! We are at centerparcs, it is great for us, cram all the baby crap into the boot of the car and go. Both DC are total waterbabies :) I am going to be strict with No Snacking, I promise HaloGrin
