Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8 Smile

The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to mainitain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, but on FDs count any milk / sugar calories.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back less than you burn. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF.

If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
Instead, calculate NFD target with your activity level set one level below what you estimate.

  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.
Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs, optionally reduce to 700 cals gradually.
You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are fine.
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • Plateau / Losing & regaining same few lb: Many folk have a plateau after losing 15 lb +, while their body rebalances.
It may also be a longterm "set point" weight, so homeostasis is causing your body to resist losing more fat. Just be patient & you'll break through. However, if this persists for 4 weeks+ then typically you are overeating on NFDs, so aim to average within TDEE - mfp for a week, to reality check.
  • Lots to lose - how to speed up weight loss
Optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week. This helps your body adjust to needing less food as you lose weight. Also trains you how to eat to maintain goal weight.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

He compared 5:2 to ordinary daily diets on overweight women with family history of breast cancer.
Fasting group lost more belly fat, retained more muscle & had slightly better blood sugar regulation.

Do you think BCF? I would love to think I could maintain on 6:1!

Katelovesdave · 14/09/2017 21:15

2nd fast day done.
I'll be back in the morning for a weigh in

HLBug · 15/09/2017 08:08

Hello everyone, I'm back from a week in the sunshine and absolutely ready to get back to the 5:2 and 16:8 way of things! I have eaten too much food Blush but have had a lovely holiday so don't regret a thing.

I normally weigh in a Friday but won't today as I know from previous BCF advice that I'll still be carrying some undigested rubbish and water weight. So I'll weigh in as normal next week instead. Going to squeeze in a Friday FD this week (and boy do I need it - I could probably go about 3 days without food the way I feel this morning!) and return to my normal Tues / Thurs schedule next week.

I haven't properly caught up on the thread yet, but have noticed some great SVs and NSVs and that some new and returning fasters have joined in. Hello everyone and Happy Friday!

CroakingCrocus · 15/09/2017 08:26

Hello all & hope you're having nice sunny weather where you are. I'm so tired of the endless rain.

I had a weigh in this morning and was 2 lbs down from the last weigh in two weeks ago. Last week didn't go to plan as DH disrupted my Monday fast day by dragging me out to dinner and then I got my period and couldn't stop eating Friday to Sunday. Last Friday was supposed to be a fast day but I caved. So I didn't bother weighing myself last week.

Lesson learned is that Friday fast days don't work for me. I need a proper supper after the work week.

This week was better as I could do my usual Monday and Thursday fasts. Just over a stone to go until my target.

Katelovesdave · 15/09/2017 08:41

Morning everyone
Wt 13st which is 2lb down
Bmi 31.2
Smile

CroakingCrocus · 15/09/2017 09:46

Random question of the day for people who have lost a couple of stone - did your boobs shrink?

I tend to wear a larger size up top due to the size of my breasts (36DD). I'm very much hoping they'll get a bit smaller when some more weight comes off. Has that been the experience of anyone else? Getting down to a 34C or thereabouts would be my ideal.

I know I'll never be able to wear a lot of the clothes I covet as they just look rubbish on people with big breasts. But wearing something other than v necks would be nice.

TheMShip · 15/09/2017 09:49

Croaking I was a 38HH 30lb ago ... I don't know what I am now, but my bras are definitely too large and I will be getting fitted this weekend as it's reached the point where they are no longer supportive enough. I don't think I'll be going down a band, but I suspect I have dropped 2 cup sizes, maybe 3.

CroakingCrocus · 15/09/2017 10:00

That's positive MShip. I suspect I may have dropped from a DD to a D already as one is pretty loose. I'm not going to buy anything new until more weight comes off though as I'm only down just over a stone to date.

Like you I'm not sure whether I'll go down a band either even if I get to target weight. I am quite broad across the shoulders.

My BMI is just under 23 right now so I'm within bounds of normal weight. Where I want the weight to come off is my stomach & breasts & arms. No small ask I know.

FireInTheDisco · 15/09/2017 11:11

Friday weigh in - 1lb down. Disappointed really as I was hoping for more this week!

Ollivander84 · 15/09/2017 11:25

I've dropped a band size, and probably 1/2 cup size. Succeeding in making me a more awkward size than I already was 😂

OuchBollocks · 15/09/2017 11:53

croaking what way are you measuring your band size? My BMI is 27.4 and I was in a 32 band this week (32H breastfeeding). My boobs have shrunk, I was in a 36H and as I say I was in a 32H this week - the cup size is relative to the band size so it means my boobs are a fair bit smaller.

FD today. Bad period pains, no appetite. Going to make a big quorn mushroom and kidney bean chilli for dinner.

TheMShip · 15/09/2017 12:19

Oh yes croaking, I also did not ask how you were measured and if you've been fitted somewhere professional like Bravissimo? It can make a huge difference. I was wearing horrendously mis-sized bras until I went there.

I'm basing my idea that I won't go down a band on the fact I'm still really comfortable on either the snuggest or the middle set of hooks in my 38HH bras, and feel like 36 might be too squeezy even on the loosest hooks. I'll try a it if it's suggested by the fitter, though!

ouch I'm due on today or tomorrow too. My sympathies Flowers. It's hard to fast on your period.

CroakingCrocus · 15/09/2017 12:46

MShip & Ouch I'm pretty sure I've got the right bra size or thereabouts. I was fitted at Rigby & Peller a few years ago. Definitely a 36 band. When I got fitted I was only off by one cup size.

I'm one of those triangle people. My hips are smaller than my shoulders and I've always got thin legs, even when I'm carrying extra weight around my middle.

SingingGoldfinch · 15/09/2017 13:09

I've lost just over 1.5stone and my boobs have definitely shrunk - but they weren't big to start (34B) with so I'm too scared to get remeasured as have a feeling they will be rather pathetic! I do need to though as my current bras are rather empty!!

BigChocFrenzy · 15/09/2017 16:21

Well done on your SV, Kate You should be in the 12 somethings very soon
and you're heading toward a BMI milestone in a few weeks

Welcome back, bug I hope you stored up a lot of sunshine - it's monsoon here

Well done on your SV, crocus Sounds like you have developed an FD schedule that works for you

IF preferentially targets visceral fat (fat around internal organs) and helps resolve insulin metabolism issues. So 5:2 is good at reducing the midsection / waist.

Most women with big boobs go down some cup sizes and often a band size too
However, at only BMI 23 you may not see as much change as some - although you are losing at a good rate for your BMi atm.

Be proud of your SV, Fire 1lb is the average longterm weekly loss.
It adds up over the weeks and when you look back, you'll be amazed & chuffed at the difference

Diving in from nowhere to say

This week has been my 5 year 5:2 anniversary
I'm pretty ropey at it now
because I do not need to be strict

I've definitely dropped a band size, all my 34 bands are too big. Using a rixie clip to tighten them for now until I know what size I will be as not at target yet

Ta1kinPeece · 15/09/2017 20:06

yumyum - I'm senile - PM me your old name

and is eagleray who I think - in which case the most mahoosive hug is in order

I admit I've not strictly maintained - am currently around 7 lb over happy weight - but know what I need to do ( summer in Italy was GOOD ) and can do every autumn for the next 30 years

OuchBollocks · 15/09/2017 22:16
