Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil

Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

Ooh bear I'm definitely going to try salmon in the muffins, great idea.

APlace spinach would be no loss, just in for colour on the promo photos I reckon Smile

IWill Not a stupid question! My machine sounds the same as yours and I wasn't sure but just went for it! For anyone who hasn't got one the information says you can use a grater but that sounds flipping messy to me.

I've run out of milk so am enjoying lots of nocal red bush tea today but I'm dreading tonight when I would usually have lashings of Gin and Wine

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/03/2017 13:28

Just I'm going to try and not drink this weekend as well, so we shall have to keep each other on track!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/03/2017 15:14

just gin and slimline tonic is low cal and low carb although stopping at one may be difficult Wink

Justonemorecupoftea · 03/03/2017 16:45

Grin I'm going to do my best to be good (with bear Wink) this weekend but it's lovely to know about the gin for emergencies!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/03/2017 17:11

Struggling a bit today..... Had some nuts. Then some soup. Then some ham. Then some carrot sticks. Hmmmm. Nothing too awful. But all those little bits add up.

I'm bored really. Was supposed to be doing my housework but the Hoover blocked up, so I took it all apart and washed the filters -,so now have to wait for it all to dry!! Meh.

I might go into the kitchen and batch cook some dinners. Curry? Does that freeze well?
Having fish pie tonight-,mixed smoked fish pieces, portion of cod in butter sauce (as I can't be bothered to Make my own sauce!) and I'm going to top it with a shredded cabbage and cheese crust instead of pastry/mash. I shall report back!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/03/2017 17:54

bear what a co-incidence - I've just sent DH to buy fish for a fish pie too. We're developing a BSD hive mind Shock
I have had a rubbish day - work disaster and then DS was sent home ill. I turned to comfort eating and 6 chocolates later, I am disgusted/disappointed with myself. The only silver lining I can see is that I did feel stuffed and sick after them. In the old days, I could happily have eaten a box of chocolates with no ill effects.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/03/2017 18:21

Dammit, dh came home, poured me a glass of wine, and I bloody drank half of it without even thinking (not in one go by the way, I sipped it like a naice lay-dee, but still.....)

Oh well. One glass won't hurt.....

RueDeDay · 03/03/2017 18:26

Mmmm, Bear, that sounds delicious. Well four days in and I've been under 800 calories on three of them, so I'm pretty happy with that! Feeling very hungry now though (stir fry and salmon for dinner, don't think there was enough protein) so will drink lots of water and try to ignore the rumbles! Learning point for next week!

RueDeDay · 03/03/2017 18:36

I was meaning the fish pie, not the wine! Though that sounds pretty good too!!

Justonemorecupoftea · 03/03/2017 19:14

bear Grin Does that mean I can have one too? Wink

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/03/2017 19:20

It looks great. Was it from the BSD book?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/03/2017 19:28

No I made it up! It's just a pack of fish pie mix from tesco, a cod in butter sauce portion, and some prawns, with a spoonful of cream. Then the topping is some shredded cabbage mixed in with a mixture of : 1 egg, grated cheese, a pot of natural yoghurt and salt and pepper. Mix the cabbage and egg/cheese mixture together in a bowl and spoon it into the fish mixture then bake.
Was yummy!!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 03/03/2017 19:33

I am jealous. Envy
DH has not yet returned with any of our shopping so we'll be having Korean beef tonight instead.

Bogburglar75 · 04/03/2017 10:30

Well, 6 days in and both DH and I seem to be 3 to 4 pounds down on our starting point, which isn't quite as dramatic as the book promises but probably reflects the odd deviance from the Way. And is much better than anything else we've managed over the last few years.

Now to try and keep up the motivation into the second week. In the face of the box of Heroes that DDs friend so kindly brought round as a thank you yesterday - aargh! DH who has a much less sweet tooth than me has hidden them and refuses to tell me where Smile - with my grudging agreement as I know what'll happen if I have the faintest inkling of where to find them.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2017 11:45

Forgive me BSDers for I have sinned.....

Ok, so I eventually had four glasses of wine last night. Oops. But I did have quite a reasonable day so just about scraped in at tdee for the day. Tonight I'm not drinking! The key for me is not to catastrophe-think and so I'm feeling positive instead of negative. Had a delicious cooked brekky and will have soup for lunch. Sum shining here at least for now, so I'm off out to tidy the garage!
Happy Saturday everyone!

Well done Bogburglar - that's getting on for half a stone. And I also find I tend to lose a bit then stick a bit, so you might drop a couple more pounds relaively quickly.

Bear - TDEE is still an achievement. And it was Friday and I bet the wine was good. Grin

So, end of week 8, here are my stats:

Weight - start - 11.9.8 now - 10.2.4 lost 21.4 pounds
Waist - start - 38 inches now - 30 inches lost 8 inches
BMI - start - 27.8 now 26
Percentage weight loss - 13%
Dress size - start 14/16 now 10/12

And that's purely on BSD. I had already lost 4 and a bit pounds after New Year with 16:8. On New Year's Day, I was more than 12 stone. Now I'm really close to getting under 10.

Absolutely can't believe I've survived almost every day of 8 weeks on 800 calories. From where I was, it feels like a miracle.

Scandicat · 04/03/2017 12:25

Actually, just checked and BMI was 29.8 not 27.8. At Xmas, it was over 30. So even forgetting the joy of smaller jeans, I know I'm healthier and that is the best thing of all.

Bogburglar75 · 04/03/2017 12:43

Scandi that is pretty amazing. Congratulations Grin

If I can manage anywhere near 21lbs off I'll be delighted. Motivation renewed, I've only had pumpkin soup so far today. And DH who is a keen chef is devising a very ambitious menu plan for next week comprised of pulse, vegetable and protein dishes! He's almost enjoying himself, if only he was allowed to eat larger portions of the results ...

IWillGoToTheBall · 04/03/2017 12:54

Bloody hell Scandi - those are amazing stats. Well done. Can I ask how tall you are, am trying to visualise my own results 😊

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2017 12:57

Well done Scandi that's amazing!

Scandicat · 04/03/2017 13:27

Thanks. I think its proof it works if you stick at it. I've definitely had lots of tough/down days.

I'm 5 ft 2. The percentage of body weight is a good statistic. DH has lost a similar percentage, so although he's lost more pounds, it does track across. I've also probably got another stone to go, so I guess it helped that I did have a lot to lose in the first place.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 04/03/2017 14:32

Scandi those results are fabulous - well done! What are you going to do now the 8 weeks are finished?

FirstSeemItThenBeIt · 04/03/2017 15:10

Weighed myself at the end of week two and haven't lost anything. Sad

I really don't get it. I'm beyond disappointed. I've been so bloody strict with myself.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 04/03/2017 15:50

First when I didn't lose, I changed my approach a bit: I drank more water; I really focused on keeping my carbs under 50g; and I looked at my eating window (ie when I started eating and when I finished over the course of the day). Tweaking all these points helped me to lose.
Don't feel disheartened. We've all had sticky patches with BSD but it usually works.
