Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was FAT, not muscle or water, - in most diets, 25% of lost weight is muscle, up to 50% for sleb crash diets.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His recent article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Also this interview with a leading researcher into fasting in combination with standard cancer treatment: ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Just catching up the thread is moving so quick.

Well done Cain you've done fantastic Grin

Well plan to stay with tdee this weekend went off track not too far but may have to reconsider my giant ice cream sundae tomorrow hoping that I can follow last weeks good form and stay within

Ah well it is the weekend enjoy everyone

m0therofdragons · 22/11/2015 09:05

This week I'm out for dinner Thursday and Saturday - I'll have 2 fds and a couple of mini fds. If I can maintain this week I think that'll be a success. I'm having my first trip to Zazabazaar and I have wanted to go for so long I'm not going to be strict with myself. I'm not drinking alcohol though so at least my only calories will be food.
Saturday is thai food - any suggestions for best choices?

boldlygoingsomewhere · 22/11/2015 10:39

Well done, Cain you look amazing!

Did my measurements and weight today. Have lost 2 inches off my belly and have lost 7 pounds since I started 7 weeks ago. Very pleased as I was starting to think it wasn't working for me anymore. I think it's best for me to leave a few weeks between weighs and measurements as my rate of loss is relatively slow.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/11/2015 12:01

Well done on your SV and inches NSV, Boldly
The average weight of loss on 5:2 is 1lb per week longterm.
It may not seem quick, but 5:2 preserves lean mass, which is healthier and helps avoid regain; in contrast, in the typical daily CR diet about 25% of lost weight is muscle, which rises to 50% for the v qwik crash diets.

Excellent tactics not to have alcohol on your meal out, Dragons
For Thai food, I recommend boiled fragrant rice, rather than the high cal fried rice or coconut rice.
Avoid dishes cooked in coconut sauce - have a spoonful on the side if you really want it.
Pad Thai (noodles, shrimp, egg, pnuts, chilli) is usually v tasty and reasonable cals.

Make the meal out your main meal of the day, with just soup or salad (no bread) for any other meals.

m0therofdragons · 22/11/2015 12:24

Thanks bigchoc. I will only be eating once on those days. Won't be avoiding alcohol on Saturday though but I need to let myself have fun. If I restrict myself too much I'll be miserable and fail.

Jeans are loose today - not enough to go down a size but enough that I don't have a muffin top :-D

talkinnpeace · 22/11/2015 15:32

Jeans are loose today - not enough to go down a size but enough that I don't have a muffin top
That is one of my criteria too .... the fab bit of fasting is that the weight seems to go from the belly first making all clothes fit better

m0therofdragons · 22/11/2015 17:01

Fd today and struggling. Not had a great afternoon and dc are being challenging. I've stayed strong this long so will stick with it.
I went clothes shopping for a going out dress but didn't like anything. Not a size issue I just don't like the fashion.

lovemyway · 22/11/2015 17:31

Brave mother doing an FD at the weekend. Keep it up, you're nearly there! Tea, tea and more tea!

m0therofdragons · 22/11/2015 18:10

I'm going to allow myself one more cup of tea and one maryland biscuit - I'll be over 500 but under 600. I think that's the best I can do today. I thought being a busy Sunday would be fine and it would be if dd3 hadn't had me in tears feeling like a crap mum. They're all being good now but I'm still sad.

OohMrDarcy · 22/11/2015 19:42

Evening all

Have had the busy weekend I expected! I have managed to remember to drink plenty of water so pleased with myself for that.

I've ordered my christmas party dress too.... its this www.asos.com/ASOS-Curve/ASOS-CURVE-Kate-Lace-Midi-Dress/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=5693911&CTARef=Recently%20Viewed

I've had to go for the 18 - but looking at their sizing I think it will fit ok - what do we think?

Will go back and read everyones posts now!

Iamblossom · 22/11/2015 20:18

Love that mrd!! Gorgeous colour.

mother don't be sad I am sure you are not a crap mother at all. And under 600 is a bona fide FD in my book.

I am on tdee despite having a doner kebab for tea!

FD for me tomorrow as per, London bound so that will help.

BlueBlueSea · 22/11/2015 20:55

Busy weekend, my last FD was Thursday, I had wine Friday and Saturday, weighed myself this morning and I have gone from 11.11 to 11.6 since last Monday morning. Yeh, so happy.

Though have had DH's Birthday today so have deff gone over TDEE. Out for lunch. Had cake too (which I love) and found it too sweet, not tempted to go back for seconds, a first for me.

Well done everyone on FD today.

m0therofdragons · 22/11/2015 21:20

MrD love that dress! Gorgeous.

talkinnpeace · 22/11/2015 21:35

Had a very interesting "conversation" earlier with a poster who is well known to be sceptical about "woo"
but she made the very valid point that 5:2 for weight loss is primarily driven by it being a very efficient way of creating calorie deficit.
Without the deficit there is no weight loss
but
as I persuaded her into admitting, the fasting aspects of 5:2 last much longer than weight loss

please hold that in your heads as you aim for a size / weight

I've lost no weight in 3 years and love it that way Grin

MaggieMcVitie · 22/11/2015 22:41

Back after a lovely weekend, long walks, hot choc and sofa snuggles galore. Like bluebluesea I weighed this morning and have gone from 11st 7 to 11st 1. Chuffed to bits with that Grin. I definitely feel like I've got a bit more energy and I think I'm sleeping better too.

FD tomorrow and on nights this week, so that will be interesting! Hope everyone had a good weekend.

MaggieMcVitie · 22/11/2015 23:01

Also, I am really seeing the benefits on NFD's of having a much more relaxed approach with food, which is good for me and for the DC. We went for a long walk on Saturday and ended up in a coffee shop having hot choc with whipped cream and marshmallows. I would never have had that before when trying to lose weight and if I had it would have led to an all out binge. So nice to enjoy it , record to MFP and still come in at TDEE, even after DH's famous fajita supper!

BigChocFrenzy · 22/11/2015 23:29

Congrats on your SVs, and lifestyle NSVs Blue, Maggie Excellent progress this week

Well done on your weekend FD, Dragons Don't cry, breathe fire

Dd3 now coughing constantly so I'm thinking her tantrum (that she's too old to have in public) may be down to her feeling under the weather rather than 4 years of my parenting.
I've planned crumpets tomorrow morning. I'm craving them now but off to bed. Night all.

Lottielulu · 23/11/2015 06:46

Gorgeous dress Darcy!

Your not a crap mother Dragons I'm right there with you in the dd woes how old is your daughter? Mines 13 and since the hormones started its a roller coaster, mine has me in tears too she's so argumentative but she's also having problems at school and her confidence is starting to plummet. We are at a loss what to do we want her to move school to see if it would help but she's too scared she has albinism and is worried she'll get all the comments and picked on. I hope things improve for you soon :)

Went to the cinema yesterday but never made into the ice cream parlour again daughter started to get grumpy so we came home. She done me a favour really and I came in at 1300 yesterday.

FD today gonna try a run and then pop to the shooting get my soup and veg.

Good luck to any Fasters today please let this be easy for us all lol

annielostit · 23/11/2015 06:59

Hi everyone else, when they arrive.

Lots of nice sv & nsv going on, well done everyone.
I'm waiting for my body to be normal again up and down like a good one this week.
Had good tdee at the weekend, turning into a alcohol light weight. A good thing, fell asleep at half 8 fri & sat after dinner & half bottle wine. This usually is double.
Nice frock mrd.x

annielostit · 23/11/2015 07:03

confusedandemployed · 23/11/2015 07:10

Hi everyone. Just checking in after a week off, bookended by two weekends away. I haven't weighed and don't plan to until after FD#2 - I don't think I went completely OTT but let's just say I'm looking forward to today's FD.
I have most of this thread to catch up on now so I may be some time....!

Good luck all Monday fasters

BarnDoorForSale · 23/11/2015 07:44

Just finishing up a Monday fast here. Was really looking forward to it too, after a reasonable (but controlled and under tdee) festive weekend.

Turns out dp didn't like the shakshuka last week. Amazingly for him, he made a really good job of hiding it on the night. So he's had soup tonight, and I've had slummy mummy shakshuka instead of a lovingly hand-crafted version.

Half a jar of extra garlic flavour dolmio, couple of small cubes of feta, one egg - poached in microwave (stop, clean up first exploded one, try again) and a toasted wholemeal pitta. under 550 for the day. That'll do. I'll buy proper feta before wed tho. If I only have 80 cals worth, it's gonna be the best damn feta money can buy.

Good luck Northern Monday fasters.

triggy80 · 23/11/2015 08:26

Morning everyone, I have decided to start 5:2 today. My LO is 9 weeks old today and after an emergency c sect caused my lovely plans of walking miles every day to lose the baby weight to fail I am still pretty much the same weight as the day before I had him. I did 5:2 a couple of years ago (used these threads as inspiration and lovely to see a few of you 'old timers' still here) but only ever maintained- I wasn't overweight though I just did it because it made me feel good. Also I was a little overweight in my 20s and didn't want to return! So I have two stone to lose to fit into all my old clothes which are being held hostage in a vacpac bag in the spare room. Three stone would get me to my lightest adult weight. So I am looking forward to restarting 5:2 but hoping this time I lose on it!
