Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was FAT, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Bigchoc thank you so much. I will do this tomorrow morning when I have my kit off.

Boldy welcome, I am new too. You might find some of the stuff that bigchoc has been advising me on today helpful too. Especially if you're going to be keen to see how stomach is reducing.

MrD congratulations on the positive attitude.

Iamblossom · 01/10/2015 18:51

Congrats on decree nisi mrD. Xx

BifsWif · 01/10/2015 18:54

It's my first FD today too Boldly. It hasn't been as bad as I thought!

Had a boiled egg at 1pm and just about to have beans on toast with a poached egg. Ive found drinkig a glass of water when ive felt hungry helped.

I struggle with evening snacking, so ive planned a nice hot bath and a book to keep my occupied.

BifsWif · 01/10/2015 18:54

me*

boldlygoingsomewhere · 01/10/2015 19:29

That sounds like a good plan, Bifs. I must admit I've always struggled with snacking and I'm amazed I've got through today with a small yoghurt, a plain omelette and some chicken soup. I've felt incredibly clear-headed though which I suspect is linked to stable blood sugars.
Thanks for the welcome everyone! So much good advice here.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/10/2015 19:46

Well done so far, Boldly, bifs Just a bit longer and them you'll have nailed your 1st FD Smile
If you start fidgeting, a good distraction is to trim and varnish your nails.
As soon as you've had supper, clean your teeth - this gives a fresh taste and usually stop further eating

I want to join you! I need the support, as I am rather de-motivated and a procrastinator.

SirVixofVixHall · 01/10/2015 19:51

I'm going to start my first fast on Monday, as I'm going away tomorrow.

OohMrDarcy · 01/10/2015 19:51

Thanks for the congrats all, you're right its a bit of a weird feeling - because we were together since I was 21 (now 34), and friends a few years before that so, yeah - odd but good. Its the right thing for me and over the last month or so I've finally come through it and started looking after me Smile

Successful FD so far today, just got to get the DD to bed after she's finished her homework and I can cook off my chicken and veg - YUMMY! Can't decide whether to go fajita spice or paprika tonight... answers on a post card!

Welcome boldly - I'm newish too - this is week 4 for me. I have lots to lose, but its going really really well at the moment!

BigChoc - thanks for the measuring guide... might give it a go with that as guidance... and LOVE those pics Grin

Maddy - enjoy your dinner! I tend to just have smaller / lighter meals the rest of the day if I'm going out to balance it a little.

OohMrDarcy · 01/10/2015 19:52

Welcome SirVix - come join the party Smile

Iamblossom · 01/10/2015 20:45

Breadandwine · 02/10/2015 00:45

Thanks, everyone!

That's right, TiP - although I think you beat me by a week or two! Smile

Assume you meant October in your post?!

October 2012 was when I first came across these threads - but I'd begun IFing earlier, in the February, after I read a couple of articles about how it could help in the fight against prostrate cancer. I began by eating just half my calories on two days a week, losing about 9lbs over 5 months. Then the Horizon programme was aired and I came down to 600cals on FDs.

I'd been looking around for an IF forum, came across this one and I've been at home here ever since! Grin

Congrats to you, MrD! A free woman at last, eh? In the light of that very positive post of yours, I've been wondering if there isn't room for a new acronym on Mumsnet - instead of LTB, you're going to STB - S for Show!

(Forgive me if you're still friends with your Ex!)

TerrorAustralis · 02/10/2015 04:07

Welcome SirVix and boldly. Well done on your first FD Bif

Forgive me 5:2ers, for I have sinned. I went to wine book club last night with willing spirit but weak flesh. I was beset by temptation all around me. I basically just fell on the food and didn't knock back the offer of wine. There were chocs, freshly baked biscuits, brie, corn chips... you name it, I ate it.

I have resolved that for the rest of October to avoid sugar. Hopefully that will help give the weight a downward nudge, along with fasting.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. FD today and I did my upper body workout first thing. Black coffee only for me so far.

Good luck to all the Friday fasters!

TerrorAustralis · 02/10/2015 04:09

And welcome to the rest of your life MrD. It sounds like such a positive start for you.

I don't know if this is weird, but despite being happily married, I do sometimes wonder what it would be like to start over again on my own.

anklebitersmum · 02/10/2015 04:32

OK. So DH is away this month and I was going to fAtkins but I wonder if this might not be a better alternative for me. Am I best to start with a fast-and how 'fasty' food-wise exactly is a fast as I am prone to bouts of Hangriness? Thank you!

TerrorAustralis · 02/10/2015 08:26

anklebiter for women 500 calories is recommended, but it can take a week or two to get down to that level. If your first fast day ends up at 600 or 700 it's fine.

I too can be hangry on a fast, so often best done on days when my own ankle biter is at preschool, as I can end up in shouty mum mode. If you're struggling then a protein-rich small meal (boiled egg and cucumber sticks) can be enough to get me through to dinner time.

Look at some of the tips for the newcomers over the last couple of pages, hopefully that should help get you going.

Different things work for different people following 5:2, so it's a matter of working out what works for you. Most of us skip breakfast, then it's a matter of whether you make your main meal lunch or dinner and whether you eat once or twice. I aim to eat once at dinner, but occasionally have something around 2pm if I'm struggling (and hangry!).

BigChocFrenzy · 02/10/2015 08:50

Welcome, Anklebiter
Smile
For FDs, go low GI, so concentrate on protein and masses of veg; leave the starches, breakfast cereals, fruit juice etc for NFDs.
No alcohol, cake, choc etc for FDs - they cause cravings spirals.

I find a tina of tuna (in brine, not oil) is very filling as part of the main meal.

I recommend you read the How to Start section of the OP
There are several links there to meals, recipes, calculators etc

btw, some folk - who found low carb on its own doesn't work for them - combine 5:2 with low carb; cut right down on fat for the FDs.

OP posts:
anklebitersmum · 02/10/2015 09:16

Thank you Terror and BigChoc find fAtkins easy enough but I need something a little more long term as the minute I find carbs again I'm doomed, doomed I tell thee Blush

I am hoping that a whole month clear with DH away (and hence not a bad influence on the vino front) will give me a good kick in the wobbly rear Grin

BifsWif · 02/10/2015 09:18

Woohoo I did it!! First FD ended on 504 calories. Looking forward to a lovely breakfast this morning!

Good luck to everyone fasting today Smile

CainInThePunting · 02/10/2015 09:37

Morning all!

Just to warn you this is a MeMe post Blush. It's weigh In day.

I am 12:12.5 (that half pound matters to me!)

I started back at the beginning of August at just over 14 stone (the shame) which means that in roughly 8 weeks I've lost just over a stone.
During that time I went on holiday and came back lighter plus I didn't lose on my last totm so I'm pleased with the average loss.
Actually, I'm really pleased! Grin

Good luck any fasters and welcome to newbies!

I glanced before but will have a proper read now.

OohMrDarcy · 02/10/2015 10:36

Morning all

Firstly - bloody well done to cain Grin bet you're over the moon!!

Ta1lkin - haha Grin not so sure about young or free, but yes, I'm definitely single!!

Bread - I quite enjoyed STB Wink when I got the company car very soon after kicking him out too Grin

Terror - write it off and back on it today Smile

Well done BifsWif!! How are you feeling today??

I may have done a sneaky friday weigh in (maybe I should just move my weigh in day to friday?!) and am coming in at 230.8lb today which is more than 1.5lb down so far this week Smile its all going in the right direction

CainInThePunting · 02/10/2015 11:31

Iamblossom, another inspirational post from you yesterday at 11, getting into the 8s would feel just incredible for me so it's really good to read about your achievement.
Likewise Stripytees experimenting with maintenance strategies.

Great starts from Juneavrile, boldlygoingsomewhere, BifsWif.

MrDarcy congratulations on your divorce being finalised, the new bedroom and resisting emotional eating. Very positive stuff.
I moved my weigh in day from Saturday to Friday, as Friday night is indulgence night I felt like I was missing out on the inspiration of a low from a sensible winefree week. I don't mind that I see it bounce around in between weigh ins as long as that Friday number is going in the right direction.

SirVixofVixHall will join you fasting on Monday so no procrastinating!! Smile

Terror your book club post made me chuckle. Oh have I been there!

BigChoc your knowledge on everything 5:2 and exercise is amazing and if it's ok I will be asking for advice on upping exercise once I've fixed my back.

Happy Friday and Happy Fasting for those who are.
