Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was FAT, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Aw, thanks a bunch, folks! 45 years and counting! Smile

We've had a brilliant start to the weekend with a bit of a houseful! (My wife maintains the house could be a bit tidier, but, hey ho!).

Afraid I gave up on my fast after 23 hour when I allowed my son to hack into the vegan stem ginger cake my daughter had bought for me. It's gorgeous!

About the pic: If my wife or daughter find any vegan goodies for me, they don't just buy one item - they go completely over the top. Here's what i got for my anniversary (much of it from the Lidl Christmas range) - my wife had a new handbag! Smile

That lot had better last me until after Xmas - or you'll find me on 4:3 for a while! Grin

Morning all,
Everyone had a good one, it looks like it.Smile
Have been quite good this weekend - came in tdee fri & sat. Today's plans put me under.
I did a work out yesterday, I must say bigchoc, my back legs were gone yesterday afternoon. My dh joined in and said I was the training bitch!!
FD tomorrow but might try b2b. Have supplies ready- 2 days of soup, salad veg & chicken won't kill me.
Mini SV today, half lb off on a Sunday morning. It's usually up today.yay

MazzleDazzle · 25/10/2015 12:00

Hi folks!

Haven't been on here in a couple of months. I'm now 16 weeks pregnant! I'm ashamed to say that I've living on toast, cereal and biscuits - otherwise I've felt sick.

Today though, for the first time in months I managed to skip breakfast and have a healthy lunch Grin. It feels so good to be back into my old routine! Hopefully I'll be a me to go back to 16:8 and eating within TDEE.

Congratulations on your wedding anniversary B&W!

Enjoy your weekend everyone! Looking forward to catching up on the thread for some healthy inspiration.

TerrorAustralis · 25/10/2015 15:42

Mazzle Flowers congratulations!!

Do not apologise for eating what you need to, to survive morning sickness. I remember eating toast and not much else for months.

Breadandwine · 25/10/2015 16:24

Thanks, Maz!

And huge congratulations to you! Here's to a smooth, trouble-free pregnancy!* Wine

Congrats Maz! Flowers

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 25/10/2015 16:34

mazzle huge grats! :) lovely news.

Do what you need to eating wise!

TalkinPeece · 25/10/2015 16:54

Hmm fasting is bad for you
Grin mazzle is up the duff - joining a long line of ladies who got their nutrition to match what their body needed and the baby making switch turned the right way

FWIW
I skipped breakfast right through both of my pregnacies
lots of fruit at lunch
and regular exercise
the only thing I regret is not enough moisturiser on my tummy

boldlygoingsomewhere · 25/10/2015 18:21

Congratulations, Mazzle that's great news!

I've got PCOS and had heard that fastin isn't supposed to be great if you are thinking about fertility so I was in two minds about whether to start as we would like to try and conceive soon.

Interestingly, I've noticed that this month I seem to have ovulated at a 'normal' point in my cycle so I think there is some truth that it can be healing for the body. My persistent patch of eczema is also pretty much gone! I'm amazed at all the extra benefits it seems to be bringing me.

MrsJorahMormont · 25/10/2015 20:25

Okay, folks: a serious question (sorry for the dramatic bold but I'm a bit worried).

Over the weekend I had a really strange breakout on my skin. I've noticed a bit of flushing / tingling / burning in my face during the week, just for a couple of hours but on Friday it went nuts and burned for 24 hrs solid. Looked and felt like sunburn but with pins and needles thrown in. Doc gave me antihistamines which seemed to help with the sensations.

I honestly can't work out whether:

a) I have rosacea and had a flareup (I suspected I had it last year after a period of skin redness, no burning feelings before though)
b) I have some weird allergy (but I didn't eat anything unusual, except perhaps more pulses than usual)
c) the fasting caused some weird detox type reaction which has affected my skin?

Has anyone any ideas on whether this might be connected to 5:2 or whether it's totally unrelated? I'm all set for a FD tomorrow but I have a really busy week ahead and can't afford my face to look like a lobster Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2015 20:39

Congrats, Maz You join the long line of 5:2ers mugged by the stork
Flowers
You can also do 14:10 if you find 8-hr eating window is tough.

Boldly 5:2 has helped women on these threads who had PCOS, because fasting can sometimes sort out that kind of metabolic issue and hence improve fertility.

No single WOL can suit everyone:
There have been a few reported cases of fasting reducing periods, but that seems to be when a woman is too stressed from external causes / over-exercising / too lean already / doing zero-cal ADF longterm.
If someone triesfasting a few weeks and decide they prefer another method, that's fine. Whatever works best for the individual.

Congratulations on 45 happy years together, B&W
Flowers
A great milestone in your life and such a lovely family celebration.
All those vegan goodies too, very thoughtful. Now think of your belt buckle and ration them out.
Wink
I've done very indulgent Fast 5 (5 hr daily eating window) this weekend, but with a 24-hr zero-cal fast from Saturday lunch to Sunday lunch, so my version of Brad Pilon's "Eat Stop Eat".
This morning, I did HIIT spin followed by 70 mins lifting weights, up to 133kg / 293 lb. So, no problem training after 20-22 hrs on zero cals.
Yes, tip "they" also claim fasted training reduces your fitness ! Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 25/10/2015 20:45

MrsJ Noone has reported this and we are on main thread 57, with several thousand "clicks" on 5:2 topics per month.
The hundreds of studies I've read haven't mentioned it either.

Maybe something you ate / drank, wore, or have you changed or touched washing powder / fabric conditioner, general cleaning product ?

In fact, several fasters - and scientific studies - have reported that fasting can help psoriasis, acne and various skin conditions caused by hormonal issues.

OP posts:
annielostit · 25/10/2015 22:54

Mrsjorah,
I have rosacea, herpes virus that I get over my cheeks - boil spot infected things.
Since starting 5:2 its calmed down - no dots or flushing?
I'm not taking my meds (anti virals & anti biotics)at the minute either. I only get flushing when I'm at my parents, that's because the heatings to high. I've not got any now & I'm a bottle of wine in.
Today didn't go to plan!!!!!x

MrsJorahMormont · 25/10/2015 23:27

Ok thanks bigchoc and annie. It may just be awful coincidence. My other theory is that I have suddenly become 'sensitised' to my makeup. This happened once before with a makeup I wore happily for months and then suddenly my skin started reacting. So hopefully if I keep taking the antihistamine and tread carefully with skin care / makeup it will settle.

Stayed within TDEE all weekend by eating carefully during the day which allowed for nice dinners and a pud. All set for FD tomorrow. I have my trusty veg soup but no pulses this time - going to have some chicken instead. Also made some pumpkin soup tonight for the first time and it's absolutely beautiful! Have it stowed in the freezer ready for Thursday's FD Smile

Good luck all Monday fasters! A hellish week ahead so won't be online as much but will check in for the moral support when I can!

Congratulations mazzle Thanks

shortaris1 · 26/10/2015 08:03

Morning all, mind if I join?

First ever FD today and all prepped and good to go. Can't manage without breakfast so just had a tiny 70 cal one and will have a tiny dinner later and homemade soup for lunch in the middle. I rarely weigh myself but I'm 5'0 and my belly is getting bigger and bigger so my Goal is to get it looking better!

Iamblossom · 26/10/2015 08:16

8 6 this morning Shock. After 4 NFDs...

New scales low.

A week at Butlins should sort that out.....Grin. Leaving at 10.

Applesnotcakes · 26/10/2015 08:26

Welcome short. You'll find tons of support in here and lots of invaluable info

I struggle to keep as low as 500 cals but am planning 850 today.

No breakfast. 300 cal ready meal for lunch. Stir fry dinner and a mug of carrot soup late pm as I won't be home for dinner until 9

Lots of water and a few black coffees. Hopefully I can do it and leave the snacks alone. Always my downfall. Biscuits or chocolate late evening in front of the tv. Such a bad habit. But hopefully as dinner will be late tonight it will be easy to stop after that

Good luck fasters

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2015 08:51

Welcome, Shortaris Good luck on your 1st FD. Let us know how you get on
Smile
5:2 is good at reducing belly fat, because it can help the insulin metabolism issues that often cause it. A great many 5:2ers have achieved lean waists.

I suggest you measure yourself today: waist at narrowest point (about 2" above navel), also hips. That will enable you to monitor changes.
I recommend people aim for waist less than half their height as a major milestone. Then see if they can continue to get a bit leaner.

Weight around the waist suggests checking on your consumption of added sugar foods and alcohol, both of which tend to add fat there.
Aim to stay within NHS safe limits for alcohol (see link in the How to Start section of the OP)

I also recommend you calculate TDEE via the link there.
At 5'0" your TDEE is probably low, so ideally mfp for the first week, to check that you average around TDEE on NFDs. That has been a shock for many of us, to realise how much we eat.

There are several maintainers who are on the short side. We continue with 5:2 longterm because enables us to eat more on the other 5 days, as well as because of the health benefits of IF.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2015 09:22

Trouble with Snacks

No snacking is really important, especially on carby sugary fatty junk, which are calorie dense and also muck up your insulin metabolism.

  • Junk on FDs or mini-FDs can significantly reduce their effect
  • Late evening snacks in particular prevent the normal fat-burning you should be experiencing overnight.

Some tips to stop those snacks:

Supper: As soon as you have finished eating, drink a glass of water, then clean and floss your teeth. Use a minty mouthwash.

NFDs: At lunch measure out a small portion as your dessert and put the packet away, before you serve the meal.
New rule: no sweet junk at any other time, e.g. none after supper.

TV: No eating meals while watching TV. Just have water, unsugared tea, zero cal drinks.

If you have a lockable cupboard in the house, put the junk there. Psychologically it helps.
Stick a notice on the door in big red letters "Do I really NEED this ?"

It takes about a month for new habits to become fixed.

Some folk find only cold turkey works, because if junk is in the house, they eat it.
Would you find it easier to bin all your biscuits & choc - see the shock of binning money - then stop buying them ?
You can put the money you would have spend in a transparent jar, so you see it mount up.

Morning all

Happy Monday!

Welcome Short Smile you'll find plenty of support here!

Blossom - amazing SV there - enjoy butlins Grin

Jorah - hope your soup with chicken instead of the pulses is more filling for you

Mazzle - congratulations!!

I have a FD tomorrow - and I have to plan how to make it work with half term... the DC are obviously about more and less clubs going on - they are at sports camp during the day so should be ok, just need to keep the mind busy - work is crazy so hoping it'll be fine!

Stepped on the scales this morning and they are the same as friday which is ace, bearing in mind I save calories for the weekend its normally a little up on monday morning. I've had another alchohol free weekend - been 2 weeks I think since my last glass of wine, giving my liver a nice break ready for next weekend (which I will do my best to keep sensible!)

Am wearing some new size 18 super skinny M&S jeggings things today - am chuffed they are fitting nicely. Got a little bit of tummy on the top - so will be over the moon once thats gone too... that will be the start of them starting to get too big hopefully!

MrsJorahMormont · 26/10/2015 09:47

Good luck shortaris and have a lovely holiday blossom!

Great NSV Darcy! You've reminded me of one of my NS targets - to get back into my skinnies Smile

Good luck today all fasters!

TerrorAustralis · 26/10/2015 10:03

Welcome shortaris. Hope your first FD is going well.

Have a great holiday blossom.

I was planning my usual Monday FD today, but I was tired and starving by lunchtime, so decided to make it a 8:16/mini-FD and do the full FD tomorrow.

Good luck to any Monday fasters.

annielostit · 26/10/2015 10:18

Happy Mondays everyone.
Well done on the sv & nsv going on.
Not a good Sunday, late plans put me over but that's gone now.
Have done my gym workout already, legs are gone again.
Doing b2b FDs, think I need a boost.
mrdarcy, do the new jeans come up to the belly or are the low rise? Could do with new myself but don't like them low.Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2015 11:43

Your gym workout is a great start to the week, Annie
Try 650 cals if you are doing b2b.

Sounds sensible, Terror Aim to eat plenty of protein & veg today with some complex carbs and try to avoid alcohol - it makes the following FD tougher. Then check you have suitable protein and veg for the FD tomorrow.
How about a nice warm bath and an early night, to pamper yourself and regain energy.

Congrats on 2 NSVs, Darcy New skinnies and an alcohol-free weekend < listen to your liver singing happily on its holiday Wink >
Make sure you get plenty of use from those jeggings - before they are too loose and fall down o your ankles.

Power onward to those skinnies, MrsJ Think how proud you'll feel, showing them off again.
