Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was FAT, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

I looked up how long to store hard boiled eggs when I'd overlooked one in the fridge, and a week is just fine.
FD here today. I had my usual portable egg and ham with some salad on a plate as I'm home for lunchtime . Added a bit of gherkin for the novelty. I've purchased a jar of gherkins for snacking if a fast is getting too much.
NSV today, as I tightened my bra band to the next hook, I noticed that my 'back bust' is all but gone. No unsightly bulge under the bra at the back. Encouraging as the scales are only moving very slowly.
Good luck today, fellow fasters.

OohMrDarcy · 22/10/2015 13:31

Thursday FD here and its going well Smile

Just had my lunch of half a bag of sainburys BGTY caesar salad... will have the rest tonight with some chicken and extra salad - cucmber and raw carrot if I'm not satisfied.

Interesting development for those thinking about the psychological side... Just had to pop to local supermarket before eating to grab some bits for the DC... didn't feel hungry at all (at that point had had nothing but water all day) didn't even look at the treats and think about getting them!

Well done to all doing the fast today

MrsJorahMormont · 22/10/2015 13:40

Thank you egg-informers :o Good to know my egg won't go to waste! He's on the menu for tonight.

Well done blossom and fusspot on a SV and a NSV respectively. Terror thanks, that's really encouraging about the FDs and thinking less about food. I would love that as I do spend more time thinking about / resisting food than I like. I will share Jorah with you. He's an animal, I haven't got the energy on FDs Wink

FD going well so far. No food yet, just a cup of hot water and some sparkling water (the flavoured kind so 5cals a glass). I have my soup and chicken on standby, will probably have them soon. I feel quite clear headed today - think it helps that I have had sensible NFDs, whereas on Monday I went from eating a million cals on Sunday to 500 and it was total body shock!

I'm going to make Fri mornings my weigh in mornings although I know I probably won't have lost anything tomorrow, especially as it's my heavy TOTM.

TerrorAustralis · 22/10/2015 13:41

Great NSVs fusspot & MrD - congratulations!

MrsJorahMormont · 22/10/2015 13:41

Good fasting Darcy!

Iamblossom · 22/10/2015 13:45

My education about snacking continues. And I just stop eating when I am full now. This is also new.

Yes 8 7 is a new low for me, I have not been in the 8s since, well I can't remember, was married at 25 and am sure I was 9 something then. Am 40 now. Delighted to be my lowest adult weight at this milestone age - and am the fittest I have ever been as well.

My starting weight on 5:2 was 9 stone 5, and I have never been overweight. But I feel amazing at this weight. Got comments from 2 separate people in the gym this morning about how I looked slimmer. Am buying a new coat form Next, and it was delivered to the store yesterday, all the reviews said it came up very small so I ordered a 12 - it was huge on me and have now ordered the 10. I don't want to lose much more though, but it is hard to decide what would be an ideal. I guess this weight is, and allows me to indulge at weekends if I do a fast day or 2 when needed.

Ok I'll stop boasting now. (can I just say that I don't talk like this in RL? mememememememe)

Sorry for those who slept poorly last night!

Iamblossom · 22/10/2015 13:46

what is BGTY?

OohMrDarcy · 22/10/2015 13:49

Be good to yourself blossom - their lower fat range

Lulabellarama · 22/10/2015 14:43

So my porridge oats completely spilled over in the microwave, meaning I only had half the amount, plus a hardboiled egg mashed with balsamic vinegar and salt. I feel totally fine and probably could have pushed through lunch if I'd needed to. Amazing!

mrswhiskers · 22/10/2015 14:47

bigchoc I have a small waist already - 26 inches. I don't seem to carry much weight at all on my torso but my legs and bum seem to be carrying all the weight I re gained over the summer. I put on 2 inches on each thigh!

Iamblossom · 22/10/2015 14:47

Ha ha Lula I had a vision of you licking the microwave plate!

Lulabellarama · 22/10/2015 16:10

It was a close run thing blossom

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2015 16:25

Congrats on your back fat NSV, fusspot
Lost inches on 5:2 are lost fat;
the scales sometimes move very slowly, because intermittent fasting preserves muscle mass - this is very different to a traditional diet where typically 25% of lost weight is muscle, maybe 50% in crash diets:
That just slashes BMR / TDEE and also leaves a "skinny-fat" look.

The tape measure is the best indicator of lost fat.

MrsW That waist measurement is excellent, indicating very low levels of the more dangerous visceral fat (arounf the organs)
Lower body fat is not harmful within reason, but is usually very slow and difficult for women to shift - we have far more alpha receptors (resisting fat-burning) there compared to beta receptors (much easier to burn fat).

I lick porridge off the nuke platter. Doesn't wveryone ?
Blush Grin
MrsJ Keep on track and you should lose retained water weight plus another lb or so the week after totm.

This is exactly the right place to boast, Blossom and celebrate every milestone and SV together

It's the work microwave, I hope that changes your view Bigchoc?

Can I ask if anyone suffers with anxiety or panic attacks here? I have done in the past and am struggling a bit with the 'wired' feeling that fasting is giving me. Wondered if anyone had any strategies?

ednabuckett · 22/10/2015 18:29

I'm a bit heavier than your starting weight now blossom - by 4lb as of today! I must admit - my lowest in my adult life has been just under 9st which was when I got married 6 years ago. I looked good at that weight and would love to return there. At my heaviest I was in the upper 10s (baby weight) and my more constant weight has been about 10.2 - 10.4 but I just couldn't get below it. UNTIL NOW WHOOP! So maybe another 10lb to go to get to wedding weight.

Some friends thought I looked a little too skinny at that weight but it's about how I feel. I was bloody fit then - and I won't manage that now. Plus I have massive norks which really does not help matters!

So that's nearly a stone - how long did it take you blossom?

annielostit · 22/10/2015 18:42

How can a Caesar salad sound so inviting?? And porridge....
Feels like a tough one today - oh worked from home and kept eating stuff. Bog off back to your office !!!!! He has now, so late dinner.
I would be bragging if I dropped to your size blossom. I wouldn't get a size 12 coat up my arms, but I live in hope by all your successes that I'll be 11stone by next summer.

Iamblossom · 22/10/2015 19:12

That was a nice thing to say big Choc. And others. Thankyou.

Edna i think i started this in June? Have had two weeks in Greece where I didn't fast, weekend after weekend (every weekend?) where I have drunk and eaten loads, and yet have consistently, slowly lost pound after pound.

It works.

My DH is delighted - I was strict low carb for 5 years, during which time I said "no thankyou" to his signature pasta dishes, roasties in sunday lunch, beans in a stew, chips or potato with anything, a slice of any cake I ever baked, (i bake all the time)... Etc.... He got cross and frustrated and said I reminded him of his mum who was on a diet his whole childhood. This way I can fast without him even noticing and eat what everyone else eats on weekends, and am over half a stone lighter as a result! Win win!

Iamblossom · 22/10/2015 19:15

this the coat I have bought

MrsJorahMormont · 22/10/2015 19:15

Lula on the anxiety thing I actually googled that today because I had a bout of feeling 'wired' around 4.30-5 pm. I found a blog which explained it a little - something to do with when you wake up in the morning you release cortisol to get you out of bed and fasting can prolong that as you are still in alert, food-searching mode. Mine did go away (and I've had problems with anxiety before) and it said an evening meal is good because it releases the other hormones to help you get sleepy, ready for bedtime.

I still feel really alert so hope I don't end up awake overnight! Going to hold off on my evening meal for a while yet.

MrsJorahMormont · 22/10/2015 19:17

Always good to treat yourself in a non-food way blossom - a new coat is a nice 'reward' for your weight loss.

MrsJorahMormont · 22/10/2015 20:05

Ok, me again, with yet another question - sorry! Blush

I've been thinking about what BigChoc and others said about preparing for a big night out by eating lightly during the day. We have a feast meal out tomorrow night and I fully intend to get my usual calorie filled main. BUT I am thinking ahead and planning my other food for the day. I was wondering if any of you can recommend any snack type bars e.g. protein bars or similar which can survive in a handbag or glove compartment but will hit the spot as a 'meal' rather than a snack. I was thinking I might try one tomorrow for lunch (I have a chicken wrap made for breakfast).

It would be good to know some as I have to travel quite a bit over the next few weeks for work and it involves big meals out so it would be good to have some good meal replacements which can travel and don't require a fridge.

OohMrDarcy · 22/10/2015 20:12

Evening all

another successful FD under my belt, came in around 450... was enough that I could have a little kinder choc bar thing for pudding if I wanted... its sat next to me right now as I just don't need it! Smile

Get you on the NSV size 10 coat blossom! Ace Grin

Hope everyone elses FD's have gone well and you're feeling positive and raring to go anyone fasting tomorrow!

Did I mention I love this WOE ?

BigChocFrenzy · 22/10/2015 20:23

MrsJ "Snack" bars, protein bars, cereal bars are all just disguised sweets.
I wouldn't recommend any of them.
Maybe take a measured piece of cheese and a measured portion of unsalted almonds in a little tub ? Plus an apple.
