Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Dr Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Coffee and almond milk for breakfast
Gazpacho and egg for lunch and gazpacho and veg for dinner
Miso or marmite for extras

BleachEverything · 28/07/2015 08:12

Hi everyone, another fast day for me. Good luck to all fasters today.

MrsNutella · 28/07/2015 08:20

Wishing all Tuesday casters a good day.

I had a really good FD yesterday. Just less than 600 cal. I "spent" 100 on a cappuccino. Which I had in a real coffee shop all on my own with no children. It was totally worth it!!Grin

It feels good to have a successful FD under my belt. I hope it is the start of a new path for me, one where I edge closer to my goals.

BrewThanks For everyone.

MrsNutella · 28/07/2015 08:52

*fasters, thank you iPad

mrsmugoo · 28/07/2015 09:05

Just eaten 350 cals of croissant so probably no FD for me today :-/

BigChocFrenzy · 28/07/2015 09:29

Congrats on the SV, magical Good start. Your logging and planning is paying off.

Well done on the FD, MrsNut You're back in the swing.

Good luck, Bleach Let us know how you do

MrsMug I suggest you make today a healthy NFD within TDEE and try the FD tomorrow

OP posts:
TerrorAustralis · 28/07/2015 09:57

Successful FD yesterday, managed to come in at 450 cals, despite hunger & cravings.

NFD today and woke up pretty hungry, held off until I met a friend at a cafe and had eggs on toast. Had a very light lunch and plenty of calories in reserve for dinner.

I found some fresh goats cheese at the supermarket (an expensive treat in this part of the world) and happily discovered it's lower in calories than most other types of cheese. So I'll find a way to incorporate that into my FD tomorrow. Also bought some Puy lentils to help bulk up FD vegie soup - they are a bit lower calorie and higher protein than the other types of lentils I looked at.

My big problem at the moment is a painful leg/knee. I seemed to somehow injure my hip while swimming a while back. Despite visits to the osteopath and stretching, it's not getting better. Some days are better than others. I'm still doing my resistance program, but it's limiting my exercise otherwise. It's hard to exercise without using your legs!

Good luck to all the Tuesday fasters.

Iamblossom · 28/07/2015 11:01

Fd going well so far, being in the car for a 2.5 hour drive to droitwhich to meet my boss has helped, as will the return journey. Don't know whether to tell him I do 5:2 when he suggests lunch, or just say I am not hungry....

Breadandwine · 28/07/2015 11:17

Hi Australis

I'm doing sitting down exercises ATM - have a hernia op coming up.

So I do seated kettlebell lifting and use a resistance band. Can be quite strenuous - which is the point, I suppose! Grin

About the pain, have you thought of acupuncture?

TerrorAustralis · 28/07/2015 12:11

Acupuncture is a good idea. I'll look into that, thanks.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/07/2015 12:25

Terror Without using legs, you can do:
. pressups - work the entire upper body & abs
. abs: situps of all kinds, plank, leg raises
. upper body strength with bands or dumbbells, sitting down:
bicep curls, front deltoid raises, lateral raises, benchpress, triceps (vertical arm, then bend at elbow, behind the neck)

BigChocFrenzy · 28/07/2015 12:29

Blossom Why not say you'd like a very light lunch, like a salad and that you're not hungry when travelling.
Polite, respectful people respect boundaries and don't force food on you.

I've had some acute pain in my foot joints and am now being investigated for gout! Shock

I've read fasting can both cure it and cause it.

I don't know, it seems it's mostly an illness of older men who drink and eat a lot of meat. I'm a 30-something female vegetarian who rarely drinks. However it runs in families and I'm pretty sure my dad had it.

TalkinPeace · 28/07/2015 13:20

terror
Knee pain is an absolute bugger : you have my sympathies.
If you seach my posts on the exercise threads I regularly plan ways round it for people.

stripy
DH gets gout : its like hot needles being stuck into your joints.
Dietary changes are needed, but its worth it.

stripytees · 28/07/2015 13:28

TiP it's just that I mostly never eat the foods on the 'no' list so I don't know what I could change! The only ones I eat are asparagus, mushrooms and legumes but not to excess. Might have to give up hummus? Grin

TalkinPeace · 28/07/2015 13:42

stripy
rhubarb sets DH off ( a shame as we grow lots of it)
stone fruits help : the jars of cherries from Lidl can curtail a bout
anchovies and black pudding are the two things we've had to restrict - but they are not on your menu so I'm not sure.
Get them to be certain it is gout though ....

stripytees · 28/07/2015 14:07

Yes, hoping it isn't gout really.

The only good thing was that the doctor's scales had me as a whole kg lighter than the scales at home even though I was wearing clothes and shoes. Wink

fusspot66 · 28/07/2015 17:52

Gout can be triggered by starvation.

TalkinPeace · 28/07/2015 17:56

Gout can be triggered by starvation.
Link please - as DH has been fasting for 3 years and we've not noticed that correlation
and he got gout much more before he started fasting

stripytees · 28/07/2015 18:21

That's what I've read too - seems to be linked to potassium loss and dehydration raising uric acid levels.

I am probably guilty of not drinking enough water on FDs... so who knows.

fusspot66 · 28/07/2015 19:02

Sorry TIP
Can't link. This harks back to the medicine class in my college days. Gout, while associated with excess e.g port and red meat can also be triggered by fasting. Can be triggeredby salicylates yet managed with high dose aspirin. Certain heart drugs/ blood pressure drugs can cause it too.

TalkinPeace · 28/07/2015 19:15

fusspot
is that within the last 5 years - because since DH started getting it 15 years ago, the guidance has changed masses ....

stripytees · 28/07/2015 19:18

If you google "can fasting cause gout" you'll come across articles saying yes, as well as articles saying it actually cures it. Hmm

Iamblossom · 28/07/2015 19:29

Successful fast day. Told boss I had had a big breakfast :

Salmon fillet with steamed courgettes and leeks
0% greek yoghurt with pumpkin seeds and blueberries
Sugar free jelly
Braeburn apple

560 calories.

TalkinPeace · 28/07/2015 19:33
