Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Dr Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Well, my blood tests have come back and the liver function test showed a marginally high level of bilirubin which could indicate a condition called Gilberts syndrome. I have to go back for more blood tests at the end of the week to double check.
I do seem to have a lot of the symptoms so a positive diagnosis would explain a lot.
NFD today and I think I've finally joined the ranks of those whose stomachs have shrunk after fasting! Grin

TalkinPeace · 22/07/2015 14:46

mrswhiskers
just looking at the NHS website, that makes sense.
So lots and lots and lots of fluids will be in order for you Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 22/07/2015 15:46

MrsW Gilberts Syndrome is a genetic liver condition, not related to lifestyle.
However, if you have it, fasting may not be advisable for some folk, so do consult with your GP whether to continue 5:2, 16:8 or another kindof WOE.

Stripy Congrats on your compliments NSV.
Yes, when a short person is 20lb overweight, it is noticeable, as is the different appearance after they achieve a healthy BMI.
Some taller people may consider they "carry it well" when the 20lb is evenly distibuted, but even then, the before / after is clear.

HazeyJane I thoroughly washed those fishy noodles, tried dry-frying, tried mwaving. Still smelt, felt and tasted like fish vom to me !

Terror On the couple of occasions I tried b2b fasts, the 2nd day after lunch I felt starving and weak.
I exercise strenuously 5-6 days per week and I know tip works out a lot too, so maybe we can't release sufficient fuel at the required rate during exercise.
Probably also due to the individual metabolism and % of body fat.

Well done on your SV, Deckswabber
I suggest dropping to 5:2 during totm. A more relaxed week once per month is a good idea anyway with ADF, to avoid over-stressing.

LetMeDriveTheBus · 22/07/2015 19:03

Welcome Aleesha Smile.

I'm having a hungry few days. First time I've really struggled to keep on track but am trying to keep around TDEE. Not hopeful for a loss this week but would be content with STS.

confusedandemployed · 22/07/2015 19:07

Hi Aleesha

On FDs do you split your calories into more than one meal, or just save them all for dinner?

BigChocFrenzy · 22/07/2015 19:10

Welcome, Aleesha

BigChocFrenzy · 22/07/2015 19:12

If you are BFing, you can have up to 1000 cals on FDs.
You can optionally reduce gradually to 700 cals, return to 1000 cals during growth spurts, whatever you prefer.

stripytees · 22/07/2015 19:25

BigChoc thanks! Technically I was 8 pounds overweight in terms of BMI, the rest has been lost while already a healthy BMI. But I know what you mean. :)

TiP yes, that happens a lot in my circle of friends - everyone is so conmitted to "health at every size" and "fat acceptance" that weight loss is practically a dirty word.

FD here. Natural yoghurt and red currants at midday and 2 hard boiled eggs, carrot batons, chicory leaves, cherry toms and hummus for dinner. Feeling really good and not hungry.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/07/2015 19:42

Overweight / obesity is normal in our society, so it is not that most overweight folk need worry about standing out, unless they are very obese indeed.
It's just that after weight loss, people remark how good you look. It's the contrast, IYSWIM.

ye I split in few snacks.but some days I can't take my head out of fridge.sometimes I don't eat all day still feel all energetic. I think it's just some days.normally I m a healthy eater.it's my birthday end of this weak will try to stick with healthy eating after that.

Aleesha · 22/07/2015 20:22

I am not a overweight person but don't feel comfortable with my weight. my dh trying to convince me to not to lose anymore weight????

TalkinPeace · 22/07/2015 20:27

A lot of my friends are fellow gym goers so we are unusually lean and fit as a group
and because we all see each other naked and compare ourselves with our instructors,
aiming for lean and mean is a shared goal

Aleesha
THe thing to explain to your DH is that being leaner and fitter as you age will let you both have more years of healthy life.

stripy
As I'm sure you are aware, I regularly get accused of "fat shaming"
but actually the evidence is now incontrovertible that getting leaner and fitter is the sure fire way to live longer and healthier

BorderWrangler · 22/07/2015 20:35

Hi Aleesha Smile

Not posted in a few days, but been checking in; congrats on all the NSV and SVs!

Had quite an easy FD yesterday. Decided to branch out from soup and boiled eggs when I got home from work, so stir fried up a load of veg (everything from broccoli to peppers and chilli) in a teaspoon of oil (and a splash of water when it started to stick). Chucked in some cajun spices and served it with a few slices of chicken. Was stuffed for about 200 cals Smile Though I managed to find room for a bit more veg and a little cheese for supper!

Weighed on Monday, and lost another lb and half an inch from my waist. I'm more bothered about the waist measurements to be honest, as I'm a real shortie and stick all my extra around my middle. I need to lose another two inches just to get to the half my height ratio Shock. I was feeling a bit glum about the half inch, as it seems to move so slowly from round my middle, til I checked my MFP stats. Turns out I've lost 2 inches in total since early July- so not so terribly slow if you look beyond the weekly view Smile

I agree about overweight being the norm these days. I mentioned to one of the blokes at work I was doing 5:2 and he looked and me proper gone out and said 'what do you want to diet for?!'. Er, 'cause I'm a little barrel?

FD tomorrow- just in time for a weekend spent making jam Grin

Lottieuk · 22/07/2015 20:40

Hi I'm new to the group, I started 5.2 in May originally to lose weight for my holiday but after reading the book I was interested also in the health benefits. I got off to a great start and lost almost a stone so far but in the last month I've struggled to meet my Tdee of 1550 but coming in mostly at 1700.

I'm off on holiday very soon and I think this may be part of the reason I've been a slacking somewhat, holiday is all inclusive but I'm planning on ensuring I get lots of veg (I was a terrible veg eater prior to 5.2) and will be continuing when I get back.

Love this board it's great to find a place where everyone shares daily :)

confusedandemployed · 22/07/2015 21:07

In that case Aleesha I second the suggestion to check out the recipe thread. I tend to save at least 80% of my FD calories for one evening meal, then have an early night!! Like many people doing 5:2 I find that the act of eating just wakens my hunger, whereas if I don't eat I cope much better. Also, weirdly, I obsess far less about food during the day because I'm not constantly wondering what I can have to eat.

JimmyCorkhill · 22/07/2015 22:22

confused I use one of these to grate courgettes for courgetty spaghetti.

Aleesha I make my FDs my busiest days which can be tricky as I'm a SAHM and don't have a busy lifestyle. I agree with confused that eating makes me hungry so I stick to one meal a day on FDs.

My new gym has opened and I am really enjoying exercising. My first tabata class tomorrow. No idea what it is but I know it's been recommended on here Grin

mrsmugoo · 22/07/2015 22:31

FD here today which I didn't actually count the calories but I'm pretty sure it would not have been more than 650. As I get closer to GW I'm less strict on sticking to 500 now.

So glad I stuck it out today - I wavered a few times but I've got 2 under my belt now so done til Monday.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/07/2015 23:06

Welcome, Lottie and well done on your SV. That amount will make a difference to how your feel and look.
Smile
Well done on your SV and inches NSV, Borderwrangler
That's a good rate of loss for both: what took years to gain won't disappear in a fortnight, but losses add up over the weeks and you realise how far you have come.

Jimmy Tabata is brilliant for improving fitness and often helps insulin metabolism too.
It is a very concentrated form of HIIT, one of the Fat Blasts I advocate in the 5:2 ExerciseThread3 OP
Classic Tabata = 8 intervals, each consisting of 20 secs max intensity exercise followed by 10 secs rest / recovery. Each Tabata takes 4 mins, so your class may include a few with other exercises, or may have modified the imterval length.

Aleesha On these threads, we aim for lean, healthy and fit. Some folk are naturally very slim, so I encourage them to add muscle for health now and in their later years.
The main aim, imo for health and shape, is to get the natural waist below half your height - permanently, not just the day after an FD.

You say your DH doesn't want you to lose further. May I ask your BMI ?

Day out at a theme park with friends to mark the start of the summer hols today and am staying with them tonight, picnic, crisps, more crisps, dip, lots of alcohol....tried to log it all into MFp honestly and it looks like 2400!!! Shock

Going back to work next week will surely curb these days of excess...

Fast day tomorrow....

Aleesha · 22/07/2015 23:40

My bmi is 21.7 wich is healthy I do fit in size small or size 10.but I need to lose my tummy.I am only 23. after my 2 children my waist line is 30 wich is too big want to lose 4 inches of my waist. I m doing stomach exercises at home.can't go to the gym because of my 2 munchkins.

TerrorAustralis · 23/07/2015 03:40

Aleesha cutting down on carbs can help shift weight around your middle. Sometimes it's not just fat, but bloat and water retention. Fast day snacking doesn't work. Plan what you're going to eat. Most of the time I've only had dinner, but have been experimenting with having a small lunch. A boiled egg and a few low cal vegetables like celery sticks helps me get through.

I had a successful NFD yesterday, even with a dinner out and came in under sedentary TDEE. Who would have thought that's possible? Feeling good about stepping on the scales this morning and my weight being 0.1kg less than yesterday, even after a couple of glasses of wine and a small piece of chocolate cake.

Another NFD today. Planning to get some exercise in later and have another night out tonight. After yesterday I'm motivated to keep the calories well under control.

confusedandemployed · 23/07/2015 06:22

Oh thanks Jimmy that looks ideal! I hope you enjoy Tabata. It's one of my favourite exercises.
Blossom I'm envious of your lovely Wednesday! Sounds very decadent!
Well done on your SV Terror.
FD for me today, and I have an interview this morning for a job I'm not sure I want. It's full time and a fair old commute, neither of which really appeal at the present. Oh well, I need to line something up as my own job is in the balance as our funding has been slashed. Long term plan is to open a business - but I can't start on that for at least 6 months.
OK, enough rambling. Good luck all other Thursday fasters!
