Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Dr Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Aha stripey there you are. Hopefully you're back in track and mind set to rest now.

Have a fabulous holiday dragons. Sounds like tomorrow could be an easy FD so embrace that mal de mer!!

We've had a lovely day at a chilli festival. Non-counting NFD today but I haven't go e overboard. Although off out to a friends later so we'll see... I tasted the hottest chilli sauce ever today. Now I like a chilli but this was ridiculous. Trinidadian Scorpion plus something else....pure evil. Amazing. What is it about chilli's that brings out the masochist in people?!

Hope your FD going well BigChoc.

LetMeDriveTheBus · 18/07/2015 19:04

Have a great holiday dragon.

I'm a pound down this week so that's 30 and 1/2 off in total Grin. Feel like a new woman!

Got a bit of a feast day planned tomorrow with family visiting in the day and out with friends in the evening. But this journey has showed me that occasional deviations from my usual WOE have no impact on my weekly progress as long as I just get back on track for the next meal. I'd always use occasions as an excuse for continuing to over-eat before. Sometimes for days, weeks or months Blush.

Hellokitty105 · 18/07/2015 19:22

Errol and B&W it's a small world!!

All inclusive is too temping! I've eaten so much chocolate ice cream Blush I love my holidays but I can't wait to get back into my normal routine I feel so bloated! I don't drink at home and I've had cocktails everynight on top of all the ice cream and desserts!!

BorderWrangler · 18/07/2015 20:37

confused a chilli festival sounds amazing! As does the chilli sauce- was Bhut Jolokia/ghost chilli the other one in there by any chance? I bloody love chillis, usually grow a few varieties each year but have done sod all planting this year.

Was up on the moors today and the bilberries are out! But I forgot to take a container or bag with me... D'oh. The bracken was so high in places the cows managed to hide in it Hmm I don't mind cows much, so long as I can take a nice, wide route around them when I have the dog with me. Ninja cows, popping up next to you with a 'get 'orf my land' snort, are just uncalled for to be honest.

Still a nice long walk, and in my TDEE today. Think I might do a FD tomorrow Smile

mrsmugoo · 18/07/2015 20:42

Woops over TDEE today by some way, but at least I had the sense to eat my snacks instead of dinner so I saved a few hundred calories!

Think I'll do a 1000 cal mini fast tomorrow to even things out.

The honey roast nuts, cans of pimms and chilli chocolate cookies were so good though!

DeckSwabber · 18/07/2015 20:44

Semi-planned FD today.

Out and about and stupidly got caught with no water on a long sunny walk so had some orange juice - very high sugar for not much rehydration. However, this is now a week of AFD.

Weight loss from my waist is noticeable. I'm putting in a request for it to come off my tummy.

magicalrealistmum · 18/07/2015 21:22

Thanks for the mfp tip bigchoc . I have set to maintenance as suggested
Tomorrow is shopping and planning for FD on Monday. I am 5ft 4 and 10st 10 , goal is 9st.
I'll pop on here once a day or so as I often forget where my phone is....Much to the amusement/ frustration of family
Hope everyone's FD went well
X

BigChocFrenzy · 18/07/2015 22:53

Congrats on your SV, bus Over 30 lb lost, well you are a smaller, new woman.
Also an important lifestyle NSV that you can enjoy one feast day, then return to normal plan

Well done on your waist NSV, deckswabber
5:2 often targets the mid-section, so keep going and you should lose more stomach fat too.

My tongue is burning in sympathy with your chilli festival experience, confused
And the other end too - hot chilli gives me a sore behind, TMI !
My FD turned into a mini-FD because my 2hr Saturday circuits & spin were absolutely exhausting in the heat (my eco-friendly gym doesn't have a/c)

Your walks on the moors sound blissful, wrangler a dog, Ninja cows Grin and bilberries are all a woman hiker could want - until some clever biologist develops an ice cream bush.

Until then, I'm enjoying my new Cuisinard ice cream machine. I can turn choc shakes and yoghurt into ice cream, sometimes with a dollop of nut butter - you might like that variant, Kitty
Delicious low-cal healthy ice cream within 60 mins, no faffing around with freezers.
My other new gadget is a Nutribullet, which I use to make cold veg soup, much nicer than it sounds.

McKayz · 19/07/2015 07:25

Hello!

Can I join in please? I have about 6 stone to lose and I've done 5:2 fairly recently and found it worked really well. I fell off the wagon about a month ago so need to get back on.

We've booked a holiday to Florida in August 2016 so my goal is to have lost the weight by then.

I have a lovely group of friends on Facebook that I check in with and would like to talk to more people doing it. I'm hoping it will help me stick to it if I have people to talk to.

I'm currently 246lb which is depressing.

TerrorAustralis · 19/07/2015 08:20

Hi McKayz!

Well done everyone, lots of SVs and NSVs around. It's really inspiring.

My weekend has gone slightly off the rails. Friday night had wine & cheese, pretty sure I ended up over TDEE but didn't enter in MFP. Yesterday we ended up spending the afternoon with friends in what turned out to be a wine & snack-filled afternoon. NFD again today has been OK, boiled eggs and toast for breakfast and a chicken & vermicelli noodle salad for lunch. I'm cooking a roast lamb for dinner, so will go easy on the spuds and make sure there are lots of veg.

Tomorrow is an FD, and I may try to do two in a row. I've bought some extra veg to try B&W's vegetable chili recipe and some soup.

I bought some electronic scales today. I usually measure first thing in the morning, but I did jump on them to test. I think my morning weight is going to be at least 2kg over what my other scales were telling me . I know it's just a number, but it feels like a setback, with more weight to lose. Sad

hazeyjane · 19/07/2015 08:50

Hello, can I join in?

I have to lose about 4 stone, which has appeared over the last 5 years since having ds (and ain't going anywhere!)Not helped by my love of cooking and baking cakes.

I am going to have FD tomorrow, so could do with a tasty tea recipe so I am not instantly feeling like I am punishing myself!!

Also I am a coffee addict (starting to feel like I am at an AA meeting!) and like an espresso topped up with hot soya milk and sugar - I am going to need a low calorie version of this, or I may not function!!

confusedandemployed · 19/07/2015 09:29

Morning everyone, nice to hear everyone's having a good weekend.
Welcome hazeyjane and McKayz, this is a very supportive thread. Good luck starting your new way of eating. We are pretty evangelical about 5:2 here!

BigChocFrenzy will be along shortly to give you some tips. She knows all there is to know about this malarkey.

Border no it wasn't Bhut Jolokia, although I've had a few dealings with that particular variety as well. I can't for the life of me remember which one it was. The Trinidadian Scorpion that was in it is apparently the new hottest chilli in the world. Or at least it was when they printed the label...they grow hotter and hotter varieties all the time. I'll search it out online and post the link later. Good luck with your FD today! I'm not strong enough for a weekend FD Blush. Make sure you get out and about to avoid getting the boredom munchies and take a bag to fill with bilberries

However, I am out for a nice long dog walk in a mo, followed by a quick session in the gym. This Fitbit is really motivating me!

Happy Sunday everyone!

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2015 09:29

Welcome, Mckayz, HazeyJane

With a few stone to go, you should each find your weight loss is much faster than average, especially for the first month.

Many folk have lost a lot of weight on these threads. Just settle down for the long haul, be patient and the loss really mounts up over the weeks:

Currently, igivein has lost over 50lb and is continuing to lose - she gives updates every couple of weeks. Bus has just posted 30lb+.
You might want to check the "Useful MN Threads" in the OP - the Inspirations thread has reports from successful 5:2ers, some of whom have lost a lot.
I look forward to your posts of losses too.

Jane There are links to FD recipes under Useful Resources & Calculators in the "How to Start" section of the OP. The BBC Good Food 5:2 link is especially good and their butternut squash stew is very popular here.
Also check out the 5:2 Recipes thread

For your coffee, Unsweetened almond milk is v low cal - under 10 cals for 50 ml.
Many here use Splenda of sweetener tabs - there have been many scientific studies and none have shown concrete harm. There are a few people who find sweeteners start sweet cravings just like sugar though.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2015 09:32

Terror Don't worry.
After a very carby weekend, you will have retained a lot of water, but an FD should release a lot of that water.
Also, you'll have a lot of undigested weekend food in your system, so a few dumps and pees will also make a difference.

Just keep to your new scales and always weigh under the same conditions.

fusspot66 · 19/07/2015 14:34

Hi there,
I just spent the weekend with family and it seems my step mum was inspired by my talk of the 5:2 in June when I visited and has been fasting tue and thur. She's bored by salady stuff for lunch and tea in such close days. I've told her about courgette with lime zest and black pepper and courgette with Chinese 5spice. Can anyone suggest a few simple tweaks to salad/ green veg she could make for interest? Also, can anyone tell me what exactly are these zero noodles I hear of and what similar thing she might find in Spain? TIA

TalkinPeace · 19/07/2015 15:20

I have had my healthiest Sunday lunch ever ....
going out later so no booze.
Had (between three of us) a tin of tuna, a tin of mixed bean salad, 20 black pitted olives and a couple of chopped Lidl pimentos
all stirred together with a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic
utterly scrummy, very nutrient dense but not too many calories.

Back to the weeding now ....

Welcome to the new people by the way.
5:2 is for ever, not just to target weight.
I stopped losing weight over 2 years ago and still fast regularly because its good for me.

Its good for you too.

Iamblossom · 19/07/2015 17:07

Hi all.

Boozy Friday and carby Saturday led to a clean day today within tdee and no alcohol or junk.

Tomorrow is fast day. Looking forward to it.

Welcome to all newbies.

Hellokitty105 · 19/07/2015 19:08

Thanks Big choc I'll look into that when I'm home. I'll have to do a few strict no sugar days as I've drfo let that slide with the ice cream and cocktails etc. I wouldn't mind eating so much if I was doing some exercise to compensate! Hopefully any gain will drop off if I do a week ADF when I'm back, maybe I might suprise myself and actually have maintained, that would be nice but unrealistic I feel too bloated too not have gained

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2015 20:24

kitty Yesterday, I started a Healthy Summer Month:
No added sugar, no junk, alcohol, fries, crisps etc.
I'll be boosting raw veg intake via Nutribullet
and swapping simple carbs for complex (except fruit and yog).
Also planning more sleep time.

I did similar last year and felt great.
Now I can make my protein shake into yummy ice cream, it's even easier.

OP posts:
Monikita · 19/07/2015 20:27

Had another overeat day yesterday (houmous and warm pitta is my weakness) but just stuck to a small brekkie and Sunday lunch today.
WI today and I've only lost 100g since last week (and I cut my bra strap length hair to my chin yesterday so I probably put weight on in reality! ). However I'm glad I followed the advice of measuring my waist and hips - I lost 3cm on my waist and 1cm off my hips (not sure why it's a lot less, maybe it's my breastfeeding body holding on to the fat).

It's lovely to hear everyone's successes - it really spurs me on when I just want to eat even more pitta and houmous!

BorderWrangler · 19/07/2015 20:49

Congrats on the tape measure victories Monikita

Confused I should have taken your advice and (literally) head for the hills! A friend came over, and we shared a couple of tins of Stella in the sun (because that's just the classy type of lasses we are) which has pushed my fast day into more of a 'not eaten much but still taken in loads of calories' day.

Sigh. NFD planned tomorrow, then a much easier FD on Tuesday. Who would have thought being in work all day would ever be a good thing!

Monikita · 19/07/2015 21:28

Thanks Border. Am envious of being surrounded by bilberries - we have some blueberry bushes in our garden for our toddler to have fun picking. A few ripened today and I tried one - it was so sour I thought it dissolved the lining of my mouth!

Found something that has really helped me on FDs recently - vanilla chai rooibos with a splash of almond milk (unsweetened). I feel like I'm having a whole milk sweet version! Yummy.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2015 21:31

fusspot Zero-cal "noodles" are made from ground Konjak flour.
Some 5:2ers find them very useful; others (like me) find they taste, smell and feel like fish vomit. See what you think: Holland & Barrett

Well done on your inches NSV, Monikita The waist is the best place to lose fat.
I adore pita and hummus too - an excellent Greek restaurant nearby makes their own delic hummus and bake the pita with a drizzle of olive oil and garlic.
To keep the NFDs within bounds, have you managed to cut out snacks ?

OP posts:
Louper · 19/07/2015 21:43

Well I've had an epic fail of a first week fasting! That's a bit OTT actually - did one 1000cal day, tried 2nd fast on thurs but DD is maybe growth spurt-ing - 9 weeks old - and fed all night the night before. It's not the BFing that makes me fall off the wagon so much as the sleep deprivation - when I've had no sleep I just need carbs. I know this from years of night shifts! And I also know from MFP that carbs and FDs don't work at all... Too calorie dense and lead to blood sugar wobbles.

Then my sister's wedding party this weekend...

Ah well. Maybe BigChoc was right telling me it might be a bit early yet post sprogging. But tomorrow is the start of another week. I'll try again. I've not been snacking - which is a start, and I've been reading this thread - you are all an inspiration, it keeps the motivation up which is ace. Great to hear all the week's successes.

Cupoftea4me · 19/07/2015 22:00

Some great successes here! I ended up with a loss if 1.5lbs last week on my WI on Friday, and now weigh lighter than I have since last December!

Well, I did on Friday...after a birthday weekend of eating, boozing and camping I have rather a lot of damage to undo.

It does, however, mean I'm looking forward to my FD tomorrow. Also have an hour of personal training thrown in.

FDs planned for Monday and Wednesday and perhaps a mini one thrown in on another day.

Good luck this week all!
